My take on Aether:
A superconductive chemical, usually found in liquid form, but can be changed to solid or gas with ease. It's widely common, as it's created by nature in a way scientists have not been able to explain. Aether does not alter any other chemical in any way other than it makes it work efficiently. Adding Aether to a steam engine will make steam generate more energy with the same amount of steam you usually need to power the steam engine of an airship.
It's easily found in the wild, as it glows fainly, and comes in a variety of colors. The most common places are amongst the mountains, where it flows down through cracks, but there are certain places in the world where gaseous Aether lingers about.
Aether can also be used to exchange information, since it's superconductive. The ever so popular Aethernet is powered by Aether, using the chemical in it's liquid form to transfer information from terminal to terminal.
Aether is harmless, odorless, but wrong usage of it could lead to catastrophic events. Since it amplifies the properties of other chemicals, applying too much of it on something could make it react violently. Many a steamship's engine have blown up because too much Ather was injected into the engine.
