Greetings, my fellow hard-working steampunk friends! I am hoping that you all can help me with suggestions that have to do with a NERF gun I have been working on.

I spent the past week working on this at a friends house. I'm planning on taking it with me as a prop for a steampunk costume to a convention this weekend(WOOT for SakuraCon!). It's a simple NERF N-Strike Maverick that I have gutted and painted so far. I know, the paint job on the handle is a little messy. It seems I didn't press the tape down hard enough before I started painting it.

Anywho, I was hoping that I could get some ideas as to what I could add to make it a little more steamy. My Dad has been helping me, and we've been bouncing ideas off of each other, but I thought some outside influences would be nice.

Edit: Before anybody says anything about the orange section on the end of the barrel. I kept it that way for the sake of the convention officials and police in the area. They're not always the brightest bunch up here where I live. I plan on painting it after the convention.

Thank you for any and all suggestions. I really appreciate it!

Wires, screws, lights, and maybe fake gears. I've been doing the same, though I lost my Maverick

I know that it's a Nerf gun but is there any way that you could modify it to hold a small quantity of water? Not for squirting but for putting in a bit of dry ice to make a fake steam come out of either the barrel or a hole in the top.

Perhaps the insides of a stop watch with the gears exposed and moving attached to both sides?

Lights might be over-kill.

Nice paint job BTW. Is that hot rod sparkle paint on the main body?

Try adding a small guage or paint some straws bronze for steam pipes!

All very good suggestions...the only thing I have to add is that I'd dilute a little black acrylic paint in water and dab it in the nooks and crannies to give it a nice aged, tarnished effect. It's looking good so far!

Here's what you do.
Remove the handle, take dimensions of the handle, mark dimensions of handle down, carve entirely new handle out of wood, place new handle back on instead of old one.

It honestly wouldn't be hard, the gun would be more durable, and it would add a nice weight and heftiness to it.

EDIT: By "handle" I meant the entire frame of the gun. Just take it apart, you can use a jigsaw to create an exact replication of the frame, allowing for the barrel and movable parts to function the same.

Oh! Try pulling apart clicky-pens! I found that some pens have bronze-coloured springs instead of silver ones ^^
