Fish don't ship in the mail very well. You would be best off to look in the classified as many people will post fish for sale or free. Kijiji.com and craigslist.com are two good online classified services.
Fish actually ship very well in the mail. I've shipped and had many fish shipped to me. I've only ever had one casualty with having a fish sent to me and the seller sent me another one. Fish are pretty hardy and if you follow a few guidelines everything should be fine. On aquariacentral.com people buy/sell/give each other fish through the mail everyday.
Also: How do you think Fish stores and pet stores get their fish? They are all shipped to the stores. If fish didn't ship well, it would be extremely difficult for anyone to get their fish.
Wait, are you referring to the normal package postal service?
eek Don't those boxes get tossed around a lot? I always thought that petstores had some sort of contract with suppermarkets. I can immagine fruit and fish being shipped in the same containers.
