Notos had been recruited as a candidate just recently. He had seen -- and heard that there were other boys that were recruited by the search just like him. He had yet to see any of them though, but that was partially due to the fact that he had woken up earlier than most of them, and had taken to wandering the weyr. He had been careful not to trespass where he shouldn't, where candidates were not yet allowed. But that hadn't limited his wandering any, since the weyr was already so large.

He had already spotted several dragons, that were stationed at Ista Weyr. That in itself was amazing, to see dragonriders so close. But he tilted his head, with an unflattering thought. The dragonriders themselves .. didn't seem much different, even with dragons.

Everyone sorta expected something different, when one became a dragon rider. But if you thought about it, becoming one didn't really change your personality or who you were. Your status and rank would change, but those were materialistic things. Maybe it would help to question some of the riders in question, but Notos disregarded that notion without a second thought.

"Lets see.. right." Notos decided, as he was met with a fork in his road. He had an option for two hallways, and since he decidedly knew what the left path was, the only option was to take the right. After all, wandering was for exploring the unknown.

Early to bed, early to rise was the saying, and he'd been used to getting up at the crack of dawn in order to tend to the beasts in his care. The routine habit hadn't worn off on him yet, despite the fact that his services were no longer required to drive the herds here to feed dragons. Shards, dragons! He'd never imagined in his wildest dreams that he'd ever get to lay eyes on the magnificent animals--let alone be brought here as a candidate! The tall, lanky man supposed it all wouldn't matter in the end... not if he kept getting himself lost in the corridors of the Weyr. Sighing slightly under his breath, he at least had a cup of hot klah in his hands to preoccupy himself as he soundlessly slipped through the glow-lit hallways.

As he rounded the corner, the wiry lad blinked with surprise to realize there was someone standing at what looked like a diverging path, a slight tilt of his head enough to spill long hair in front of his face. A hand rubbing silently at his jaw, Jiriar decided it couldn't hurt to ask directions. The only problem was figuring out where he wanted to go!

"Oy," He called lightly to not startle the other, a friendly, if lazy grin pulling at one corner of his mouth. "First time I've seen anyone 'round here, especially this early. You wouldn't happen to be lost too, would you?" Well, it'd make things interesting if that was the case, provided the that man was willing to be a little vocal with him.

He winced inwardly, hearing the uncouth word, 'lost'. "Lost isn't the word I'd like to call it." Notos called out, to reply to the other person who spoke. He hadn't expected another visitor, but he welcomed it all the same. After all, wandering around by yourself tended to become a boring occupation after a while.

"I'd like to think there is a difference in purposely going to where you don't know, rather than the mindless wandering where you can't find your away back." Yeah. He wasn't lost. Really. One hand rubbed at the back of his head, wondering if these circumstances were really the best to meet someone else.

He turned around to the mysterious voice, returning the friendly grin with one of his own. He was almost surprised to see a male, only a couple of turns older than him. ".. I'm going to surmise, that you don't know your way around this place either. Are you new too?" He tilted his head, his golden eyes gleaming with a sparkle. This was also the first time he had seen someone else, and it was a refreshing change than just the dragon riders. Not that they weren't interesting, but tjey were always too busy for passing conversation.

"Oh-ho!" Jiriar replied good-naturedly, amused with the way the boy was phrasing things. "I'm not clever enough to justify it like that, since I know I will be lost whenever I finally start making my way back." He was being honest! His grin widened a little as the man turned to face him, noting he looked older than he sounded. Still, the other had a sort of charisma to him that felt almost as laid back and easy-going as his own.

"You'd be right. I am." Jiriar chuckled, interest perking slightly. "I assume, then, that you're another candidate?" Sounded like the most likely explanation for someone being new in a Weyr, but what did he know? "Shards, this place is huge. I don't really know how they expect a man who sleeps with herdbeasts to find his way around!" His eyes lidded with lazy amusement, not at all abashed to poke fun at himself. "Name's Jiriar."

His calloused hand extended itself to the other lad, pleased with his early-morning discovery. "Glad to meet you--s'a little nerve-wracking to try and get used to all of this."

"It sounds so much better though." Notos commented heartily. But he appreciated the other man's honesty and humor. They were facing each other though, allowing both of them to finally see what type of person they were talking to. Notos noted that the man looked skinner than he sounded, but he seemed healthy otherwise. They had the same sort of aura though .. Notos could see that they would get along wonderfully.

At the assumption, his eyes lit up, realizing that the person in front of him was also a candidate. "You would be right on the mark." He admitted, although he wasn't quite used to the word. It was hard for him, and most likely for the other male, to believe that they were actually in a weyr.

As he listened further, he was a bit surprised. There really was a variety in their candidates .. smiths and beastcrafters already included. "Herdbeasts, huh. I admire you." Notos grinned, albeit a bit sheepishly. "I prefer the machines myself. They're a lot less easier to handle."

A hand reached out in return, to shake Jiriar's with a firm shake. "Notos." His tone was good natured, pleased to see someone of his caliber. "Pleasure to meet you too. And that's difficult," He paused to stare at their surroundings with a half smile, "This isn't the half of it. I think it'll be chaotic when the hatching actually comes, and everyone is here." Everyone meaning, well the bronzes, as well as the other riders. Notos had never heard of it himself, but the events of a hatching reached far and wide. And his imagination helped. An ironic smile touched his lips, until he brushed it away.

"I s'pose that it isn't very good to start scaring people away, so I'll try to refrain myself." He would try, but he guaranteed nothing, he implied cheerfully.

"If you're wise or handsome enough to pull it off, then by all means, I'd agree with you." An amused note flickered through his throat, a shrug of his lean shoulders rising and falling. "People seem to gloss things over for you then." From what he'd observed, anyway. He found himself relaxing at the light hearted responses, even chuckling a little under his breath. Pegged it then, had he? Well, good, that'd make things a little easier here if he could at least recognize a friendly face out on the scorching sands. Maybe someone to cry if one of the little beasties gutted him like a fish, now that he was thinking about it.

A cool look of approval momentarily stifled his cheerful features at the compliment, scratching his cheek as an almost abashed grin replaced the first. "Too kind. They aren't that difficult once you get to know 'em... and machines, eh? What's your craft? I'd probably lop my fingers off, if that's any consolation." He'd never really handled machines in his life.

Notos. He stored it in the back of his mind for a moment, liking the way it rolled off his tongue. "Strange to think about, eh? And you do have a good point... Well, guess it's either trampled by people, or raging dragonets!" It probably wasn't helpful that a wide grin spread across his face at the thought. A brow was quirked at the man, his grin widening if possible before the man was snickering under his breath. "No, but if it knocks out the competition, I don't see what's the harm in trying."

He rocked a little on his feet before musing, "Heard we also actually get to touch the eggs at some point... Another ceremony of sorts. Can't imagine what good it'll do, but oy, I'm not complainin'."

.. Notos didn't think anything of his brains or looks, but hey! It didn't hurt to try.

A snort accompanied the idea that animals weren't complex. Personally, machines weren't difficult. They had a set path, whereas the wherry wanted this... or something other. But Jiriar's words amused him to no end. Heh. Go figure, that the opposite ends of each craft would be bad at it. But that was why they were at their respective ends, after all. "Smithcraft." He answered casually.

The other male was just as blunt, Notos feeling more relaxed now that he knew he didn't have to guard anything around him. "But the competition makes it half the fun. What could possibly ease my boredom if half the people are gone before I could do anything possibly meaningful?"

Encouraging the other to continue walking on, with the respective wave of his hand. His eyebrow raised, as he heard the passing rumor. "I heard that too. Sounds fun, even if we're just touching shells for the moment." Jiriar was right though, they certainly wouldn't be complaining given an opportunity like that. "If we die on the hatching grounds when it actually hatches, I'm sure it'll defeat whatever point that they were trying to get across though." He sighed, a reluctant sigh. Death being mauled by a baby dragon didn't sound promising, after all.

Oh, well now he had to boggle a little. Smithcraft? He couldn't even imagine tinkering with things for that long, much less stay interested. He was a simple man, or so he liked to think! "Little bit of a difference in what we do, I see." A grin tugged itself at his face before he meant it to, and he was shaking his head slowly with admiration. "What sort? Heard there's all kinds, could never really wrap my head 'round it..."

"Oy, I guess that's a good point. Impress a dragon, or become a legend... Both, if you're lucky." His lips pursed for a moment before he caught the wave and stretched his long legs to situate himself by the other's side, keeping enough space between them so they'd both be comfortable while they conversed.

He nodded slowly at Notos' words, unable to stifle the grin that flickered across his face at that last bit. "It's dramatic enough that you'd definitely be remembered though, eh? Maybe not in the way you want, but hey." He chuckled, stretching his arms behind his head for a moment with a soft sound. "I mean, who all can really say they've touched a dragon egg? I'm used to beasts 'n all... but you can't really call them beasts." Not with dragons being as intelligent as they were! He, of course, had heard the rumors and stories of the wonderful bond, but it was a tricky thing to imagine without experiencing it first hand. "...You picky about what type you get? You know, if you do manage to Impress."

"We do too many things to count, actually." Notos hid a grin, remembering the time when he couldn't wrap his head around the concept either. "Personally, I like and specialize in machinery. Those little wires, and metal pieces you find in your music box." The word, simply, was relative to each person. After all, Notos viewed animals as complicated!

"You do all sorts of animals, or just the specific wherry?" Seriously, Notos didn't understand animals. But then again, he never did well with things that responded to him unexpectedly. Or maybe wasn't patient. Probably both. A low whistle accompanied the sentence, seriously admiring the older boy.

He hesitated in his tracks, at the abrupt question. Or maybe not so abrupt, it was inevitable according to their direction of their conversation.

He paused, thinking about it. "I suppose that any good, unselfish person would say impressing a dragon is enough.." Notos started, a bit envious of somebody who could say that, "But really, the bronzes amaze me the most." Notos ducked beneath one of the smaller entrances of the weyr, not really sure where he was walking. But anywhere was better than nothing. And they were both lost in the first place.

"Every color has it's perks though, How about you?" Notos returned the question, with an inquisitive smile of his own.

A bunch of titchy little bits and pieces--all of which were undoubtedly fragile and impossibly easy to lose. Jiriar could only shake his head a little, both marveling and wondering how anyone could be intrigued by such a thing. Everyone had their niche, he knew, but he lacked the drive to focus on a project like that for hours, maybe even days!

"Herdbeasts, wherries," He nodded a little, ticking them off in his head. "Had a few runnerbeasts, but those were just to help us get around 'n the like, not for any hungry dragons." The whistle made him lid his eyes and chuckle a little, not going to pretend he wasn't flattered. "Psh, stop that--you're givin' me a big head."

Notos unexpectedly stopped, made his eyes slide curiously to their corners before he fully turned to glance at him. "I'd say you'd be right." He nodded thoughtfully. The bronze dragons... "So big and noble, eh?" The man chuckled, sweeping a hand through his hair before he stepped after the other. "Honestly, I haven't thought about it much. Guess I'll be surprised to Impress at all, s'the thing. Anything that could hold me and not die in mid flight sounds pretty good." Ever the optimist, but he was partially serious on that note. Falling to one's death did not sound even remotely enjoyable.

"I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that you're not particularly picky?" A grin was offered with the sentence, stating the obvious. It sounded nice, to be able to be so free that way.

He listened further to the simple yet important request of what Jiriar wished to impress. "But when put that way.." He stroked his chin thoughtfully, envisioning a painful, painful death that involved dropping off a dragon in mid flight. Falleing high in mid-air, your body would probably be pummeled by the forces of calculations of gravity, speed, height, and so many other factors. A mock shudder ran through his body, Notos tilting his head back to observe the ceiling. "Shards, that was a horrible image." One eye narrowed, wincing in reaction.

"Offsetting that fact since death is never an enjoyable prospect.." Notos seemed to ponder what they could both to.. "Shall we make our goal, finding our way back to the kitchen? A cup of hot klah would sound refreshing at the moment."
