Vereist poked his head out of their cave. Only at these hours did he ever get a chance to explore without Mama or Rollo with him. Every few days or so he would repeat this process. His mind was set on his mission, and nothing, not even his family would keep him from it. He had to find out why-- there were so many unanswered questions he had.

Mama would only keep a small territory for the three of them. Vereist didn't think that there were any hostile dragons out there, but she always kept the same borders, and the long-maned gray dragon never pressed further.

Slowly creeping out of the cave entrance, Vereist looked back at his sleeping family one last time, and slowly started off.

Bryce woke as the sun started to dapple through the entrance to his den. As much as he wanted to lie there and rest, he knew that he needed to get up. He slowly rose to his feet; shaking some loose leaves from his nest out of his grey fur.

This morning, like most mornings would be the same. He always woke up early, before most would, to go hunt. His stomach growled, but this food would not be for him.

He started out of the cave entrance and up a rocky slope, carefully watching the sky.

The crooked tree was were it always was, with its knobby stem jutting out in all directions. There were deep claw marks in the twisted trunk. Veriest always had thought that Mama had put them there, but now he realized that they were to spread out to be hers. Allein had slender paws. These marks were definately made by a large male.

Vereist put his own forepaw up to the marks. His seemed only slightly smaller than the one who made these. He felt a chill run up his spine. The marks meant that this territory, the one occupied by Mama, Rollo, and him, ended and another's began-- most likely the males.

Swallowing the growing pit in his stomach, Vereist passed the tree. He didn't look back.

When the shadow passed over his head, Bryce lunged upwards, ignoring the wind of the bird's thrashing wings and diving towards its neck. With a quick snap, the wings became still and the flightless bird hung limp in the gray dragon's jaws.

He felt no remorse. That was what he had been doing every morning for the last long while. Every since he had found out. Always for them first... never himself.

Bounding forwards, the smaller dusky dragon found that this was much easier than he had thought. He missed his mother and brother, but assured himself that he would see them soon. They were probably still asleep, anyways.

He barely noticed the trail below him until his foot sank into a deeper hole. Looking down, he noticed the odd shape of the hole. It looked like a footprint.

Vereist raised his own paw out of the awkward shape it had been in as he had stepped, and placed it neatly aligned with the one below him. A near perfect match.., he though, other than size. The toes fit in the same shape, as well as the grooves of the pads on his own feet fit into the deep crevices left by this other dragon.

Vereist was on the right trail.
