On every calorie counter I look at it says on an average day of me doing nothing I'd burn about 2500 calories, but I try hard to only eat 1400 calories (which is hard some days and not other days.)

Wouldn't this mean I'd be losing weight all the time? I mean, obviously not, but it just confuses me.

It seems so weird that I'd burn that many calories doing nothing,

That is your basal metabolic rate.
It takes into account how much your body burns doing it's basic functions
(ie; breathing, circulating blood)
if you are still quite heavy you burn more calories supporting your body mass. More mass = more area for blood to flow, heavier weighty to carry when walking...

I think it also assumes that most people are generally moving around,
e.g. walking around their house, basic daily chores, climbing stairs. I doubt it means 'you burn 2500 doing absolutely nothing but sit on the couch' I would calculate much lower for that.

This is also why it is generally easier to lose weight when you are heaviest,
because of the amount of calories your body burns just supporting itself. The lower your weight, the lower your basal metabolic rate.

Groovy's got it!
Unless you're working around the house nonstop every day, calculate your BMR with a sedentary lifestyle for a more accurate description.

It's weird like, I always consider myself sedentary. Because even though I'm at the stables lifting, shoveling, and riding 3 or 4 times a week for hours at a time, I want to count that as exercise, not lifestyle. You can count activities as lifestyle or as exercise, not both. I hope that makes sense x__x

I have been calculating it at sedentary though, or else I wouldn't even question it. gonk

So yes, in theory, if you eat less than what you burn, you should be losing weight.
