[I mightt be the only one here who feels this way, but I dislike rap. I'm not going to sit here and "say" that it's not music...because if metal and country are music, well then...rap is music too. xd But seems like it just reminds me of the stereotypes I hate. I hate it when people act "ghetto," or talk "ghetto." I hate it that some rap songs are like a 4 minute long commercial for material bullshit most people can't afford yet kill themselves to obtain. I don't like looking at "video vixens" more than I look at the rapper. The "artist" could be in the video in maybe a half dozen blips, but you see these half-naked females, cars, and products for the majority of the video. Aside from music videos, I just hate that they think they are "representing our culture." That's not my culture. confused Discuss.]

You have rights to your own opinion, but if you only listen to whats on the radio most times thats really all you're going to get.

[I actually listened to some rap last night. Some of it was on promotional CDs that weren't released to the public. Still, most of what I heard was just people talking s**t with nothing really to say. mad Don't get me wrong...in the past I did like some rap; but only if they have something to say--to inform or entertain, rather than to boast and brag. confused ]

[I guess I'm the opposite of what I was "supposed" to be, based on the environment where I was raised. I decided to become "anti-ghetto" because I hated how I was expected to look and act. confused
I don't see the big fuss about Common...but Talib Kweli seemed to have stuff to say. I liked The Fuguees, and Lauren Hill solo also. I don't know why people say the Black Eyed Peas "sold out" just because they broadened their horizon. stare ]

[...I think the song is "my humps" but I'm not sure. Anyway, would you rather they keep up their old image to please you and the "Sold-Out Crew?" (Meaning the people who think they sold out.) Afterall, you are the one saying they sold out...so how loyal a fan are you, anyway? wink With fans like that, who needs haters??
So they did what they had to do to make the most money and gain the best popularity...And? What's the problem with that? talk2hand ]

Himesh I?m a person who likes a variety of music (yes even country) and rap so far is at the bottom of my list because there are few songs from that genre that I like and agree with. I don?t want to hear depressing music or music about hate. We get enough of that from TV and just everyday life. I also don?t want to hear music that degrades females; just being an African woman is enough of a challenge. So by listening/supporting music that puts females down I would just be asking for people to look down on me and view me as someone that?s just a slut or whore seeking nothing in life but material goods. [Very well put. 3nodding ]

[To elaborate--I like what you had to say, Himesh, because I have similar tastes. I listen to music that speaks to me. If there is a country or metal song out there that is saying something that makes me think or helps me vent or just puts me in a good mood or the right frame of mind for what I'm doing at the moment, then I'll listen to it. Rap just hasn't been able to do that for me for the most part. Kanye West's song and video for Jesus Walks was probably the last rap I thought was inspirational. 3nodding I think I cried once...the video hit so close to home. whee ]
