It was a beautiful day. The sun shone down on the mountain landscape, making the light dusting of fresh snow glitter... After only a few seconds of looking at it - even from inside the cave - sunspots danced before Kamia's eyes. She turned away from the sight, and from the opening of the cave. Now wasn't the time to be distracting herself with beautiful views. She needed to figure some things out.
It had been almost a week since Kamia had gotten trapped down in a canyon with an injured side. A male named Spruce and his cousin, Harmoniae, had found her and helped her out. Harmoniae had gone to get her some food, and Spruce had taken the shy female to his and Harmoniae's cave.
Kamia had been amazed by how wonderful the cave was; it was large and open, with soft moss on the floor that cushioned your every step, and a crisp, clean stream flowed through the middle of it.
In the midst of her amazed silence. Spruce had attempted to kiss her. But right before he had, Harmoniae had come back.
No matter how many times Kamia replayed the scene in her head, it didn't make sense to her. Why would Spruce try to kiss her? She wasn't very pretty, she was painfully shy, it was obvious that she was awkward around him... She was dead weight, helpless, and she needed his and Harmoniae's help to get food while she was injured.
Why would he like her?
Harmoniae had stuck close to Kamia after that, keeping a close eye on her cousin, so that Kamia had never had a chance to ask Spruce about what had almost happened. Kamia was partially glad for that; if the opportunity had ever come up, Kamia was sure that she wouldn't have been able to ask. She probably would've run away, screaming.
In that week or so, Harmoniae had made Spruce do all the hunting, never letting Kamia out of her sight. No doubt she was trying to protect Kamia from her flirtatious cousin... Kamia wasn't entirely sure whether to be grateful or annoyed... But anyway, today Harmoniae had gone out hunting... with Spruce. And Kamia had the cave to herself.
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and began trying to piece her thoughts together into something that vaguely resembled sense.

Spruce the Luck stretched in his sleep. He was curled up in a natural alcove in the cave that he had lined with moss and fragrant evergreen boughs. It was a comfortable place, and once he had been in it for fifteen minutes or more, it was warm, too. Warmth was good, though it made him all the more reluctant to get up. Of course...that wasn't the only thing keeping him napping in his bed...Kamia was at the entrance.
Had it really only been a week with the pretty dragon hanging around? Spruce had been born in an all-female pack with a tendency towards lesbianism. While that meant that none of them were sticks in the mud, it meant that they viewed him as a bit of a...freak because he had a father. And was male. He sighed again. Harmoniae thought of him as an idiot, but his second cousin was, well...herself. Kamia didn't mind the fact that Spruce was weird; she liked him, at the very least as a friend. He wasn't a blip in tradition like he was in the pack.
And she was pretty. Once again, he felt like the name he had given himself: Spruce the Luck. He was lucky; he had found this cave, he had found Kamia in the first place, and maybe, just maybe, he had found his first love. She was...beautiful. She was also smart, and she wasn't so proud that she would consider it humbling herself to hang out with him. He liked her...No, I love her. My heart speeds up...I want to spend all my time with her...Now if only I could get her to see I love her.
Spruce sighed and woke up fully. Out of habit, he glanced around the cave. Yep, Kamia was by the entrance...but...?
"Hey, Kamia?" he called out, getting to his feet. "Where's Harmy?"

Spruce's voice filled the air right in front of Kamia. A daydream, of course. Brought on by all her thinking about him... After all, he was out hunting with Harmoniae. He wasn't in the cave, and she would've noticed if he'd come back in through the entrance...
But... If this was a daydream... Wouldn't his voice be saying something... meaningful? I love you, Kamia. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I don't mind that you're shy at all. Now that was a daydream... 'Hey Kamia, where's Harmy?' that sounded like something he'd say just casually, like while they were eating a meal or something. It sounded like something... that... wouldn't come out of a daydream.
Kamia's eyes whipped open, and she stumbled back a few steps. Spruce! He was real! He was here! Hadn't he been--?
"Sh-She's out h-h-hunting!" she cried, in a voice way too loud for responding to a perfectly normal question, "a-and you are, too! A-at least I th-thought you w-were! I-I-."
With those last few stammered syllables, Kamia's mouth clamped shut, teeth clacking together audibly. Her eyes were wide with surprise and a bit of terror.
I just totally blew it, she thought to herself in amazement, I acted like such a freak! Oh my gosh, I'm so stupid...

Spruce shivered at Kamia's words. She sounded shocked, nervous. There was a trembling in her voice not often present. If he had been talking to anyone else, Spruce would have closed his eyes, but he couldn't, not when he was looking straight at Kamia. The stars on her pelt seemed to flicker a little in the sunlight as he struggled to translate the tone of her voice.
There was a warmth in the startlement. Almost like a hand held out in the darkness to see the way. I guess I'd sound like that if I was more nervous... Spruce shook his head. He was lucky to find her. It was too much to ask that she might love him now the same way he loved her.
He padded forward and sat down next to the entrance, a tail length away from her so as to put her at her ease. "No, I decided to stay behind, you know...in case you needed me," Spruce replied cheerfully. Cautiously, in case she rejected him, he let a warm softness enter his eyes. If she doesn't return it, I'll feel like a fool. But better to feel a fool than to live lonely. There was a philosophy to live upon.

Kamia cringed slightly as Spruce came forward and sat down beside her, a respectful distance away, but still too close for her to be comfortable... Kamia immediately cursed herself and tried to look at ease... It was difficult... When he was this close...
"O-oh," Kamia stammered... He stayed behind... In case I needed him?
Kamia did need him... But probably not in the way he was thinking... He no doubt meant 'in case you need someone to hunt for you' or 'in case your side really started hurting again'...
Oh. That's it. Kamia realized to herself bitterly, He stayed behind because I'm helpless and pathetic and he feels sorry for me...
"Well you didn't need to stay behind," Kamia snapped, anger washing away her usual stammer. "I would've been fine--" Kamia paused, suddenly struck by a strange look of... something... in his eyes. "O-on m-my own."

Cringing, Spruce shuffled his paws. Stupid, stupid, stupid! Kamia's survived on her own for a long time now, of course she'll be touchy still about needing help! He tried to shove the feeling of rejection out of him. She didn't know how he felt, there was no way she could be rejecting him yet. He just needed to hold on until he could be sure that he could tell her.
"Well...I...I understand...I mean, if you..." He sighed. He honestly had no idea how to say this. "Well, I meant that if you suddenly needed my help for something--not sure what, but you know...just in case...be prepared..."
Say it, say it, say it! He might never get an opportunity, just say it, say it, so that she understands how you feel! "...Because...I find that I need you sometimes. Just to know you're there. It makes me happy," Spruce explained. There was still a...lameness to his voice, but he quickly scooped up his confidence from its usual bed in the center of his being. "Knowing you're here lets me know there is a beauty in the world, even in the dark of winter." Don't wink, don't flirt, this is for real, let her know this is serious business, not idle play!

"Well...I...I understand...I mean, if you... Well, I meant that if you suddenly needed my help for something--not sure what, but you know...just in case...be prepared..."
Kamia's brow furrowed in confusion. What was he trying to say?
"...Because...I find that I need you sometimes. Just to know you're there. It makes me happy."
Kamia's heart stopped. He needed her? The same way she needed him? She... She made him happy? Well, he made her happy. Happy, nervous, awestruck, anxious to the point of feeling sick to her stomach... The truth was, Spruce brought out a large range of emotions in Kamia.
"Knowing you're here lets me know there is a beauty in the world, even in the dark of winter," Spruce continued seriously.
Heat flooded to Kamia's cheeks, and she stared down shyly. "A-a-are--," Kamia paused, took a deep breath, and tried again, "Are you... joking?" There was no indignation in her tone... She honestly didn't know whether he was trying to be funny, or if he was serious, or if he was mocking her...
In any case, the idea of Kamia being... 'A beauty in the world'... It didn't sound... possible to her. He couldn't be serious... But he sounded serious... Kamia honestly had no idea what to think...

Spruce shuffled his paws anxiously as he watched Kamia's reaction. He could hardly believe the change that it brought out in her. She seemed...excited? That must be why she's stumbling like that...Do I make her excited like that, or am I just the first guy to say it? He wiggled his mustache, letting his small smile to grow on his face.
"I'm not cruel, Kamia. I would never lie to you, or any other female, about that. I really do..." He hesitated before saying it, not because he did not truly feel it, but because he didn't know how she would react. Would she run? Would she laugh at him? Would she be shocked, or faint? There's only one thing I can do. Plunge in like a rock through thin ice. "I really do love you, Kamia," Spruce murmured softly. "I've loved you since I met you. You're strong, independent...You're stubborn...And you're beautiful. I feel like my name; I feel lucky to know you...do you feel lucky knowing me?" he asked softly. Too late he realized how desperate he sounded. Drat! Girls hate desperation!

He was smiling. He was laughing at her. He hadn't been serious at all, it was just a joke. He didn't like her the same way she liked him. Kamia's hopes fell in an instant, as that small smile crossed his face. Of course he didn't like her. He could probably get any girl he wanted... and why would he ever want her... Kamia looked down at the ground, trying to keep tears from coming to her eyes.
"I'm not cruel, Kamia. I would never lie to you, or any other female, about that. I really do..."
Kamia looked up in shock. What was he saying now? Was he... Was he just trying to keep up the joke, or... Or was it a joke at all? Was he really serious now?
"I really do love you, Kamia." She nearly fainted. He... He sounded sincere, but... "I've loved you since I met you. You're strong, independent...You're stubborn...And you're beautiful. I feel like my name; I feel lucky to know you...do you feel lucky knowing me?"
Kamia was silent for several long moments, trying to reboot her brain enough to respond. Finally, she nodded. A short jerk of the head, which could more accurately be called a muscle spasm than a nod. Then she nodded again, more smoothly this time, a definate affirmative. Then, in case he still hadn't gotten the picture...
"Yes." she whispered.

((I smell a Kodak moment just waiting to be spoiled...))
Spruce watched as Kamia nodded--once, twice--then the blossom danced softly on her tongue. His eyes grew wide and he nuzzled her as his heart slammed against his chest in a triumphant war beat. "Kamia..." he whispered back, and the word sounded like a battlecry of beauty and hope. "I love you, Kamia..." He nuzzled her tenderly as he gazed into her violet eyes.
One stupid slip and that freakin' lame stag managed to kick her in the knee. "You're one dip who won't be kicking anyone else!" Harmoniae grumbled as she dragged dinner back to the cave. She stopped suddenly as she heard low voices at the entrance; as quietly as she could, she dropped the deer and stood just outside the entrance, her side pressed against the outside as she listened to the tender words being exchanged. Kamia...and Spruce?! She's antisocial, he's a flirt! How can this work out?! Spruce, if you break her heart, I'll strangle you with my chain!
((I knew it. Harmy--professional Kodak Moment Ruin-er.))

"Spruce..." Kamia began, with no idea what else she wanted to say. She ducked her head into his shoulder, blushing, unable to speak.
((Gack, sorry for short post. XD My muse is, like, gone at the moment... And unless Harmy comes back in soon, there's not much we can do besides having them 'nuzzle' each other. XD))

((It's okay xD))
He held her tighter with his tail, leg pulling her tight against his ribcage as he basked in the glow of this feeling. Who knew it could feel so good...? "I love you..." Spruce whispered again.
Alright, that's gone far enough, I should think! Harmoniae snatched up the deer once more and dragged it roughly into the cave entrance. "Lunch is here!" she said happily. She pretended not to notice Spruce's startled jump as she walked in. Instead, she merely smiled innocently. "Spruce, can I talk to you for a few minutes...you know, outside. Alone." The look on his face changed from contentment to horror in a matter of seconds. She almost instantly regretted the tone. But it's necessary. If he doesn't really love her, I'm going to stop this right now!

Kamia jumped and scrambled backward, away from Spruce, as Harmoniae entered the cave. "H-H-Har-Ha-," Kamia was too startled and embarressed to even get the female dragon's name out. She bowed her head, blushing furiously as Harmoniae addressed Spruce, venom in her voice.
