What is the best way to learn how to use the particles and grammar structure in Japanese, like knowing when its better to use Ga instead of Ni,

without actually living in Japan?

Check out Tae Kim's guide. ( www.guidetojapanese.org )

It's got nice example sentences and everything. The only thing is that you need to know your kana, which you probably should know anyway...

aregato, but how would you go about learning a giant list like that? assuming you had no partner?

Oh well the whole thing isn't about particles. razz Just a few.

To practice I just kind of reread all the particle articles (no rhyme intended!) everyday for a while... as I read manga to practice. After you keep on having to look up each particle you just kind of remember. ^^;

If you want the basics simplified:

Hope that helps. biggrin

Stupid particles... :/ Even after 5 years of studying (I've been living in Japan for about 9 months total now, 6 more to go before I finish this school), we are always learning new ways to use them... Luckily, in casual speech, you can actually omit most particles.

Examples:

ぼくはそのまんがよんだことあります。
ぼくはそのまんが、よんだことある。

Both mean "I have read that manga."

Just a little cheat code of sorts. :p Sadly it can also be hard to tell which particles can be omitted... sweatdrop
