Hi!
So...I watched a clip recently on you tube of when the 5th doctor regenerated into the 6th. I noticed something sort-of interesting in a completely pointless way.

When dying, the doctor heard a lot of voices in his head and saw a bunch of faces giving him reasons not to die. Than he heard the Master's voice, screaming at him to "just die!"

...fast forward five doctors, and we have the 10th Doctor begging the Master to "regenerate"

...I don't think it's significant. I just think it's interesting.

...what do you guys think?
...and can you think of any other little bits of interest like this?

Can't think of any other bits off the top of my head.

But that... kind of shows you the difference between the master and the doctor. In a rather black and white 'good vs evil' sort of way.

I'd like to sum this up with a quote from the Curse of Fatal Death!Master: "A universe without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about." (or something along those lines).

IMHO, I don't think they hated each other any more than ..... than Tom hated Jerry.. sure you'd have one running after the other, but when it came down to it, they were rivals.
The Five Doctors shows the Master and the Doctor(s) uniting against a common enemy, and I'm pretty sure the Doctor wouldn't have killed the Master; he was devastated at the end of S3 when the Master was shot, and clearly told him to regenerate rather than die.

You saw in S4 when the Doctor was trying to save Davros -- the creator of the Daleks -- if he would save even Davros, he wouldn't turn around and try and kill someone of his own species.

That may be how the Doctor felt, but the Master hated the Doctor so much it gradually drove him crackers.
You can see him gradually getting more & more obsessive over the years, from just making coolly-intellectual world domination plans to plans that involved world domination but would also hopefully take out the Doctor, to frequently just out-and-out trying to either kill the Doctor or destroy things/places/times he holds dear.
They claim it's looking into the vortex that drove him crazy, but I think that's to avoid all that backstory. Fact is, he just didn't act insane when he was Roger Delgado.

Okay, well I'm biased then, I've seen more of the Doctor's side.

And I enjoyed what few stories I saw of the Classic Series Master. smile
Still prefer that Master over the new one.

Whoa, how'd I miss reading that post?! That's probably really not as pointless as you think, and definitely worth noting, in any case. smile

Parallels are fun to spot (even if I'm wrong in assuming this was one).
Things like that only make me want to see more of the Classic Series. biggrin

I always thought the Master hated the Doctor out of some drive for revenge after he left him trapped somewhere (Can't remember where). After that, he just slowly went bonkers, and the drumming in his head in Series 3 is part of it. There's a part in LotTL when he calls them a "call to war" as though he's waging war on the Doctor.

The Doctor's story about the time vortex... well, he mentioned that some people say that's where it all began, implying that madness due to the untempered schism is just conjecture/rumour.

3nodding That's absolutely how the scene's intended.
Look! Proof!

Davies in DWM#384

I didn't want to trample over the past by introducing something that would rewrite continuity... I came up with a comparatively light origin — it's more a theory of the Doctor's, rather than a blunt description of the day that Baby Master fell into the Cauldron of Evil. It's more atmospheric than factual ... it's all the better for being an image, almost a fairytale, rather than a straight flashback."
