Lily of the Valley x3 HomeLily hated this room. Everything was so… white. The fakeness of everything- white walls, white bed, white clothes- suffocated her with every breath she took. It scared her, the uniformity of a nonexistent utopia. The only thing that wasn’t completely bleached was her, and the rotten machine next to her. The stupid computer that told her how fast her heart was beating, how hard it worked to keep her in this wretched place, and how long she died in between each reluctant thump. That temporary death was what she felt the most in this unsuspected hell. They had taken all that she loved- the color, the life, the beauty- and reduced it into a disgusting ward made especially for her: her little corner of nothingness, where no one else was allowed.
Lily was dying, that much she knew; why else would she be here? Of all places she would wish to be, a hospital wasn’t even on her list. She was just wasting away here, as if she’d already been marked for dead and was just left to rot. She knew the way things worked: even as she died, another creature was brought into the world. She’d much rather be in a place where that was evident- somewhere where life ruled. The metal and technology and smoke spread like a virus all over the world, but she wanted to die away from that, to die naturally.
As Lily’s violet eyes looked out the window at the calm, blue, natural sky, her mind began to wander. She thought back ten years, to when she was just a child. Even then, she hated being in school. She would stare out of the window and daydream about a place where she could be at one with her element, the natural world. Her thoughts would soar until she was pulled back down to reality, most often by the shrill voice of her teacher. The only subject she was genuinely fond of was history. There, she would watch in front of her as the scene unfolded, dictated by her most beloved history teacher: a public festival, a fight on the battlefield, or a great feast laid out by a king. History wasn’t about the advancement of all this stupid technology; it was about the greatness of the past, and how people lived before everything began to wear away at the earth, began to kill her slowly. Now, in this supposedly great age of information, humans dominated the world and drove out the very last traces of the natural world. This was how the world would end, but she could always escape the current time through history.
The scene beheld by her mind’s eye changed as Lily found herself on a lonely, winding street in winter. She loved the snow, because of its natural whiteness and brightness, the way it shimmered, untouched, until the first footprints stomped on through. She turned at a small voice: “You’re different.” She looked to see a boy just her age. “You and I, we’re different from the rest,” he said. Lily recognized the boy from her school, but couldn’t recall his name. She looked down at her clothes: just a short-sleeved shirt, jeans, and slippers, as opposed to the many who wore coats, snow pants, and boots. “Are you talking about what I’m wearing?” she asked the boy, who shook his head and walked closer. “You and I are different from the rest in an inexplicable way,” he told her. “Okaaaay…” she said, unsure. The boy simply smiled.
Suddenly, it was springtime a few years later, and she was holding hands with the same boy she’d met before, as they sat on a blanket on a hill next to one lonely tree. She’d learned his name sometime in between: Anael. He leaned over and kissed her mouth, then pulled away and smiled. They laughed together and ate together and spent the entire day together, until the sun set over their small sanctuary.
As the happy moment dissolved before her, Lily was shaken out of her memories. She looked up to a nurse. The flustered woman hurriedly spoke, “It’s time for you to eat.” She’d probably heard of the feisty patient in room two-seventeen. Lily laughed a little in her mind, but out loud she was serious. “No. I will not eat,” she said simply. No use dragging it out, she supposed. “No, miss, you must eat. Otherwise we’re going to have to use an IV,” the nurse explained. To Lily, that just meant another needle. “Fine,” she said with a groan, grabbing the tray from the nurse with a frustrated look. She reluctantly shoved a spoon of some weird mush in her mouth as the nurse left the room. She immediately spit it out after the woman had left. Instead, she chose the apple, the only organic food on the tray. The rest she laid on the table next to her bed. Her deathbed, she thought. After eating the apple, she drifted off in to a sweet dreamless slumber. It had been the first in a while; Lily always had troubling dreams, and if not, she usually couldn’t sleep.
She awoke to a strange noise coming from the door. It sounded like the mewling of a small kitten to her, but she figured it was just her imagination. The door opened with a low creak and Lily almost expected another stupid nurse telling her to eat again. She really hated this place. But who entered was really a surprise.
She couldn’t speak except in a low whisper, so she whispered, “You came!” as loud as she could. The young man smiled. “Of course I came,” he told her, taking her hand when he reached her side. Lily couldn’t control her tears as she hugged him tightly, burying her face into his stomach because of her position. Anael laid a hand on her head, then pried her arms off of him as he knelt to her level. He kissed her on her cheek and cradled her in his arms. It had been nearly a week since Lily had been admitted to the hospital, and today was the first visiting day.
Letting go of her, Anael reached into his jacket and pulled out a little ball of orange fur. The ball unrolled into the smallest kitten she’d ever seen, and Lily picked him up carefully from Anael’s hand. She kissed the little feline on the nose, watching it blink in confusion. Lily hugged the little kitten to her chest, and kissed Anael on his cheek in thanks. Anael held Lily close to him as she once more fell asleep. Her last thought was quite a sentiment.
Lily realized just before drifting off that it didn’t matter where she was right now. Of course, it was a hospital and she hated being away from the natural world. That was to be expected. But she realized that no matter where she was, no matter how disgusting and fake and white, she was in his arms. And that was all she needed to bring herself back home.
Several days later, Anael looked at the one newspaper clipping he'd posted on his refrigerator. Lily Morgan, it read, eighteen years of age, died of unknown disease, June 17, 2009.
Anael picked up a small orange ball of fur from the ground and whispered to himself, "I miss her." This is very good. So only one or two left to read. Man this is going to be a tough decision smile

The gold thing on my arm (a monthly collectible) will be the prize. I just have to come up with a theme or something for the contest (without excluding people.)
