Denied.
If there was ever a face in history that conveyed the expression a man gets when his partner has suddenly and inexplicably teased him for no good reason, Vale had it.
Carrot and stick, Vale. Carrot and stick.
Though Quinn had a point, he supposed. But he'd grown up watching his parents do the same thing, and it hadn't disturbed him. Maybe it was different for ladies.
Folding his arms placidly and leaning back into the couch, he watched as Quinn slowly and surely realized the sad truth of Vale's home. The despondent look on his face was pretty entertaining - matched perfectly by Sydni's laughter and enthusiasm for the drooping wings.
"We have a radio," he suggested helpfully, trying not to smile. "And lots of books and games." Okay, so maybe he was smiling. And maybe it was pretty clear that he was all too amused by Quinn's sadness. "You like puzzles?"
Maybe Valeriu really did have a bit of evil in him.
But their home had never had a television. His parents were pretty traditionalist - even using old typewriters instead. Valeriu hadn't minded the lack of a television. He'd found other, more productive things to do.
Maybe it did explain a lot.

"Yah, I like puzzles." He slipped down onto the couch next to Vale, and curled up against his chest. "But not right now." He looked down at Sydni, making sure she wasn't paying attention, then turned to Vale and gave him a quick kiss.
"Well, I should probably be going. I have to go grocery shopping so that I can have dinner for mom, tonight. Something canned, I'm an awful cook." An idea appeared to just occur to him. "Or we can have dinner over here! How about you make it, Vale? You're a great cook!"
Quinn wasn't honestly sure he was a great cook, but he assumed so.
"I'll bring dessert! Tonight! We'll be here!"
Quinn grinned happily, and pulled Vale into another hug. He didn't get off of the couch yet, though.
"I don't really want to leave, but I do have to go grocery shopping. Sorry."

"I understand. Grocery shopping ee's very ee'mportant." He nodded, utterly serious. Grocery shopping took skills - it had to be planned, coordinated. You had to get in, get out, and get all the deals as fast as possible. You had to avoid the waves of mothers (they came pretty regularly, so you had a short time window), and sometimes you had to be careful not to trip over the children. If there was a spill in one aisle, you had to think fast to detour - you had to know the layout of the store by heart.
So yes, he knew what Quinn meant.
He quickly snaked his arms around him for one last hug (totally a master at this, by now), grudgingly letting go and leaving Quinn with a kiss on the forehead.
"You better go," he urged with a serious frown. "Before the old folks from the retirement home get dropped off for their shopping. Otherwise you v'ill never get out of line."
He was still serious.
"I v'ill have dinner ready, so come over v'henever," he added. Puffing up just a little bit more. He was a great cook, after all. A damn great cook. And a defeater of crocodiles!

Quinn pushed himself off of the couch and ruffled Sydni's hair. "Alright, we'll be here later! See you!" Quinn left the house, shut the door behind him, and hummed as he walked across the street, still grinning. Then he paused.
This was serious.
He was introducing his mother to... his boyfriend?
He just had to make sure she was sane enough to come, and eat. She would probably be happy to have some real food for once, right?
Quinn swallowed, and stepped inside to get some money for shopping.
And to invite his mom to his...boyfriend's...house.

If he'd known he was staring at the door Quinn had left through with such a stupidly happy look on his face, he would've stopped immediately.
As it was, he was grinning like a loon. He felt just as high as he did when rushing on adrenaline. He and Quinn had spent time together without everything going wrong. It was amazing, it was kisses and hugs, it was-
It was-
It was a parent coming over for dinner.
Realization quickly settled in. Quinn's mother was coming over for dinner. Quinn's mother - the parent of the person he was currently dating. It was dating, right? That's what this was, right?
The stupid smile quickly turned to a look of horror.
He had to start cooking! Now! It had to be perfect - he had to impress her!
Sydni laughed again when her brother suddenly leapt off the couch, only to fall flat on his face at the reminder of his broken leg.
This was going to be a long night.
