For once the weyr seemed almost deadly silent, only the natural sounds of the night carried on the air about bowl. Heard beast shifted in their night stalls and the watch dragon rustled his wings. Wild Night wherries occasionally sounded their calls from the forest beyond but even these noises were subdued by the heavy blanket of approaching midnight.
Too bad it wasn’t the same inside. Someone was snoring, and not quietly. Another mumbled in their sleep something about a glowing boat and Ren stared at the ceiling of the candidates brackets unable to sleep a wink. The sounds had invaded his head and invaded his dreams, and although the bed was probably better than the simple cot of his home he could not adjust himself to a comfortable position amongst the folds of the furs. He tried pulling them over his head and stuffing his ears but it didn’t really work either and his mind and imagination just filled in the blanks that were left to his senses. He sighed and pulled them down again because it was stiflingly hot anyway.
He knew there would be chores in the day coming and that his body would greatly appreciate the rest but in these strange surroundings and with the images of his day of dragons and peeking at eggs were still fresh in his mind there was no way in all pern he was getting to sleep. It would be better to resign himself to that fact…Maybe a walk would help.
Slowly, with much care not to wake his fellow candidates he clambered down from his bunk, silent feet on the cold stone floor made no sound and he picked up his boats instead of dawning them, slipping on a jacket as well to go over his night things. And that makes it sound much easier than it was, because it was pitch black almost and he didn’t have the nerve to light a candle a gather a glow basket while still inside the brackets so he had to feel his way to his possessions inch by careful inch.
But once he had the leathers in hand he could proceed with sneaking out, still in the dark and trying to judge from memory where he was going, luckily the path between the bunks were straight and uncomplicated, even if he did stub his toe several times in the dark and have to bite back sounds of pain and mild curses it was worth it when he got out to the main tunnel.
First thing he did was lean down to nurse his injured toes before wiggling them into the strong boats. He then gathered a basket of glows from a nearby bracket and started walking, from what he knew this whole place was an absolute maze so he was careful to count the turns he made as he tried to find his way to the main weyr bowl, he’d lie out on the grass for a while and maybe the exposure to the open sea air would help bring on sleep.

Kiriwar was not sure what was keeping him up that night. He sighed and twisted in his bunk, feeling hot and overwhelmed, stifled in the warmth that rose from the volcano below them. The other candidates seemed to be doing just fine – he was intrigued to find out what else there was to the one who was mumbling about glowing boats, but there was another movement and sound that was intriguing him. He blinked slowly, before moving to light his candle again, the dim glow bringing a touch of light to his alcove so he could peer out carefully to see who was moving about. There seemed to be someone wandering away down the hall, fumbling in the dark – he could barely see them. It was just a guess that there was even someone there, but he could almost hear the sound of footsteps.
Curious as ever, the Vintner decided to gather up his own things, pulling on his boots and nearly falling out of his alcove, quickly blowing out the candle before he left. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust, but once he reached the lit area, he gathered up a basket of glows, sighing softly and trying to figure out what direction the other had gone in. Whoever it was, they moved rather quickly… He stepped forward again, taking a guess, making his way out towards the Bowl, humming softly as he went. Perhaps going outdoors would do him some good – fresh air always helped him to sleep. He could also go n** a bit of a wine…

Silently as possible Ren moved along the corridors, he had natural stealth almost build in luckily and it was quite easy for him to mould himself against the wall when he heard footsteps or saw a light flash, ducking into an alcove or crease in the rock. But he didn't trust these tunnels and didn't know what might be around the next corner so although he was cautious he also moved quickly holding up the glow basket before him to stop him falling completely flat on his face was a balanced risk as the light could also easily give him away.
He was so caught up in what might be a head that he forgot what could be coming up behind, seriously rookie mistake that he would scold himself for later for the consequences of it would soon be made extremely clear to him. He felt a cool breeze blow onto his face and took his hair up tangling it further than he already had with his tossing and turning in the night. He breathed it in deep and picked up speed. So close to his goal bringing pride and elation to swell his chest.
But as he rounded the corner and the weyr bowl opened up before him he was flashed with a light, someone holding a large basket of glows coming across the bowl, for a moment Ren froze thinking that whoever held it would spot him instantly, his heart beating rampant in his chest as he realized with relief that the man that held the basket was deep in conversation with a companion and neither had looked up to see him frozen in the entrance.
Not thinking to squander his rare stroke of luck he dived back into the caves only to almost run over someone else. He stifled a started yelp and took in the figure before him, another boy, whats more he had on the marks of a candidate and was still young. Taking his chances and hoping the other would forgive him for the rough treatment he pushed him back into a fissure that ran down the side of the tunnel a flits length to the left. Taking both glow baskets he held them to his chest to block there light with his own body. His free hand pressed against the other boys chest to keep him pressed into the hiding place praying that he would stay put and wouldn't call out. The thought of gaining a punishment on his first day making him pasty with apprehension his breathing fast and his heat thrashing with the force of dragon wing against his ribs.
Next thing he knew he could hear the conversation getting nearer, closer. He just had to pray they choose the other tunnel to wonder down and did not come across them hiding like fugitives in a crease in the wall. But it seemed his luck would hold, the voices turned away. Drifting back to them fainter and fainter until they were completely gone. Ren closed his eyes and pulled back almost collapsing in his relief.
Hazel eyes now flowed back to Kiriwar and his cheeks flashed the most brilliant red...oh he had almost forgotten he wasn't out of the woods yet. Wherry teeth! this had been a bad idea from the start he should have just stayed in bed. "ugh..." he opened his mouth to explain but words failed him in that initial attempt and when he gathered all his courage and tried again all that he managed was a merger apology "sorry for pushing you."

Kiriwar watched the other through the glow he was carrying, curious -- he was really too nosy for his own good, and that would get him in trouble sometime he was sure of it. Distantly, there were the sounds of the bowl, sounds that they had nearly reached the place they were apparently both trying to go. But the next few moments happened in a flash, and he found himself bumped into, then shoved into a dark fissure to apparently wait, his glowbasket seized and another boy's hand planted firmly on his chest to keep him in place.
He knew better than to make a sound, to protest even with a sigh of his breath, keeping perfectly still and listening intently for the others passing by, hoping that -- they were leaving. When the voices faded, he sighed quietly, before looking down at the other boy with a boyish grin, shrugging slightly. "It's all right. I hadn't seen them coming, and I would've been at punishment for sure if you hadn't knocked me back... I'm Kiriwar."

Only felt relief that he was safe, that he hadn’t been caught and that the other candidates had kept quite and didn’t seem the least bit angry, if anything he seemed grateful. Still blushing brightly in the dim light he handed the older boy back his glow basket. Feeling the smallest bit of pride that he seemed to have saved them both. “Well its nice to meet you.” He told him, his voice still held to a hushed level to avoid detection. “My name is Nehren,” He told him turning slightly and holding his glow basket out down the tunnel.
It was quiet and dark. Good. He looked back at the other boy and motioned him forward. “I was going to go for a walk in the weyr…I couldn’t really sleep with all that snoring. Would you like to join me.” He asked hopefully. He wasn’t stupid and had a feeling the other was following him anyway but he wasn’t going to question on it. In fact he was rather glad that he had, if he agreed then he would have some small company on the other wise lonely walk in the dark and that might well be a blessing. Despite his original plan it might do him good to know at least one other person in the weyr apart from Vesyes and L’thor.
