"Um....Kaskel?"

Weylin's voice preceded him into the creche, and he entered hesitantly, tugging a child of maybe four turns by the hand and looking around somewhat sheepishly. The little boy was staring sullenly at the ground, and Weylin let go of him as soon as they were no longer in the corridor. The boy glared at him and made as if to kick him, but at a warning look from Weylin, he huffed and stomped off, shoulders hunched and an ugly scowl on his face. Weylin sighed and shook his head, looking carefully around the group of weybrats. There was one in particular he was looking for...and he didn't see her.

"Kas?" he said again, approaching his friend and coworker slowly, still counting heads to make sure he wasn't just missing the object of his search. "Um...by any chance, did Leela come back here?" he asked quietly. "Because I left her alone to chase down that little brat when he made a break for it on our way back from the kitchens," he let off to point at the small boy, who stuck his tongue out at him and then turned his back, "and when I came back, she was gone. We weren't that far away from here, so I thought maybe she'd have wandered down on her own." His expression suggested that while this was his greatest hope, he wasn't particularly expecting it.

If Leela were here, she'd have gone to scold her brother; the seven-turn-old girl was very snotty when it came to that child, but it still wasn't like her to wander off. And Weylin was not particularly thrilled with the idea that he might have accidentally lost a charge. He never lost children.

With an upside-down toddler held by the waist in one arm and a clingy little boy hanging from the other, Kaskel was not exactly in a position to “drop everything” and go on a quest to find missing little girls. He didn’t seem too worried, though. He eyed his friend with an even expression and expertly turned the toddler upright with only the use of the one arm. The kid laughed, wanting to do it all over again.

“Do you mean to say you lost Leela?” He tsk-tsked the younger man and shook his head, still paying more attention to the children he was currently in charge of than the problem at hand. “She’ll be fine,” he said, turning away at the squawk of a kid that had tripped.

It was horrible of him to behave as if such a thing didn’t matter, but the truth was that Weylin obviously didn’t have eyes in the back of his head. It was only a matter of time before a girlish giggle would tell his ears that all was well.

"I didn't lose her; she lost herself," Weylin retorted, sticking his tongue out at Kaskel as soon as he turned his back. Shaking his head and sighing, he hefted the basket of sweet rolls he had appropriated from the kitchens and thunked it down on a nearby table, pulling the cloth off it and stepping back as eager children crowded it. Watching to make sure nobody hogged all the treat, he turned back to Kaskel as soon as the rolls had been properly dished out.

"So you gonna be okay while I go look for her?" he asked, giving Kas an ironic smile as he spoke. Asking Kaskel if he would be able to cope with the small children was more or less the same as asking a dragon if it was going to be all right flying. But it was propriety to ask nonetheless, and he ran a hand through his hair, absentmindedly separating two children squabbling over a roll as he watched the corridor outside expectantly. If Leela didn't show up before Kaskel had finished answering, he really ought to go find her. Either she'd get in trouble with someone, or he'd get in trouble for letting her wander off.

It wasn't a particularly fun outcome either way.

Kaskel put down the two kids he’d been hauling to let them have a go at the sweet rolls. He tied his hair back into two pigtails in the time it took him to reach the table, where he helped himself to a roll, too. He immediately stuffed one end into his mouth and held it there in order to free his hands to snatch a greedy boy who had taken too many. “Juft tum amoum,” he said to his friend around the roll. “Fee’v mit meehime yoom.”

He grinned, still holding the treat between his teeth. If Weylin could interpret that mess, then he'd be able to understand any kid who spoke with his mouth full. And that, in their line of work, was a very useful skill.

Weylin had been working with small children far too long for him to not know what it was that Kaskel had just said to him. He harrumphed at the other boy, not even bothering to smile at the ridiculous way he wore his hair (he suppressed a pang of jealousy that Kaskel could manage to wear his hair long without being mistaken for a girl). Now he had just managed to make himself look dumb. Humph.

"Well, good." He said grumpily, crossing his arms over his chest and putting on his best no-nonsense face before he turned to Leela. The girl blinked and took a step back, looking alarmed, but Weylin sighed and shook his head. Handing her two sweet rolls, he boxed her ears so gently it couldn't even be considered a real reprimand and sent her off to share the snack with her little brother. "And don't go wandering off!" he said sharply before turning back to Kaskel.

"I never want any of my own ever," he said decisively, squawking as he was divebombed from behind by a child of maybe five turns, who linked arms around Weylin's throat and squealed with glee as Weylin spun in a tight circle in an attempt to grab her. "Why did you let it stand on the table, Kaskel!" he yowled, grabbing a leg and pulling the child around so he could get a good look at her. The girl laughed brightly at him and let go of Weylin's neck as he turned her upside down and bounced her near the floor. After a moment, he set her down, shooed her off, and put his hands on his hips to deter the speculative young boy who was obviously contemplating the same act.

"I'd suggest against it, mister," he said in his harshest possible voice, and then sighed and picked the child up.

Weylin’s antics with the little girl who’d jumped from the table were part of the reason why Kaskel liked working with him so much. The entertainment was always welcome, especially on slow days. Not only that, he clearly had a way with kids, whether he claimed to like them or not.

Chuckling, Kaskel bent to lift the girl who’d just caused all the ruckus. “Don’t climb on the table,” he told her, face straight and finger wagging back and forth in front of her nose. “You’ll get hurt, and then I’ll be very sad.” He grinned as the little one nodded emphatically in reply. She pointed at the floor, signaling her desire to get down, and Kaskel obliged.

After finishing off their treats, the two children who’d been hanging on him before had come back, along with a couple of others, to grab and cling to him with sticky fingers. It wasn’t the most pleasant experience, but he took it all in stride, leading the whole gaggle over to the basin of water for a good hand-washing. “It’s too bad you don’t want any kids,” he called over his shoulder to Weylin. “You’d make a wonderful wife.”

Weylin watched Kaskel and the child with vague amusement, resting his free hand on his hip and absently bouncing the little child until he started squirming to be put down. Then he released the child and shooed him over to the basin with the rest of the flock. Ushering the stragglers up after Kaskel's group had finished and moved out of the way, he lifted one of the smaller girls so she could reach and made certain nobody splashed anybody else. "You have all the manners of a wher, Kas," he said grumpily, grabbing one of the older children by his collar before he could dunk one of his friends face-first into the basin. "Is that what we do?" he asked softly, and when the boy shook his head, Weylin rolled his eyes and let go of him.

"All right, you bunch of wherries," he said lightly to a group of the older boys, "move along. Little boys who make trouble don't Impress bronzes. And little girls who pull hair don't Impress golds," he remarked, not even looking over his shoulder at the child, who stopped with her hand midway to her friend's braids and clasped her hands behind her back immediately.

Shaking his head, Weylin returned to the sweet roll basket and snatched up the remaining roll. He stuffed it into his mouth and sat on the table beside the basket, waiting for the next disaster to break out.

Kaskel listened to his friend’s gentle threats, smiling faintly. He’d been told the same when he was small—that bad little boys and girls didn’t Impress the bronzes and golds. Fortunately, most kids never realized that if that were actually true, then that would mean the Weyr was completely filled to the brim with bad people. He had to admit, though, it was a good way to motivate kids to behave. He couldn’t think of anyone who would turn down the chance for a high-ranking dragon, himself included.

Things seemed fairly contained for the moment, as far as the kids went, so Kaskel took the opportunity to relax, sitting down next to his fellow crèche worker. It wasn’t long before a little one was clamoring to get on his lap, so he leaned forward to help her up, then sat back and put his arm around Weylin’s shoulders. It was a merely comradely gesture, and Kaskel was completely unaware of the trio’s oddly familial appearance.

It didn't particularly faze Weylin that his threats were completely untrue; they worked even so. It had worked on him, it had probably worked on everyone who had grown up in the weyr, and it would probably always work. So he would continue using them. Keeping an eye on the hair-puller until he was certain she wouldn't try something sneaky while his back was turned. Shaking his head and swallowing the last bite of sweet roll, he barely glanced at Kaskel when he sat down.

The way in which they were sitting flickered briefly across Weylin's mind as somewhat awkward, but he dismissed it soon enough; it was Kaskel. It wasn't like Kas didn't know he was a guy. And besides, Kas was one for women. Period. So Weylin simply smiled at the little girl, patted her on the head, and watched the children. A few of them had gotten into some sort of game and Weylin watched for a few minutes before he realized they were playing make-believe as dragonriders. Laughing a little bit, he shook his head and glanced at Kaskel.

"The other clutch on the Sands is bound to hatch any day now," he said slowly, considering his words thoughtfully even as he spoke them. "Ready to Stand again?"

Watching the children who were playing dragonriders, Kaskel had fallen into a slight daze with dreamy thoughts of his own children in their place. He snapped back to reality quickly at the sound of Weylin’s voice, nodding in agreement over the fast-approaching Hatching. “More than ready. I’m a patient man, but all this waiting and wondering is enough to drive anyone crazy.”

"Honestly? Part of me just wants it to be over with," Weylin admitted, leaning back and staring at the ceiling thoughtfully. "There's so much tension." He shuddered slightly and then straightened up again, watching the children to make sure nobody was going to start a game that would get anyone in trouble. It was always like that before the Hatchings, though. Nervous Candidates making everyone else edgy, the energy eventually feeding into the dragons until the whole Weyr (figuratively) hummed with it.

But it was exhilarating too, in a way. And Weylin wouldn't change it for the world. "Especially since the other clutch has been done for so long," he added suddenly. "It's bound to end any time now. And then...I don't know." He shrugged. "There's talk floating around of Riders leaving." He shrugged again. It wasn't his business, and he honestly had no idea whether those rumours would be true or not.

The rumors of riders leaving… if either of the two boys Impressed, would they also abandon the crowded Weyr? He tried to picture himself packing up and moving out, leaving his crèchelings and close friends behind. The thought didn’t appeal to him, but he supposed he could do it, should a Weyrwoman or Weyrleader ask it of him. After all, it wasn’t as if there’d be no kids at a new Weyr.

But that was getting ahead of himself. Right now, Kaskel’s future was uncertain. He didn’t like that, preferring to have a measure of control, but he was the one who made the choice to Stand, and he would deal with it.

“Eh, if the rumors are true, at least we’ll have a little more elbow room.” To illustrate his point, Kaskel yawned lightly and stretched, purposely crowding Weylin in the process.

"Ack! Kas!" Weylin scowled, shoving his friend back over when Kaskel crowded him. He was too close to the edge of the table to be comfortable getting shoved every-which-way. He had fallen off things courtesy of Kaskel more than once before, and he had no desire to repeat it. "Geroff me," he grumbled, not even bothering to try and sound grumpy. Kaskel was Kaskel, and Weylin had long since learned to put up with him. "You're right though, about the elbow room. I can't imagine the Riders like sharing their space. Imagine some of our Greenriders living together!"

Grumpy old F'sey and snippy C'ren came to mind, and picturing the two of them together, Weylin couldn't help but smile and shake his head. If those men were ever forced into proximity, they'd either immediately become fast friends, or the Weyr would crumble straight down around them. Weylin wasn't sure which was more plausible. "Oh, that would be great fun," he said wryly.

"So, Kas. Do you have your colour choices made for the eggs yet?" he asked, leaning against Kas in a way that totally failed to move the larger man in any way, shape or form. Weylin didn't publicly play guess-the-colour, but he didn't mind a bit of speculation in private.
