My marching band is holding auditions for drum major for next year.
The only problem: there aren't any sign-ups thus far.
No one's stepping up, so I wanted to try it out. I'm considering it, but... is it easy? Hard? A little of both? I have no experience with a marching baton, but I can march very well. And whistle calls are really easy for me. Another plus: I have a loud voice when I need it, and I rarely lose my voice.

Go for it! Why not? wink
My drum majors don't use batons, so I can't help you there. But I'd say give it a shot.

I wouldn't know because the drumajors are very different, the marching band I'm in is apparently in cadets. He/she gives us these signals with his mace so I don't know if it's the same in a school's marching band.

I'm not guna say whether u should or shouldn't... but let me tell u a lil abt drum major responsibilities...
U have 2 b the top of the line n ur band... best fundamentals...
U have 2 hold a commanding presence...
U have 2 b responsible...
1st 1 @ rehershal & last 1 to leave...
When sumthin goes wrong, u have 2 keep a level-head... stay calm...
It's more than jus marchin around, & lookin good... U have 2 step up & b a leader... u can't complain abt anything abt band... & if a member needs help w/ sumthin it's ur responsibility 2 help them... even if u don't like them...
there will b times that ppl n ur band will c u as the enemy b-cuz ur n charge of them... times that they won't wana listen... u jus have 2 stay calm & b rdy 4 anything...
Drum major can b a fun responsibility, but it's not all fun & games...
Think abt it... & ask urself, are u rdy 4 the responsibility?

if you think you can do it you should go for it.
...if you cause too much drama (like someone could put a restraining order againsed you) you might not want to bother... theres this one guy that tried out for DM at my school, and our band directer said to one of my friends (a victim of his recent drama) that she wasnt going to let him be DM. Ever.
but, something tells me there arent that many people as stupid as he is, so go for it!
if your bands big you might want to convince a friend to try out with you... bc our band only has 90 ppl and we still need 2 DMs..

Im the Drum Major for my cadet band. From what I know cadet marching band and US highschool marching band are totally different. In cadets we have a mace, and with it we use it to control the band ie. giving cut off signals..marking time, spirals...etc. Its A LOT of fun though, and if you don't try out you might regret it. So just give it a shot. wink

Here's how it works in my band; one junior is assistant drum major, and one senior (who was previously the junior assistant) is head drum major. They switch off football games and parades to split up the responsibility.
lol. They are only taking a junior next year, and I'll be a senior. There goes my shot. Funny thing is, my BD was pissed off that I couldn't do it.
Oh well. There's always college. smile
