I'm anemic. This makes it very difficult to adhere to a vegetarian diet, since I'm deficient in iron and most iron-rich foods are meat.
Is anyone else anemic and if so, what do you eat to keep your iron up?

Will you find me a blue rose? My iron was low for a while. Look up and eat non-meat (duh.) foods that are rich in iron (and other nutrients too.). Eat beans and veggies. If it's really low and you always feel tired talk to your doctor. They can recommend iron supplements. (That's what I did.)

Actually most iron rich foods aren't meat, dark leafy greens are always a good bet, most cereals too, just watch out because some have sugar that has been refined by bone char

The only problem with supplements is that they are often made with animal extracts, so be sure to ask your doctor or read the label, I have a forum topic here with a list of all sorts of animal by-products, it's alphabetical, so it's easy to locate the specific items

I have a blood disorder where I just don't have enough hemoglobin, so I am pretty well constantly anemic.
What you can do is eat beans, leafy greens, and cereals with high iron contents, but always try to pair those things with a source of vitamin C.
So have a fruit of some sort with your cereal, etc. The vitamin C increases how much iron you can absorb from your meal. Since I can't take synthetic iron supplements, this has been paramount in keeping my iron levels up. I find that multivitamins are okay for me though.
Also, dairy actually blocks the absorption, so being vegan has actually helped me out with this problem.

I used to be iron anemic back when I ate meat. Now that I am vegetarian, I am on the high end of the normal range for iron levels. xp

Eat as much spinach as you possibly can and eat as much food from a cast-iron frying pan as you can manage. That's how I'm beating it.

Being a vegetarian has improved my iron..I give blood regularly and everything. I get a lot of my iron from grains, especially cereals smile
