I play french horn, I got sick at the absolute worst time possible ever for me. My goal was to try out for two youth orchestras, and a summer band camp. I even started taking lessons from another teacher (who btw is amazing) that cost about three times as much as my old one so I could prepare for these. Then I got pneumonia. The doctor prescribed me not to practice until I was 90% better, so thats one week, then I had spring break where I went on a band field trip where we played one concert (with dirt easy music) so thats two weeks without practicing. My lungs are still bad, and I have shortness of breath a lot, but it is not nearly has bad as before. (this is about 2 weeks after spring break). After missing so much practicing, my high range and my endurance died. I can't get completely through my two audition pieces, without my tuning going nuts, and I can't play higher than an A (above the staff), and after doing that I'm basically dead! I've been practicing in all my free time, but my range and endurance won't come back! It took me two months of pit orchestra plus band and orchestra (about 5 hours of playing) to build that up and now its gone. I have already had one of my auditions and it was a flop (the judges were laughing) how do I fix this before my last two!?

try running/jogging. it might help your lungs a bit. other than that, i don't know.

do breathing excersizes to help get used to filling your lungs. at like a 60 bpm, breath in for 2 counts out for two counts, then in 4 out 4, then in 6 out 6, then in 8 out 8, then in 10 out 10, then in 12 out 12, then take one breath and breath out 12 counts, and continue doing that in the same kind of matter, but as it gets easier, increase the counts you take in and let out the breath, you want to completely fill up with air when you breath in, and be completely empty when you breath out. its also a good way to calm down. try it and it should help! make sure when you breath you can see your stomach expand too, as im sure you already knew! lol

I do chorus breathing exercise by placing three heavy books on my dhparam and push them up like my teacher for chorus taught me when I was still in chorus.

If you still have a cough try drinking some hot tea it will help with the cough I know I've been there before with the coughs that don't want to ever leave stare

thanks for all your advice! my auditions are over, and I got accepted for one of the things I auditioned for (I don't know about the other two yet). Once my lungs were completely clear everything got a lot easier. Thanks!
