Jessan groaned to himself even as he cheerfully accepted his assignment for the day. How could he get stuck changing the glows and clearing out some of the old stock rooms? Pressing time was coming and he knew that tithes of fruits would be coming in soon for preserving. These preserves would be vital during the cold seasons for those who had weaker systems. Still, it was an important job and one that he would do to the best of his ability.
Taking the steps to the lower caverns two at a time, he went to the supply room where the good glows were kept. He never really stopped to consider what made them glow or why they lasted like they did. That type of thinking was above his head. But he shuddered at the thought of seeing any larger crawling bugs... All those legs, like the trundle bugs had just grossed him out. Something he made sure that very few people knew.
His ears caught the sound of another person approaching. Jessan wondered who else would be cleaning with him. He really stopped paying attention after his assignment. Cool blue eyes searched to see who he would be working with today.

Glows? Changing glows? Working with animals was one thing, but this was a little out of his element. Jiriar had groaned wordlessly to himself when he'd been informed of his duties of the day, dragging his heels through the halls as he made his way to the storage room. Well, to be honest, he did get lost for a moment, peering idly down a branching set of halls and taking the wrong one before he'd finally managed to backtrack and find where he was supposed to be. Snorting to himself, the young man exasperatedly flicked long bangs from his face even as he ducked into the supply room, glancing sidelong at his apparent partner for the day.
Now, it was a hard thing to ruffle Jiriar--but he had to double take to make sure he was seeing things correctly.
"Jessan?" He sounded incredulous, hazel eyes a little wider than normal before a broad grin broke across his face. "Shards, cousin! What are you doing here?" His mind was racing eagerly over the possibilities, quickly stepping over to the man to sling a long arm about his shoulders for a fond squeeze. "I haven't seen you in ages!" What strange circumstances these were...

Not that Jessan didn't mind getting hugged by men or women but when a long arm and a familiar face showed it, to say he was a little disappointed was accurate. His cousin! Out of all the places of Pern to run into each other, they had to do it in a darkening hallway. Irony for sure.
"Jiriar? What am I doing here, what are you doing here? I got Searched about half a Turn ago just before Winter Season. Last time we came down to Uncle's place, he said you had left on an errand of sorts." There was a question in that statement but Jessan didn't dare ask it out loud.
Once, Jiriar and he had been close like brothers. Nearly a Turn apart in age, whenever the family got together it was always fun for them. Exploring, spooking the beasts, talking about pretty boys and girls, and other mischief. Then as Jiriar got older, they grew apart some. Jessan missed that closeness they once had. "Let me guess, you got Searched too! But what did Uncle think of that?"

"Da never told me!" Now he sounded indignant, but he was still grinning, so he clearly wasn't too upset. "He might have forgotten, if I'm thinkin' right... That was around the time I was trying to become a journeyman." Yes, he and Jessan had been very close once--but Jiriar had found himself more and more absorbed with his craft until it'd nearly eaten away all his free time. He hadn't seen his cousin in what felt like Turns, much less had the time to pull all their usual stunts with him!
"You'd be right. Happened just recently." The lanky man would grin, absently scratching at his cheek in a pleased sort of way. So it ran in the genes! Well, he couldn't say he wasn't grateful to have a bit of family here with him in this strange, otherwordly place--particularly Jessan.
His grin faded a little when the other mentioned his father, jerking his shoulders up in a helpless shrug. "He wasn't happy, to be honest." He still didn't understand why, but it didn't help to brood over it like a peckish wherry. "How'd your family take it? Mighty impressed with you, I hope." He'd be content to chat all day if it meant not having to deal with those damn glows..

Jessan rubbed his chin thoughtfully. He had been much more interested in the field work of Herding-husbandry and such. Who wanted to be stuck indoors all day? Certainly not him. Speaking of which, he changed the first of the dead glows. The sooner they got the job done, the better.
"My folks? Thrilled over the moons. Of course, all the little ones were jealous and begging me to come back if I Impress. We were bringing in our tithe to the Weyr when this big ol' blue came up and got it in his head that I was Weyr material." Jessan shook his head, the recalling the moment when the blue picked him out of everything there. "I'm kinda hoping for a blue, myself."
