Veyes smiled then took him out along several halls and into an area where there was a crack in the wall. It was just as other young candidates were leaving that they walked up. "It's a popular place so take a good look while you can. Everyone likes coming here so you might have to wait your turn on other days."
He took a quick peek himself and saw the eggs he had touched not to long ago. They were all so brightly colored and were such a distraction that Veyes could have just stood there all afternoon thinking about what it would be like to impress to any of the hatchlings hidden under the shells. Yes...that was all that was separating them from the rest of those that were eager to see them...one shell.
"They sure are pretty...and warm too. But don't get your hopes too high. There are horde of candidates around here nowadays and from what I have been told, the dragons are the ones that pick...and they could pick anyone. So it's mostly luck. Just wish for plenty of good luck." He figured he would just state that right away...Keiryann didn't seem the type to want things glossed over. Shells, Veyes dreamt about it all the time but tried to keep reality in mind. At first, he thought that with hard work, he'd up his chances but to be honest, that didn't seem the case here. However, the hard work kept him from making the mistake of loosing site of other dreams...just in case.
He backed away from the crack and let Keiryann take a good look at the brillant eggs. His mind drifting off in that contimplative dreaming he always did when he wanted something so much he could taste it.

chuckling very quietly he understands perfectly .... hearing the blunt trueth is refreshing ... keiryann hated when people skirted around things that he would rather be told flat out, so Veyes telling him like this gave him marks in Keiryann's opinion of him. "i truthfully i have never thought of becoming a dragonrider ... being searched was very strange and not suspected till it happened .... if i dont impress right away im ok with it ... ill try till im too old for impression ... and ill get meself a horde of Flits" he laughs
as Keiryann looks at the eggs through the crack ... 'oh wow' he thinks ' and he quickly sketches the clutch in as great as detail as a few minutes one can do .... 'ill go over it and clean it up later' turning from the crack to Veyes, he sees he is deep in thought ... so he continues to look and sketch the eggs for another few minutes before moving away totally and asking Veyes, "where to now captain?" grinning at the joking nickname,"what is our course heading?"

Veyes leaned against a wall while the other looked and sketched the eggs just beyond the crack. His mind had drifted away to dreamland where he was flying on the back of a ....bronze...no...blue... mm...well how about gold for fun. Either way, he was well on his way to another world by the time Keiryann had spoken up again. It took him a moment to come back to earth when he'd rather have taking one fly around the beaches in his mind.
"Oh..ummm...yeah...where were we...oh yes. Next is the Kitchen and dining hall." He smiled at the joke then turned on his heels and scampered down another hall. "Well, I thought about being a rider but I never thought I would ever get the opportunity. Seemed like luck shined on me the day Raith spotted me." He took him through the back way into the kitchen - the route he usually took when he came to work. "This is where I work in the mornings." he said as he waved to the women in the kitchen. "I work in the meat locker just down the hall very early in the morning so there is fresh meat cut. There is another entrance if you're just coming to eat but I normally just come through here. However, you'll see it when we go into the dining hall.
He poked his nose out to see what food was being served. "Mmm...looks like we are in time to get the tail end of lunch if you want something." Taking up a plate he grabbed some slices of herd roast and mashed roots with gravy knowing that he had cut that meat. The got himself a bit of bread to dip in the thick juices. Picking out a table, he settled into one of the chairs and waited on Keiryann.

"hmmm", the food smelled great. as a seaholder he ate more fish than anything so when his parents had gotten meat such as this it was a treat. loading his plate with the meat and gravy he also adds suitable mashed roots to have the energy later on in the day. looking out into the seating areas he sees where Veyes had taken a seat and joined him.
"do you all eat meat all the time? ..." Keiryann asks as it was significantly different from what he was used to, though he has eaten meat before it was just easier to eat fish back home and cheaper, less of a hassle ...
after asking his question though he digs into his food enjoying the taste of the meat and thinking about the sketches he had done today, what he would have to clean up. He could easily get used to weyr life if things where this interesting ...

"Umm...well it depends on what they get in I think. This isn't like a Hold where you can expect certain food. Like in Ruatha I always knew that there would be meat on the table because lots of herd farms up there. But here, well...they have to get it from the holds and they don't always get the best beasts that's for sure. I've seen fish here but I have been assigned to cleaning and gutting fish. I guess that they do that at the docks or something."
He took a few bites of the roast and then smiled. For such a scrawny beast , he at least had tenderized it enough with the mallet; the tenderizing made it a bit better once it had stewed for awhile. He couldn't say he was a great cook but he knew how to get the meat right for cooking. Needless to say he felt it was a bit of an improvement.
"Mmm...If they can't find the right chores for you expect to be assigned Laundry and helping clean up old weyrs. Ever since I arrived they've been working on cleaning up new places for the hatchlings to move in with their dragons when their big enough. They say they are scouting out a new Weyr since this one is getting so full but I am not sure of any details. Being a lowly candidate doesn't amount to much real information. But I am guessing once they do that there will be a lot of dragons moving to the new Weyr and probably some of us candidates when they are ready for hatchings."

"oh well when at home we typicaly clean the fish on the docks as it made cleaning it less of an issue .... they might do that here .... oh this meat is amazing, really wish i could have had more of it back home..." Keiryann rambles a little. After the brief explanation of the typical fishing routines of fish gutting/cleaning he dug into the food, though he was being rather clean and proper with his eating as he dint want to look bad in front of people of higher ranked than he.
As he finished he waited for Veyes to finish and asked,"so do you know what happens to candidates whom don't impress? do they stay at the weyr or do they go home?"getting up and bringing his plate to area to place where dirty dishes where put, then walking back to the table they had taken up to continue talking or go where ever Veyes needed to go as Keiryann had nothing to do nor did he know where he was to go.

"They might. Just talk to the women in the kitchen...or the Candidate Master. Someone should know." Veyes finished up his plate then snagged one more roll to nibble on while Keiryann cleaned his plate. Veyes didn't seem to mind the talk of gutting and cleaning at the dinner table like some might have. Being that it was a natural part of the daily life of a farmer, it was really hard to find anything that would phase Veyes in regards to hard work.
However, he bit his bottom lip as he tried to come up with a reasonable answer to the next question. "Well, umm...from what I've heard from people...If you have some good skills and fit the Weyr's needs you might get to stay. But a lot get sent home if they don't fit any of the requirement...especially if you're male. But...you can definitely stay until you're 21 and try to impress. After that, well...then you better have either other plans or some invaluable skill if you want to remain here. I...well....I'm not sure if they'd keep me...here but I want to try to learn how to be a dragon healer if they'll let me. They might let me stay because I do a good job in the meat locker but that' isn't what I want to do all my life if you know what I mean." He paused for a moment considering what else to say. "If not, they'll probably drop you off wherever you want to go and you figure it out from there. Me...I'm thinking about a trader's life. I want to explore the world."
He got up and put his dirty dishes into the proper place for the Kitchen help, then returned to the table. "Mmm...Well, I don't have anything I need to do before Candidate lessons this afternoon except study some, so I can show you more areas around the Weyr or take you back to the dorm. I guess you probably should show up to the lessons so you can meet the Candidate Master. What do you want to do?"

Keiryann realizing that his questions might be out of Veyes' league of knowledge shrugs, " im open to either exploring or going back to the bunks ... its up to you."
nodding to the statement about the Candidate Master," yeah i do need to meet him ... *sigh* this is gonna be troublesome at times .... " Keiryann says then looks to Veyes,"lead the way as im still trying to figure this place out ...." *scratches the back of his head kinda nervously*

Veyes smiled cheerfully at Keiryann then said in a comforting tone, "Hey...don't worry it won't be so bad. You'll figure things out soon enough then there won't be much time for you to think about anything but chores and lessons."
Getting up, Veyes walked out of the dining hall taking care not to get to close to any table and avoiding some of the other candidates, "Mmm...well I can show you were things are like the corral and stable, laundry, umm...I can show you what halls lead to the Riders' weyrs but you probably shouldn't go down there unless you're invited. There's other empty weyrs that are being cleaned up...and I can show you were they are in case you get assigned to cleaning them up."
He started plotting his path around the Weyr picking the most efficient route and pointing out the various landmarks; stopping long enough for Keiryann to take notes. "So... let's walk to the cavern where lesson's are held. We get ours at a different time from the Weyrlings...the lucky ones that have impressed." He sighed a little wistfully, Their learning all about how to take care of their Lifemates." He really wanted to be in that class...really wanted to prove himself to be far more than just a farmer. He'd get his first chance with this hatching...and many more to come he guessed.

((sry this took so long ... but the wedding and everything XD ... sorry))
Keiryann sighs heavily, "*sigh* i hope so ... i just cant help but think that im not suppose to be here or that its a mistake that im here ... oh well best not count my dragons before they are hatched ...."
"whatever or where ever you want to go im up to it ..... it would help to be familiarized and have a brief map of the Weyr. but yeah ... i would definitely like to see where lessons are being held as they are more important than anything other than the bunks ... " Keiryann replies to Veyes after thinking the statements he had made
patting Veyes on the back ... "im sure you will impress .... while i think i would have a chance at impressing as a feline is to become a pet .... " Keiryann says kinda encouraging to Veyes and putting himself down

Veyes laughed a little. "Oh...well you have just as much chance as I do with impressing since the dragons pick their lifemates. We really don't have any say in the matter from what I have been told. Even a lazy b*****d could probably impress a bronze if the dragon saw something in the person so really, I guess that in the end you just have to be you when you are with the eggs."
The waiting was starting to make him a bit edgy over time as he wanted to get to the first hatching and put it behind him. Chances were with so many candidates swarming around and with more and more showing up; all he really had in his mind was just a raffle ticket for some unknown prize. That could be said of any of the candidates but as the numbers grew, that ticket became a much smaller opportunity.
"Hmmm....Ok...then why don't I take you to where the lessons are. Once the Candidate Master shows up you can talk to him." With that, he started heading down the hall way towards the lessons cavern. Keiryann seemed very easy going and pretty dedicated from what he could tell. Maybe he'd take him to the meat locker one day and show him a bit about skinning and gutting herd beasts...butchery was a valuable skill until a dragonet was big enough to go get food on its own. Keiryann probably would fare pretty well considering his previous experience.
As he showed him into the cavern, he glanced around and saw that it was empty. "Well here we are. I guess we can just wait for the others to show." He smiled as he sat down on the sands and stretched.
