The Great Riff will be caused by dark energy. This is a substance that gets stronger over time and will eventually rip appart the attoms of everything thus destroying everything.

So this Great Rift is the thing that will be formed that slows and reverses the expanding of the universe until it all collapses once again into a singularity and begets another universe in a new "big bang"...
