Oh! The race was starting soon! In the end, Elae summoned up all of her knowledge about runnerbeasts and picked the prettiest one. Or, rather, what she thought was the prettiest one. In this case, it happened to be a light gray beast with a nice flowing mane and tail. Very pretty to look at but appearances probably weren’t the best way to judge a race.
Ah well. If she had to look at something for the next few minutes, it might as well be something pretty!

Jessan finally selected his runner. A scraggly looking piebald that had spirited look in his eyes. Something about this creature drew the former herder in and easily made up his mind. Paying the man his marks, Jessan moved to the sidelines and watched the beasts line up.
Excited, he looked around to see who was betting this round. There were a few people whose faces were familiar but no one he really knew. And, suddenly it happened. The runners were off! He could only hope that his money was well placed.

Veyes looked at each runner beast and finally settled on a deep chestnut one that had a confident look in its big brown eyes. The legs looked strong on the beast and the withers looked solid. Of course, one could never tell if the creature had a hidden flaws. He wished his brother was there to give him a better estimate of the animal but in the end he had only his own experience to guide him and a hope wish that this might turn out well.
As the runners hit the tracks, he took a deep breath and forgot all his other troubles, "Well hear goes nothing! Go! Go! Go!" With that he cheered on the beast whole heartedly without reservation. No matter the outcome he'd have a good time either way!

V'len kept cool as he watched the runnerbeasts fly down the track, his blue eyes watching a certain dapple gray female he had noticed while coming in. She was a beautiful girl, for certain, surely a runnerbeast he would have loved to have had in his ranch, in the times before he had become a dragonrider, of course (so long ago now... five turns? Six turns? He couldn't remember). Those times, however, were long past. He wasn't even sure if he could identify a good runnerbeast anymore. Well, he supposed he would see with this race.

Kyllae knew little about runner beasts. So why waste time trying to decide which to pick? It's not like she was losing much. Kyllae laughed and picked a random number, and then selected the runner beast on the lineup that matched her number. A rather plain brown beast. Okay. Whatever, who was she to say what made a champion.
She cheered loudly for the beasts as they ran, stifling her laughter. Why, there was so much excitement in the air here! So much energy! Why hadn't she come here before?

L'thor grinned and lent forward as the race began and his chestnut sprung away. Had he made a good choice? Only time would tell he supposed! As the runners raced past him, the greenrider let out a loud whoop of excitement, and watched as they galloped on to the finish.

Gh'lan wasn't an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but he hoped that the sleek bay runner he had chosen would pick up his feet and bring home the bacon... figuratively speaking of course!

And so the beasts pounded through the dirt, nostrils flaring red and foam flying from their muzzles. It was a close race, a grey and chestnut fighting head for head for the lead, either refusing to give an inch. The chestnut was just a bit older, however, just a bit more responsive to his rider--he'd surge forward with his last reserves to zip just under the nose of the grey and steal the win away. "'N one of yeh had the sense to pick that un? Tch!" He was shaking his head, but the old man didn't really seem bothered. He'd turn to the greenrider with a scowl that he had to fight to keep, quite pleased despite himself. "Boy!" He'd bark, clearly not caring if the other had a dragon or not--this was his racetrack! Or it might as well have been. "Yer egg. Keep the bugger warm, don't let it get cold." He'd crook a gnarled finger towards the other, wheeze into his fist once more, and hobble over to a heated pot of sand. Though his hands shook a little, he firmly grasped the thing and would hold it out to L'thor. "Now take it and get out of here, all of yeh! ...Eh, and some marks for the lady who came in second." His hand dug into a grubby pocket and those were thrust out to Elae before he'd stiffly move back to the fence, clearly about to take care of the tired beasts.

L'thor smiled slightly at the cranky old coot. He did seem to care about the runners, and that was something to respect. "I will, thank you." Four, L'thor? Really L'thor? People were going to start to think he was crazy. He was definitely running out of perches for the little things. He was glad that only Dusk came to plop down on his shoulder; if the others had broken off their exploring and come to him as well he might have got a few glares.
"Well," he went on, turning to Veyes, "looks like I've another to add to the faire. I think I'm going to see if I can find a basket; Dusk can ride in to too and keep the egg warm. Want to come hunting with me, or did you have other things to do?"

Veyes shook his head as his runner lost but at least he only lost by a length rather than the one that hardly made it out of the starting block. He couldn't be too disappointed with that although he did take a small hit to his little purse of marks. "Oh Well, it was fun. Better luck next time!" At least, he wasn't a poor loser...as he turned to see who the winner was.
There he saw L'thor getting handed a little egg, "Shards! You won!" He said gleefully as looked down at the small egg in L'thor's hand. "That's great!" He stared at the flit egg for a moment because he'd never seen one before in his life. "It's so small." he said softly as if he could possibly wake the little flit inside. "Are the eggs always about that size?" he asked curiously.
Sure, I'll go with you! I just was going to get a bubbly pie and maybe see the merchants. It's my first Gather you know so I thought I might take in as much as I could. This has been a lot more fun than I've had in several sevendays!" He smiled cheerfully and patted L'thor lightly on the back to congratulate him but not to much to dislodge the egg. He would have like to have touched it but it was so small so he didn't ask. One day he hoped he'd get lucky and find a flit nest or maybe he'd impress a dragon. As many folks that had flits he was sure his chances were better there. Dragons...well they were a bit more complex.
