How many people enjoy this game genre? I personally love them, currently playing HomeWorld, and in the process of 'acquiring' Empire Earth, and I also have Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 and it's expansion, Yuri's Revenge. Also have Age of Empires 2 and it's expansion, and the Star Wars RTS but are not installed, and ALSO Starcraft.

Since this is a Steamunk guild don't forget Warcraft, which has steam tanks, and Rise of Legends, which has a steampunk nations, the Vinci.

C&C Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge are the best RTS out there, in my opnion. They're just deep enough, and not over complicated. I don't personally like StarCraft much, or the WarCraft series for that matter. I've been meaning to "acquire" a copy of Rise of Legends, but I've "acquired" so many PC games in the past few months that I'm behind on trying them out.
If anybody has C&C RA2 and/or Yuri's Revenge and wants to try playing some games through a private server or some such (I don't recall if C&C RA2 supports TCP/IP for direct internet play). I'm itchin' for some skirmish.

As long as the map we choose is HUEG and has many buildings, I'm cool with it. I love urban warfare.

Nothing better than amassing 3 extra bases and filling random buildings across the map with troops! I'm totally up for some RA2 or YR, but I've never used Hamachi before. I'll have to check it out.

I've only ever played 1 on 1 skirmishes, though -- with real people, I mean, not counting CPU players or campaign. I only know one person offline who is enthusiastic enough about RTS to actually beat me now and then, but he prefers StarCraft (and he ran off with some of my games and I haven't seen him in 4 months, so he probably doesn't count anymore *shakes fist indignantly*).

Well I hate to be the sour fruit in the basket, but I don't much like RTS myself. I've been able to tolerate the ones by Blizzard, and can even enjoy them sometimes, but in general the genre has always frustrated me. Something about having to face ridiculous odds on a time limit and the fact that if you do something stupid (which usually involves moving units to an innocuous location that you had no way of knowing was teeming with enemy forces) you get squashed like the bug the game designers evidently wanted to remind you that you were...or they go the other way and are pathetic, with a choice between a bad, good, or "you win" unit.

I've never once beaten the single-player campaign of an RTS game, but I've spent hundreds of hours playing them. Most RTS games are designed with multiplayer as the focus, and with campaign as just a way to challenge yourself, hence the insurmountable odds. Plus, the epic stories are supposed to be interesting and draw you into the game, but I never got into the stories, what with the regularly scheduled a** kickings I'd receive.
