What if we base it off a famous author's work or something, but you can't tell without thinking about it?
It's perfectly understood. If you read the first post here, it specifically said
another member's work. Being inspired or fan fiction is perfectly understandable, reasonable, and fair game. But you may want to give credit to the original work and author if you're unsure if people will not realize that you piece is based off another work and not your own idea. I really don't expect to ever have to enforce this, but one can never be too sure.
