Wow...So far I've seen a pretty good variety of thoughts concerning Gendo.
Pre-EoE, I tend to disagree with the thought of Gendo being selfish...Zealous would seem to be a better word to describe him. It is true that he does seem to use people, but I think an important question to ask is do the people he uses want to be used or are they simply obeying orders that have placed them under Gendo's authority? Do they trust his leadership or have faith in him?
Now...EoE changes things a bit...(due to its twisted version of the original ending and story) Here, I see Gendo as utterly insane...and it would be a fair assumption to say he is selfish. (of course...just about all the characters were twisted beyond recognition in EoE save MAYBE Asuka...) So I would agree with most of you about Gendo when it pretains to the EoE movie...but probably not when it pretains to the original series.
