Gilder trotted along beside the exuberant female, taking in his surroundings carefully in case he needed to find his way back alone. It had been a long time since he had last left the coalition's lands, but as yet the forest was much the same. The scents were what made this place different, and they would be more helpful in navigation than sights, save for really distinctive landmarks.
"I have no doubt it was one of those flowers," Gilder went on with a nod. "Where I come from, each kit must become attuned to the earth before they are considered a full adult. I worked that special pollen into my coat as soon as I was allowed to do so."
No mushrooms for him yet though. He couldn't understand why. Certainly he was young, but palui had gained them at his age before. Why would they not bless him? He was worthy, he knew he was worthy... Perhaps it was a sign, a sign that he was not meant to lead by brute force. No. He was made for cunning, wit, plans. He did not need growths on his tail to take charge of the coalition, or to keep control once he had it. That brute of an upstart would rue the day he had taken what was no his, and that pink wench who hung around him would go down too. Yes. He would enjoy making her pay for her falseness.

Khepri keeps her ears perked forwards, tail wagging wildly behind her in her thrill of the adventure ahead. Talk of Gilder's home though catches her interest. "Really? What if someone fell into water and got attuned to that first would they get in trouble?"
Truthfully she didn't know just what attuned a palui to water, especially since she hadn't been, but she'd seen some water palui from a distance and they were always in the water, so it was maybe a good guess. But attuning before being seen as grown up? That was a funny thing, they could grow up before becoming attuned.
"So everybody where you're from is an earth? Oh! Then maybe we should ask if anybody's seen any earth palui around before, when we see them? That could help maybe. My bundle was left so close to those flowers, my parents had to be attuned too if they weren't already. Yay, a clue!" She grins widely, flicking her tail again in a more excitable manner now.

Gilder shrugged. "It's never come up to my knowledge, nobody has become the wrong kind in living memory certainly. I suppose if they did it would be... an issue. They might have to leave our lands, or maybe be of lesser status. It would be a matter for the leader to decide." Which, one day, would be him so it was probably worth thinking about such matters.
"Asking after earth palui might be a good idea," he went on. "It's quite possible that your mother was one, I can't imagine my father going with one of another kind... but then until today I couldn't imagine him having a second mate or a fling or whatever at all." Maybe this was all a mistake, maybe he and Khepri were distantly related but still looked similar by coincidence. Maybe. It wasn't the simplest explanation though, and the simplest explanation was often the one which was correct. It was worth continuing with this quest, it wasn't as though he had anything better to do in any case.

Khepri nods, still grinning like a kit as she bounds forward just a few steps. "I think I remember where some earth palui were staying! It was a few days ago and they could have left, but they might still be here. They might know."
They had a clue now! A small one, but it was a clue. Now this was really exciting, a chance to learn who her mother was? How could she pass this up? Though once she pauses for him to catch up to her, she takes a moment to think again. "They'd leave if they didn't attune to earth? What if it was an accident and they didn't mean to? Would they still have to if they couldn't help it?" Well, she was curious now that this had been brought up. She'd never heard of a palui getting shunned because of how they were attuned. But, then again, she didn't hear of much with Anuk being the 'protective big brother' about everything, then going to raise his kits.

Gilder shrugged, keeping his pace at a sedate trot. "I don't know. As I say, it hasn't happened in my lifetime. I suppose it would be viewed as fate; if they were supposed to remain with us, they would have become one of us. If they really wanted to stay... Well, I don't know, like I say that would be up to the leader." What would he do if it were him? He might have to deal with a situation like that some day, best to at least ponder it. Having a different kind of palui in their coalition had clear advantages, but then again it could cause great upset. Integrating them successfully would take a good deal of work, that much was for sure.
"I hope they're still there," the white palui went on, "if they're not we're back to where we started really." They would find other clues, hopefully. It would be extremely annoying never to find out the truth now he'd got himself interested, now he'd convinced himself there might well be allies for his cause at the end of this trip.

Khepri nods, as enthusiastic as ever about it. Though now, she turns curious again.. an easy task for her mind. "What is fate? Is it what makes us attune, or grow up where we do? Oh, is it fate that made you come out here looking for something?" She grins, flicking her tail eagerly.
"I've never seen fate.. I wonder what it looks like, or if it's ever been caught before. Maybe it's attached to the thing so long ago that was making everything feel bad and making those noises at night." Did Anuk ever say what that thing was? He'd gone off with his mate to find out, but then came back. Oh well, it stopped making the noise at night so something had to have happened right? Right. "Have you seen fate before?"
