I had one , and I went to the emergency room and we were worried it was my appendix (appendicitis). but i got a catscane and they said i had a ovarian cyst. so they said i could go for a appointment at the ob-gyn. should i go if i have one, they said me just joining a sport not to long ago could possibly have something to do with it. but theyre not sure. if i go there, what would they probably do when i go to the ob-gyn?

(sorry if this is the wrong forum, i didnt know which one this belonged in)

If the emergency room doctor recommended seeing an ob-gyn, then yes, you should see one. It never hurts to see one early or just in case. But it can hurt if you put off seeing one for too long.

I've never had a cyst, so I can't tell you exactly what the ob-gyn will do. But I can tell you what a general pelvic exam and pap smear are like. The doctor might take your blood pressure, take a blood sample, weigh you, check your breasts for lumps, and have you pee in a cup to start off. After that you take your clothes off, put a gown on, and hop on a table. The doctor puts a tool in to hold your v****a open. It shouldn't hurt, but it can be be really uncomfortable if you tense up. So try to relax as much as possible. The whole thing is over pretty fast.

So if you have a cyst, the doctor might take a bit longer or do something a bit different, but I would think it would be pretty similar. I had a biopsy of my cervix once, and it was the same process, just 10-15 minutes long instead of the usual 2 or so. You also might have better luck finding someone with an ovarian cyst in the fertility and gynecology subforum.

Out of personal experience, my doctor put me on hormonal birth control that shrank the many cysts that I had. Though, through most of it I was not allowed to participate in any kind of exercise or activity similar..[but I had sex anyway. ><;; ] because of the pain.

Anyway, mine ended up coming back badly and they did an ultrasound and found out how big and how many. Ended up having a lapiroscophy [sp?] to look for endometryosis [sp?] which they found and removed.

Not to say that is your problem.

They will do what Lorien said and that might be able it. They'll talk about it, hopefully give you some information on cysts. The GYN will most likely order an ultrasound, though, so they can see exactly where and how big the cyst is. Hormonal birth control is the first method to get rid of them, and if it doesn't, well, your doctor will decide what to do next. Whether it is give it some more time or do a surgery to remove it.

Oh, you'll have to get family history to back as your grandma, so..see if you can get that info or if your mom can.
