It was the perfect day out. The sun lazed heavily in the center of the sky, loathe to contine on its daily journey. The few clouds out were fluffy, white, playful, making no offer of rain. It was warm out, but not hot, and there was a light breeze, to tickle the skin, but not enough to muss up the hair. Days like these were the ones she treasured being able to spend at the ocean, with Argentina. And now, she was by herself. Kyllae tapped her foot on the ground, staring at the lake. It wasn't the ocean, that was for sure. And Argentina wasn't here either! But she would make do. She was Kyllae, she was the life of the party. Granted, it was a one person party at the moment, but hey, she could still have fun!
She slipped the flask of alcohol out from under her shirt, brimming with pride at her most recent acquisition. It wasn't like anyone would miss it. And besides, if she was able to take it, to get away without being noticed, she deserved it! She took a small smig, sitting down and tugging off her shoes one at a time, in favor of dipping her feet in the water. The wet was a reminder of what she had left behind. She took a large swig. No time for reminiscing or worry. That wasn't befitting her. At least, it wasn't something she should show on the outside. Dragonmen, or women, in her case, shouldn't show weakness. Dragonmen probably shouldn't steal either She laughed loudly, her face turning up in that characteristic, sly grin.
Today was a good day! True...she hadn't really finished all her assigned chores. Not that she was lazy, per say, she just...didn't want to do them right now. She would see them through. Stay up late to do them if need be. But it was such a beautiful day out! It would be criminal to waste it doing meager tasks inside. Really, why did they insist on petty chores for her? She would be so much better in a management position, she argued. Sure, she came off a little strong sometimes...she liked her alcohol, and she loved to party, but she really was good at running an operation. Too bad all those up-tight, traditional people didn't see it her way. Hell, they would pitch a fit and give her a lesson on morals if they knew of her little habit of snatching things. Really. By squashing any form of rebellion, they were only encouraging it in people like her! After all, Kyllae didn't really like rules...sure, she would listen, were it necessary; she was just...good at getting around them. And to think some people said she would be a terrible dragon rider. Kyllae didn't think so. She was just...different. Cunning. Ingenious. Inventive. Traits she felt were too often surpressed in candidates and riders alike. But hadn't that dragon noticed her in that crowd? Alerted its rider to talk to her. Out of all those people...she'd gotten to come here. Surely that meant something?...even if she was a few years behind her sisters. And lacking a firelizard. But that was trivial! This was a matter of character. Which she felt she had. Even if she was...rough around the edges.
Nursing her wine, she surveyed the area. There were a few senior weyrlings giving their dragons a scrub-down in the water. There were plenty of flits about, squeaking and playing their little games. But there were relatively few people with whom she could interact, and even fewer who she would like to invite to join her. After all, parties were better when there were more people. It was too bad. She might just have to drink all of the wine herself!

Astrisabe, unlike Kyllae, had finished her chores for the day. She had done so early, firmly believing that if you got things done with the best degree of efficiency, you had more fun to enjoy yourself. Plus, she had just been peeling tubers. It wasn't exactly a hard job, and even the women of the Lower Caverns weren't immune to this good weather. They could see the longing in Astri's eyes and had shoved her out to enjoy the sun, chiding her about how pale she was and how her staring was putting them all off work. As if she could help either factor.
Gleefully shedding her over-tunic so that she was dressed in much better attire for the weather, Astri nearly screamed in pure exhilaration as she ran towards the Weyr lake. Sometimes she wondered how sanitary it was to bathe in the same water they drank out of, but if the dragons could bathe in there, than so could she. Besides, didn't they boil the water before anyone drank it? Oh well, cooking was hardly her area of expertise, and it was one subject that Astri was content to remain ignorant on.
So intent was she on her goal, Astri missed the other girl entirely. In fact, she hadn't registered anything but the enticing water, and barely managed to pull off her boots before splashing in fully clothed and emerging with a roar of water that sent tiny wavelets lapping against the shore. The clothes weighed her down, and Astri could barely swim, so she moved closer to the shallows, whipping the water from her eyes as she did so. Even with her short hair, it was so blasted hard to see when it got wet. At least she hadn't had to shave her head though. No lice for Astri, thank you very much.
Finally spotting Kyllae, Astri found herself embarrassed by her lack of good graces. Then again... For Faranth's sake, it was hot! And Kyllae looked as though she was wholly occupied in something else. She must have been a newer Candidate- Astri didn't recognize her from the first Hatching, and there had been far too many Candidates in the second for her to know them all, much as she would have wanted to. The girl didn't have a dragon by her side, so she probably hadn't Impressed then. Welcome to the club of the lonely hearted. At least it was (probably) only her first time failing. Astri was starting to feel the sting of rejection, try as she might to convince herself that she was quite worthy of a dragon, thank you very much.
"What are you drinking?" Astri asked as she hauled herself out of the water, going to sit down next to her fellow Candidate. They looked to be around the same age, so they had that going for them as well. It would be nice to talk to someone not Turns younger than herself, to appearances could be deceiving. And was that smell alcohol? Astri thought the thrill of drinking and purloining drinks had gone away when she was sixteen, but apparently she was alone in that opinion. It wasn't as though the Candidates were forbidden to drink. It just wasn't a generally advised thing to be consuming vast amounts of alcohol. It lead to bad decisions. Astri tried not to drink too much, not liking losing control of her own mind.
"I'm Astrisabe, by the way. Candidate extraordinaire." She flashed a grin and offered a hand rough with work callouses, her aggressively forward personality showing. She was almost like a politician on the campaign trail, though the Pernese had no notion of that.

Kyllae was very pleased, at the moment. The instant she'd spotted Astrisabe, she'd watched her. Could this girl be of any use to her? Occupy her time, entertain her? She had been about to go ask if Astri wanted to join her, but that proved unceccesary. Heck, the girl came over herself. And she was open, forward! Often, Kyllae had to drag people around with her, utlizing brute force when her words failed. But they usually lightened up after a drink or two. That, or they threw up. That was always gross. How could you possibly party when you can't hold anything down? Really.
To be honest, Kyllae was, well...unphased by failing to impress. What was the big deal? She still had a few years to go, right? And since thread was supposedly going to start falling again soon...the clutches would come often and be large in size. She had plenty of time to find her perfect companion. She would rather wait to get hers, then end up with a nasty old dragon, like her cousin's Haanyath! Oh what a little cretin that nasty green was. So snappy and stand-offish. Whatever, Kyllae was certain that whatever dragon she got, would be a good one. She would have a brown! At least, that's what she hoped. But Kyllae had a way of making her hopes and reality the same, even if it promised disappointment for the future. But hey, she was always good at getting what she wanted, why would this be any different?
Kyllae returned Astri's handshake firmly, smiling not unwarmly at her, though looking somewhat amused, as if she was laughing at an inside joke. "Why, wine of course!" she laughed. "The drink of kings, queens, bandits and sailors. All of which I am." She treated Astri with a little curtsey, in a playful fashion of course. Kyllae was firmly rooted in the belief of her authority and her ability, her right, to assert it. It meant a lot if she actually ever conceded a bow to someone. "Kyllae, queen of parties and the sea. Captain to the crew of me. What can I do ya for?" she asked, still smiling. But, really, Kyllae was figuring out what Astri could do for her. It wasn't often she encountered someone like this. Perhaps if they bonded enough...Astri could be her first mate! Her little partner. Kyllae enjoyed people, but she didn't like many of them personally enough to have a lot of 'real' friends. If someone was dumb enough to allow themselves to be open, an easy target for stealing...well, Kyllae usually took something, and lost respect for them. Really, did she always have to be such a goodie-two-shoes? Of course not. She was a rebel, and proud of it!
Why, the individuals made the best dragonriders, didn't they? Everyone here was so stuck up, so rigid and steadfast in their rules...they had no mind to improvise, no drive to really succeed. They weren't leaders. They were followers. So what if she wasn't perfect all the time? So what if she had some problems? She was unique, she was fun, and, she wanted to change the world.
Ideas simmering at the back of her mind, as she pondered just how she would deal with Astri. Manipulation? Maybe. There was no guarantee it would work, though Kyllae prided herself on her charisma. Besides, she would have to be able to rely on an actual friend. But she also recognized she might be getting a little ahead of herself. She hazily touched upon the idea that she might possibly be a little disoriented from her drinking. Whatever. Even at half mast, she was way more functional, more amazing than ten of those ordinary candidates. But Astri didn't seem ordinary. Candidate extraordinare? She was a little bold. Kyllae liked it. She liked it a lot.
