I'm seeing a blend of dieselpunk and steampunk.

I know where they're going with the whole steampunk thing, however, their more "rugged" look, appears dieselpunk...still a bitchin' looking game though.

I take it NOBODY checked the link I posted? It shows, plain as day, they know what steampunk is (or at least, what steampunk looks like). They switched color schemes and had to dumb-down everything in order to please their publisher (Codemasters). No publisher, no game.

And since it's Western Steampunk, you all shouldn't be expecting it to just be Victorian Steampunk's cogs and clockwork but with ten gallon hats and shotguns. confused Do you ever wonder, what happens after the Victorian days in a Steampunk world? Do you not think that these brilliant steampunk scientists would eventually discover steel? And what happens when all that technology gets into the wrong hands? Utopias are not much fun in video games, especially if you want to shoot stuff.

I think the game is best described as "Post-Steampunk." Just because it isn't traditional steampunk, doesn't mean it's not steampunk at all, though.

I did check it out and I loved their original design concepts, I just don't like what they were forced to do instead. It doesn't 'feel' steampunky, although it does look steampunk/diesel punk. If this game is a success and they are given more trust I wouldn't be surprised if they made a game which I would be more interested in. First person shooters are a genre I don't normally play, only with a few exceptions. When I do play them they don't belong to me, I prefer adventure games. I wouldn't buy this game in other words, unless it was something I found to be very appealing due to it's genre.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Steampunk needs to be Polished, Ornate, and Victorian.

In fact, it's quite the opposite. Steampunk requires that touch of the raw mechanical to have any soul at all. It's like the fine difference between Electric and Electronic, know what I mean?

I'm not saying that Steampunk can't have technologies like these, I would be the last person to say that. But, look at it this way... (this is a metaphor, try not to be too literal when imagining this.) Imagine a flying saucer powered by Unexplained Plot Device. Steampunk anachronistic tech is a flying saucer too, but you can see the strings, and that's the heart of its charm. The Unexplained Plot Device can happily fit in, as long as the strings are in front of it.


The guys making this don't care about the strings, and it shows. They even said it themselves, their main design goal was to take the weapons and environments that shooter fans will already be familiar with, and THEN they have the art department Steampunkify it. They're so hung up on what Steampunk looks like that they didn't even bother to think about what it should feel like. After all, they are first and foremost making a shooter, and "everyone knows" what a shooter should feel like, right?

Which makes for a game that looks like a fantastic example of Steampunk, right up until it starts moving. Screenshots are great, but clips make me want to see the strings. There's a certain charm that isn't there.

I think it's fair to point out the difference between a First Person Shooter and a Third Person Shooter here. The primary difference being the player's point of view, and the second and thus derivative difference being camera angles. This game is indeed a Third Person Shooter, in the same vein as Resident Evil, Gears of War, Dead Space, and especially more action-oriented games like Devil May Cry, Assassin's Creed, or the recent Prince of Persia games (as Damnation is obviously more action-oriented than your typical shooter game). It's also worth noting that Damnation is not a fixed over-the-shoulder Third Person Shooter such as Dead Space or Resident Evil where the camera is permanently stuck behind your character, or a "cinematic angle" TPS like Devil May Cry where you can't change the camera angle at all. Damnation is really more of a combination of generic third person shooter and acrobatic platformer, so referring to it as a "first person shooter" is one of those apples-and-oranges things. Sorry for this bit of ranting... I'm in somewhat of a ranty mood at the moment.

I for one am perfectly happy with the idea of a blend between steampunk and dieselpunk. It's not far-fetched at all to think that petroleum based fuels might be used to boil water for steam if the technology for internal-combustion isn't available or developed enough to replace the steam engine itself. It's also not far-fetched to think that after 20 or 30 years (give or take), advanced steam technology may become more streamlined, especially if a consumer culture develops as with modern internal combustion and electronics. There is a point when exposed, raw mechanical bits are impractical or even completely undesirable -- though I do concede that steampunk often defies the practical and logical in favor of stylistic preference and creative license. When I'm playing a video game, though, I don't much care if it "feels" steampunk or not, so long as the game is fun and everything has its place. I know very little about physics and the inner workings of a steam engine, so it won't matter much to me whether they have believable-looking machinery, so long as it looks like steam-based machinery then I'm happy.

In the blog ALL the weapons in their first stage looked better though I didn't like any of the character designs really. I don't really like the form their stempunk took but I do like that they did something with it because I myself am trying to mod my style in a way so I enjoy seeing other takes.

I've been thinking lately, it's kind of nice that they've gone in a different direction with their interpretation of steampunk. Can't be sure whether it would have been better off as a more traditional "copper & brass" steampunk until I've had a chance to play it, though.

Coming out pretty soon! Shame I probably won't be able to afford it for a while...
