"Must be some pretty interesting stuff in those files, huh?" Okassis mused, thinking. He tried to picture himself spending hours in a cramped room, poring over aging papers, digging up the past....
It didn't work so well. He was too used to activity, outdoors, work, purpose! "Soft" work like that was impossible to enjoy, even if there were moments - few and far between as they were - that he could truly appreciate their uses.
The line sounded familiar, vaguely.... "Old Harper bit, isn't that?" Okassis asked. "I never really understood that one. I mean... who points the finger?" He didn't seem too bothered with displaying his ignorance. Whether that was good (in that he was willing to learn), or bad (in that he really didn't seem to have a clue), was in the eye of the beholder.

"Certainly," Jessmet replied. "Of course, some of it is really tedious, and many of the old skins are badly damaged. The heat and humidity really don't help. I do a lot of copying, and then making sure the new copies are organized properly."
The pair had fallen into a comfortable rhythm. Even with light chatter, the chore was going more quickly than when Jessmet had been working alone. She started down one of the many small branching corridors.
She laughed for a moment at Okassis question before realizing he was serious. "It's not a person pointing," Jessmet explained, deliberately trying not to sound condescending. After all, she didn't want to alienate someone who'd offered to help her!
"You know the Star Stones and Finger Rock on the eastern side of the Weyr, right? The sun appears to land on the Finger Rock at the winter solstice. I've seen that myself. And when the Red Star is close enough to start a Pass, if you look from the Finger Rock, the Star is bracketed by the Eye Rock." Again, she used her hands to illustrate.

"Huh... hadn't heard of 'em, actually," Okassis admitted, fascinated. Why hadn't anyone ever told him about these mythical rocks before? They sounded fardling important, and that was an understatement! He supposed there was probably some way to tell for sure when a Pass was going to come, but he hadn't spent enough time around Ista to learn about them.
Now he was curious. "They're right on the east side of the Weyr, you said?" the youth asked, following after Jessmet to a new corridor. "Have you been to see it? Is the Red Star bracketed yet - or does that not happen before Threadfall?" Okassis was brimming with questions, but it was hard to blame him. He was one of the sociable sorts who liked to keep conversation and work step-in-step, and who wouldn't want to know more about this topic!
