I can't believe I forgot about this thread! Hopefully, we'll have a forum to discuss literature in, but since there aren't enough people to start one... all of you who are interested in a literature forum have to convince us moderators to pay for another forum. So just talk about literature and whatnot in here... you can talk about movies, too, but it'd be nice if it was somewhat relevant to the topic of literature, i.e. movie adaptions of Harry Potter/Chronicles of Narnia/Lord of the Rings, etc

You just wanna discuss literature? Like books in general? Wow... such a broad topic.

I like books. Right now I'm reading "The Innkeeper's Song" by Peter S Beagle. He's the same guy who wrote the Last Unicorn, and this book won a Locust award. So I was expectng really good things of it. So far it's not... bad... but it isn't great either.

Before that I read Elizabeth Kearner's Song in the Silence. It was all dragon-y and whatnot. I don't usually read dragon literature, because I usually don't like it. This was no exception. There were some good things in it, but overall I thought parts were seriously lacking and that she wasn't that great a writer -- then again, it was her first published book.

I don't know what I'm going to read next. I may re-read the next book we're doing in English class. I've already read it, but that was in like August and it would be good if it were fresh in my mind. It's called "Bel Canto" by Ann Patchett.

lol, yeah... so you can take the discussion anywhere within the realms of literature 3nodding It gets more people involved, ya?
I remember watching a cartoon version of the Last Unicorn when I was younger; 'twas my and my dad's favorite movie because of the pretty graphics and music...
I should probably read it...
Hm. My mom restricted me from reading outside of school until the ACTs are over...

gonk
I'm gonna die.
But I think that I'll just pick up a bunch of classics and tell my mom that I need to study them in preparation for the AP English exam... 3nodding Which is true, but y'know... I just like reading heart

I'd be perfectly willing to make a Literature Subforum if you guys can get enough support and raise the money for it on your own.

Have either of you read the Lemony Snicket books? They're pretty good.

Probably the most endearing aspect about them is that they seem like they're kids' books, but they're so... dark and there's so much symbolism that they kinda just grow up with everyone 3nodding I love how there's aspects in the books specifically for kids that also work for adults, and vice versa.
I need to actually read them, though, instead of trying to speed read them at Costco when my mom shops... xd

I read the first 2. I couldn't get any further. It was just depressing to the point of funny, and I didn't like that.

I like Proust. I like Pyncheon. I like any book that has no purpose whatsoever. L'researche de Temps Perdu (or whatever) is the most pointless thing ever. But I love it to death. Hopefully, I'll finish Swann's Way later next year. It takes me a while to read things like that. It's just so much in so little.

5000??
Five thousand is small, really REALLY small.

I mean, when you get into words like Vivacious, and the foreign words used in English like c'est la vie and Schadenfreude, you get into the hundred thousands, I think.

The average Intelligent human being (I just read this on something... got it off Google) I just found, knows about 200,000 to a quarter of a million words.

And sadly enough, the language has degraded with time.

Quite sad indeed.

no, I didn't mean it like THAT.

it's just that people underestimate how much they REALLY know.
it's nice knowing you know more than you think you do.

that sounds weird..... hmm.
