Izzy stretched out and laid back on the sidewalk. The sun was baking the earth, as per usual. The memory of his mothers strained and saddened face, the face he wasn't around to see since he left her a lengthy letter instead of risking a face-to-face, was swimming behind his closed eyes. They stung, and he could feel the sobs coming, but he choked them down. Flinging one arm over his face Izzy felt the tug of his messenger bag. Specifically, the weighted shift of the new front pocket on his chest. Sitting up, he carefully opened the pocket and took out a drawstring bag. Opening it, he pinched some of the dirt in between his fingers and looked at it. He held it up to his green eyes and stared at it, like it would do something spectacular if he just glared at it.
"Dirt." He muttered, opening his mouth and dropping the pinch of dirt onto his tongue and eating it. As he chewed a bit he ran a lanky, dirt covered hand through his tousled brown hair. Bright red stripes above his eyes became more apparent... making his long face seem even longer.
Savoring the taste of the earth he tied up the bag and put it away and laid back down again.

"Well, it is good dirt."

Something was afoot. After the apparent drought of new players, Anubis was delivering his third talisman in a ten-day span. And it was another Aztec - he would have expected this sort of fanatic participation from the Greeks or from his own people, the Egyptians. Even with the Norse it made sense. But the Aztec pantheon had never seemed particularly powerful before. Then again, they had never been given proper means of playing - in the previous incarnation of the Game, they hadn't yet made contact with the playing field. Years later, when the later disciples of the winner appeared, they bowed easily beneath him, threatened by gunpowder and smallpox. But the Aztecs had never fully been forgotten. It happened in all the central American peoples. The old gods remained beneath the imposed ruler, waiting for a time to snap--

--So yes, Anubis supposed it made sense. He ammended his previous train of thought and focused on the task at hand: deliver the little gold bracelet to the boy it matched. The God - Xipe Totec - said the child's name was Izzy and he might find him in Downers.

Well, Downers was ******** huge. But Anubis thought he might be zeroing in. He could sense the boy now. There was only one human being in this whole area. The god took a few steps closer and saw that he was... lying on the ground eating... dirt?

These kids got stranger and stranger.

"They used to have a name for that," he said. "And they called it a disease."

Izzy could feel the ground moving a bit, but he ignored the odd vibration as he rested in the sun. That is, until he heard someone talking to him. He jumped up- well, more of a trip as he tried to push himself up, fall back down, pick himself back up- and slowly backed away a few steps.
"W-what's a disease?" He said, hands wringing the strap on his back pack. It took him a few seconds to realize that the man standing before him had... ears? Taking yet another step back he resisted the urge of curling up in a ball. Slowly he remembered the warnings of odd looking people- and creatures- that would attack him, but he sensed no hostility from this... man.
"Do you mean the dirt thing? I-I just like dirt." Izzy mumbled. He was starting to loose feeling in his fingers, so he loosened his grip a bit. His knees felt a bit weak, and he breathed in and out a bit rapidly. In his head he tried to calm down, but he was too busy running through escape routes in case this all took a turn for the worse.
"Wh-who are you?" He asked, eyes glancing left and right. 'Please don't kill me.' Izzy thought to himself. 'I'm just here to run errands...'

Anubis laughed and held up his hands to show he was unarmed. The bracelet glittered between his fingers. "As am I," he nodded. "And it would seem I'm almost done."

He held out the gold bracelet towards the boy. "I am Anubis, referee of the Game," he explained, "And this is a token inviting you to join the fray."

"Xipe Totec has chosen you."

The bracelet glittered in the light, and Izzy could feel a pull to the shiny object.
"Anubis? Is-isn't that some sort of.... God? And who's Xipe T-totec? The game? Is that why everyone's talking about gene splicers who k-k-kill each other?"
His eyes still glued to the bracelet, Izzy's mind raced a hundred miles an hour. If he played this 'game' he could stop being so scared at everything, right? Why would he need to be afraid of monsters if he was a monster himself?
Finally breaking his eyes away from the bracelet he looked back at Anubis.

"Wh-what happens if I accept?"

"If you accept," said Anubis, "And you have no choice but to accept - no one has ever turned down an invitation to join the Game - you will begin receiving divine guidance from Xipe Totec. He will inform you of your mission and your goals in order to fulfill his vision."

"The winner stands to rule the world as a god on earth," he added. "Like Jesus, except more of a badass."

He wasn't sure the kid would even get the reference. Most people didn't.

"The gene splicers are something entirely different," he assured the boy. "Players fight, yes, but they're far above petty gene modders."

Izzy blinked and his eyes narrowed a bit.
"So if I d-don't join..." He let the sentence trail off. Chewing on his lip he listened carefully. His interest sparked at being a 'god on earth'. He would finally be able protect himself?
"I could p-protect myself." He said mostly to himself. Taking another look at the bracelet he nodded a little. "Okay. I-I'll j-join your game."

Anubis held out the bracelet for the boy to take. The kid had spunk going for him, at least. "Good luck," he said, and then added, grimly, "And let's hope for your sake that we do not meet again."

Once he was sure the boy had his talisman, Anubis left. He had places to go and gods to see, after all.
