Bevan could not help but to feel irritated. Well, to be honest, he was always irritated with something or another, and this was just a further irritant. His brother was at this Weyr. Of all things, he had hoped that he would end up at a separate Weyr than his brother was at, but here he was, a place that Kiriwar had already seeped into and made himself known at. Sitting in a sprawl outside, Bevan sighed heavily, rolling his eyes and wrinkling his nose, having nothing more than an utmost distaste for his older brother. Kiriwar was an annoyance and a b*****d who really should just vanish off the face of Pern, please.
"Grubby b*****d," he mumbled unhappily, the thoughts of his brother just souring his mood further, before he sighed heavily and took up a piece of bread, biting harshly into it and chewing it as he looked up at the sky, wondering what to do next. Maybe he'd head to the Hatching Grounds, go bother the brats who poked around the crack in the wall, so they'd scoot and he'd get a look. That sounded good. Finishing off his bread, Bevan got to his feet and tromped inside, making his way towards the Hatching site.

Nandeli, on the contrary, was currently very pleased with herself. Her network of friends and potential drama fodder was getting bigger with each passing day. Soon she would know about all of the secret relationships and scandals in the whole Weyr! Well, that wasn't true. But she would totally be on the ball with the Candidates, and everyone knew that Candidate love affairs were the next best thing to greenrider flights. It was only a matter of time before someone got pregnant or dumped and Nan wanted to be first on the scene.
This morning had consisted of checking all dark corners to look for such scandal. So far she'd only found two Candidates exchanging marks over a bet. It had been a boring bet too, not even worth mentioning to the rest of the kitchen staff. What she needed was some real drama. She was just on her way to check the one with the crack into the Hatching Sands when she spotted a rather unhappy looking boy. Nan knew that look anywhere. Someone had definitely just been rejected. Keeping her grin to herself, she hurried to catch up to the boy, matching strides with him once she got close enough.
"You look awful unhappy. Had a falling out with someone?" she asked with complete sincerity.

Bevan had not been expecting to run into anyone on his way there. He glanced up at Nandeli when she spoke to him, taking a moment to realize that she was, in fact, actually talking to him. Never let it be said he was a bright boy. He snorted quietly and rolled his eyes, looking away as he just continued walking. Maybe she'd leave. He hoped.
But the further he walked, the less likely it seemed. "No," he growled out finally, lifting his chin stubbornly. "I'm just angry. Dealing with a bunch of annoying bugs all day." He shot a pointed glare at Nandeli with those words, narrowing brown eyes in annoyance. "I'm really just hopin' for some peace and quiet. So buzz off."

If Nandeli was the type to be discouraged by a couple of cold shoulders she would have been out of the gossip business a long time ago. Persistence, she had learned, was a good way to get people to just spit out what you wanted them to tell you. If persistence failed, there was always her super mega watt smile. That never failed.
Thus, she continued to smile as she sauntered on after him, knowing very well that people who were dumped took a while to talk. It was okay, kid. Nan would help solve all your problems. You just have to tell her who it was who rejected you. "Aaaah, bugs. Well, they do tend to make themselves known when the weather gets hotter than normal. I don't like VTOLs myself actually." She ignored the glare, still beaming. "And why ever would you like peace and quiet? This is a very busy Weyr, you know. All the peace and quiet you'll ever find would be in a dark corner, and I don't recommend those, especially if you were recently dumped."
She paused for a moment, as though considering something, before she said, "It wasn't that L'mel fellow was it? I swear he hits on just about anything, even when they're half his age. I mean you can't be more than eleven turns!"

With each word, Bevan's shoulders tensed further and his fingers flexed in and out of fists. But, as much of a bully as he was, he would never hit a girl, so this one had that counting lucky for her. He grit his teeth hard and lengthened his strides, trying to get somewhere faster -- anywhere, really. He didn't even really want to get to the Hatching Grounds now. Anywhere that this girl was not was optimal. So he was now walking in hopes of reaching the male Candidate quarters.
L'mel? "Who the hell is L'mel?" he snarled out, glaring at Nandeli, before finally stopping when she commented on his age, glaring down at her. "No. It wasn't this... L'mel or whatever, it wasn't anyone. And I'm fourteen turns, damn it. I just don't want to bloody be here, where that damn b*****d of a brother of mine is. Kiriwar's already infected this damn place, and I'd rather be at another Weyr!"

Unfortunately for Bevan, even the male Candidate quarters weren't safe from Nandeli. She was known for barging in whenever she felt the need to, especially since she knew a fair number of the current male candidates. Those who didn't know her got used to her presence fast enough. Those who had heard of her before usually made themselves scarce. Getting caught in the act of doing something scandalous by the Nose was like doing it right into the middle of the Bowl.
"You don't know who L'mel is?" Poor kid! She had better warn him. "He's a bluerider here and he looooves anybody he can flirt with, guys and girls. Oh he's nice enough, but you definitely have to watch out for the ulterior motives. You never know when he's going to pounce!" At that she looked over her shoulder as though he could be behind them at that very moment. It was always possible. "And just because you say it's no one doesn't mean I'm actually going to believe you!"
Unless, of course, you just admit to being Kiriwar's brother. Now that was a surprise. She stepped back a little to scrutinize him, before she said, "Well… you're not near as cute as he is, but I guess you still have some growing up to do. Are you sure you're his brother and not Gamoira's?"

Bevan narrowed his eyes. This girl was more than irksome, and he just stared blankly at her as she rambled on and on about things he really did not care much for. More or less, he turned her out, waiting for her to trail off so he could say his part, hoping to chase her off as soon as possible. He didn't have time for gossipers...
"Yes, unfortunately, I'm sure that I'm Kiriwar's brother," he growled out at last, stepping touch closer and drawing himself to his full height, glaring down at Nandeli. He hoped to at least intimidate her a little into listening to him. "And I'm getting real tired of being compared to him, and of hearing you talk, girl. So, beat it. I don't want to talk to you, I don't want to look at you, and I don't want to hear any more about my deadglow of a brother." With that, he turned on his heel to begin walking away, searching for his personal area to hide away in.

"Well, I don't think it's unfortunate that you're his brother. I think you're very lucky to have such a friendly boy as your relative." The Nose put both hands on her hips and stared pointedly up at Bevan. It was easy to be fearless when you were familiar with the rules of the Weyr. Any kind of violence between Candidates would be severely punished, and everyone knew her well enough to know that she didn't go around hitting people. Not to mention if she lost her Candidacy she could still stay at the Weyr. Bevan wouldn't be so lucky.
Unfortunately, the boy was already turning and leaving. All of his talk about beating it and being quiet fell on deaf ears, as Nan wasn't entirely finished with him. She would decide when the conversation was over. He should have realized that persistence was her middle name. "His boyfriend is pretty cute you know, even if you think he's a deadglow. Are you sure you don't want a boyfriend too?" Nandeli called after him, intent on keeping the conversation going. "Because I could arrange that!"

Bevan heard Nandeli follow after him and nearly growled in frustration, gritting his teeth and hunching his shoulders. He could not hit her, unfortunately, could not even shove... He refused to get kicked out of the Weyr, especially not over some stupid fight over his stupid brother... He hated this. He glanced over his shoulder at Nandeli, only to realize that she was right beside him.
"NO," he growled furiously when asked if he wanted a boyfriend, hunching his shoulders and clenching his fists. "I only like women. My brother is the freak of the damn family!"

"Yeah, sure that's what they all say!" Nan put both hands on her hips in her usual 'haha I have you now' pose. Bevan was lucky she hadn't started pointing fingers at him yet. That usually followed a declaration such as hers. "I'll bet you're secretly envious of your brother's ability to be so openly gay and that's why you hate him so much. You know, if you could just be more open and accepting about yourself this kind of thing could be avoided without the hard feelings." She raised both of her eyebrows at him, talking as though she was infinitely knowledgeable on the subject at hand.
"Besides, if the older brother is gay, there's a good chance the younger ones are too. I've seen it happen before. Family of greens, all brothers." Well, she hadn't exactly seen it happen, but she'd heard about it, and that was as good as being there.

Bevan just stared at Nandeli, more than baffled with her accusations and her ideas, not sure where she would have come up with this nonsense. He sighed unhappily, shoving a hand through his hair and growling quietly, before giving her a really irritated look, hoping to spoke her off just a little bit. "I don't know where you're coming up with this s**t, but I have no interest in takin' it like my idiot brother does. He can go off and be gay on his own, and I'm going to keep trying to forget he exists, if you other Candidates would just stop bringing him up to me."
with that, he turned to go again, muttering on his breath. Maybe he should look into going into a different Weyr, just to get away from this mess and from hsi brother. It was all just too irritating...

"You're the one who brought him up you know! I wouldn't have even known you two were related if you hadn't been so eager to tell me about it. Why not just pretend you're not related and then nobody'll hassle you about it?" He might have tried that tactic, but now that she knew that was practically like telling the whole Weyr. Nan was a very effective way of getting information around, though most of the time that information was the kind that shouldn't be passed around.
Nandeli considered going after him, but decided she'd had enough of pestering him. He wasn't exactly willing to tell her anything that she didn't already know, and he probably didn't know anything important anyways. Better to let him sulk now so she could go and spread the word that he was looking for a girl to break through his tough exterior. Romance solved every problem.
"Well it was nice talking to you! I'll see you around!" Waving energetically at his back, Nan turned and trotted back the way she had come. She had to spread the word!

"That was talking?" grumbled Bevan, glancing over his shoulder and feeling relieved that the girl was finally going to leave him be. Despite his definite dislike of being attacked and interrogated, and now dislike of this girl, he lifted a hand to wave slopping at her, before continuing on his way to hopefully get some peace and quiet at last.
