One of the stories in my head is a series about a society of mythological creatures attempting to survive on Earth. Some of the characters are terribly cliched (as one of my friends pointed out), but I love it anyway. I'll post tidbits and snippets of backstory here.

If you want to comment on this story, don't post here. Please use the thread "Yl-Th Story Reviews" in the Story Review subforum, okay?

The first backstory I intend to write is that of my angel, Xius. A friend was asking about her, so I'll go ahead and post her here for everyone to see.

Boring Scientific s**t
~~~~
You don't have to read this post if you don't want to. The story survives well enough without it. I'm simply going to post here a rational, scientific explanation of angels and demons based on modern scientific theory.
Angels and demons are life-forms very similar to humans. They're capable of harnessing magic, (something I'll explain later) and they have several physical differences, but psychologically, they are very much the same. They are sentient beings capable of rational thought, human emotion, and everything between the two. Why then, are accounts of their existence so rare?
'Heaven' is another planet. So is 'Hell'. These are the homeworlds of the beings in question. Other worlds exist in much the same way, explaining the existence of other mythiological creatures. Why, then, can we find them on Earth?
Imagine, for a moment, the Earth as a circle on a piece of paper. We've just represented our three-dimensional world in two dimensions. Imagine drawing another circle on a different piece of paper. We'll call this circle Heaven. Now, place one paper on top of the other, so that the two circles are in the same position.
They're both two-dimensional circles. They're in the same place in two dimensions. They are, however, seperated by a third dimension that they are incapable of comprehending. If you look at them, you'll see how close together they are, but they don't even know that the other exists, much less how close it is. Now, imagine a book with a billion pages. On each page is a circle. Even though they're all right next to each other, they'll never see each other, because they can't even imagine the third dimension.
I want to say, 'now imagine that all of the circles became spheres, all exisisting in the same place, but now seperated by a fourth dimension.', but you can't. Humans are incapable of perceiving the fourth dimension. But in theory, the same principle should apply. Another planet could literally be right next to us, only as far away as the width of a single sheet of paper, and we'll never know.
Now, imagine the two sheets of paper again. Imagine one lying flat, and the other standing on top of it, perpendicular, so that they make an upside-down T. Imagine pulling the standing paper through the other, without tearing it. Eventually, the two circles will meet. They will actually exist in the exact same place. In that place, the two worlds will be able to see each other.
You may notice that the two worlds will intersect on a straight line. That's a one-dimensional shape. Therefore, in our three-dimensional world, two worlds meeting would make a two-dimensional shape. We'll call this a 'nexus'.
Now, the two planets won't be together for long, because they each have their own orbit around their own stars on different 'sheets of paper', which we can henceforth call 'planes'. If something stepped through a nexus to another plane while the planets were together, they would be trapped there.
This is where magic comes into play. Two people with a magical connection are seperated on these different planes. They use magic to connect with each other. Even though the two worlds are far apart by now, the magic can still create a nexus that ignores distance. This nexus won't disappear until the spell is broken. Such a nexus can be controlled with magic, and we can now call it a 'portal'.
Assuming all of this is true, we can easily craft the following story.
~~~~~~~~~

An angel in Heaven was out walking, when she accidentally tumbled through a nexus. She was lost and scared, so she tried to communicate to her mother with magic. Her mother 'felt' her daughter calling and secured the magical connection. That connection created a portal between Heaven and Earth. They reported their findings to other angels, who traveled through the portal to meet the native life-forms of Earth.

Eventually, they returned to their homeworld. But they left at least one portal intact, meaning they could appear on Earth at any time. Taking this one step further, we could assume that they have the technology (or magic) to register Earth's distinct energy pattern. They could then use this pattern to create a portal at any time.

~~~~~~~~~
This story is just a story; there are a million different things that might have happened instead. But similar stories could explain the appearance of other creatures.
This is all theoretical, of course, and I could easily have some or all of the details wrong. But it makes sense, in a 'technically possible but certainly improbable' kind of way. Which is the basic formula for science fiction.
And there you have it! I have successfully blended the line between fantasy and science fiction!
