my old english teacher told me that pants refers to multiple "pairs" of pants not a single "pair" we simply call them pair of pants because it has two legs but it's actually ONE item. therefore making it plural is wrong.
can't remember where she looked it up at.
it's basically a slang term that became the norm and the real word became the slang term.
