Jessan whistled while he worked. Literally. Forget the fact that he was charged with helping chop up meat for the young dragonets or clean up wherries for the night's dinner. It was a life of hard work but one that made him appreciate being alive. Things could be a lot worse. He could be holdless, he could have lost members of his family, and hundreds of other terrible fates. His clear blue eyes almost twinkled and he had his trademark grin on his face as he entered the lower Caverns. Following the path he knew so well, Jessan soon arrived in the kitchens.
"Hello there? Anyone here to take some yummy, bloody pieces for tonight's meal?" He said this in a good tone; it lightened things up and everyone always seemed more pleasant when you treated even the lowest job like it was the most important. Looking around, he noticed a tall girl...maybe his height, in fact, looking at him. Giving a wave with his free hand, Jessan headed towards her. "Are you waiting for this?"

Davril has been assigned to the kitchens for the day, she didn't mind honestly. Besides mending clothes the kitchens was her second favourite assignment. She was standing at a counter chopping greens for a salad while she hummed to herself. It was a melody her mother used to sing while she worked and Davril had picked up the habit. Her humming was cut off when she heard a male's voice. Blinking she glanced up surprised, what was- oh, the meat. She stared at the older boy with wide doe-eyes her brain frozen. The only thought she managed to process was that he was at her eye level, which meant they were nearly the same height.
Once her brain finally thawed she nodded, and lifted her hand pushing her hair back behind her ear. "Y-yeah, I was." She glanced around the kitchens looking for anyone who might be free to take the meat, but to her disappointment it seemed everyone else was otherwise occupied. Bringing her gaze back to the other teen she couldn't help but catch herself staring again. He was handsome, with high cheek bones and pretty blue eyes. She hadn't met many of the people who lived in the Weyr having gotten sick right after she arrived, that was also the reason she and her twin Davian had missed the first Hatching.
She felt stupid just standing there and staring at him, but she honestly didn't know what else to say. When she opened her mouth around boys, especially cute boys, she tended to make a fool of herself. So, instead of speaking she just scuffed her foot against the ground, forgetting that he probably wanted her to take the meat from him.

Jessan managed not to sigh or laugh at the girl. He happened to be blessed with fairly good looks. That is to say, he wouldn't make the canines howl. Sometimes the younger girls went a little red but this was the first time (that he could recall) that he had made someone tongue tied. Moving closer to her, he saw a preview of what was for lunch. Greens. Bleh. He was much more of a tubers and meat man himself. "How about you take this pail or tell me where the cold freezer is? That way the meat doesn't go bad?"
All around them, the kitchen bustled. There was always something to clean or bake. Something or someone that to be fed. He enjoyed the constant movement and activity. He moved the bucket a little closer to her, making sure that it didn't spill. "So, which way?"

"Oh, oh!" When he mentioned the pail she blinked rapidly realizing that she had just been standing there dumbly. When he moved closer to her she stepped back glancing around. "Right, cold freezer." Blushing she turned and headed towards the back of the kitchen where the freezer was. She raked her fingers through her hair while she chewed on her lower lip.
She stole a glance back at him as they reached the freezer, "It's here," Reaching out she took the pail from him, her fingers brushing against his as she did so. She glanced away and turned to the freezer, faced with a dilemma. Having not opened the freezer before she took the pail with both hands she was now stuck. "Shards." She muttered to herself and attempted to balance the pail on her hip and get the freezer open, without spilling anything.

This girl was really acting silly. He tried not to laugh. Instead, he gently grabbed her shoulders and moved her back so that she wouldn't drop the pail. Jessan was positive the kitchen staff would not be happy about blood and wasted meat all over the floor. Moving her to the side a little, he grabbed the cold freezer handle and opened it up. Immediately, a shot of cold air hit them both.
"There. No need to try to do it all at once, when you have me here to help you." He smiled and took the pail from her. Heaving the heavy bucket onto his shoulders, Jessan moved towards the back to store the food stuffs. He doubt it would be there long with hungry weyrlings and candidates all about... Speaking of candidates...
"I didn't see you at the last Hatching. Are you from Ista or did you just arrive recently?"

Davril nearly jumped when the other Candidate moved her out of the way but she managed to keep her cool. She glanced over at him, confused for a second at what he was doing. She needed to put the pail in th- oh. He was going to open the freezer, that made so much more sense. She shook her head slightly, pail still balanced on a hip, feeling stupid. She should have just let him open the freezer in the first place.
At his words she glanced at him and smiled just slightly. "Thanks." She let him take the pail of meat, rubbing her arms as a shiver overtook her, the cold air from the freezer billowing around her. She watched as he moved to the back of the freezer, ready to point out where it needed to go if he didn't know. Catching his question she took a small step forwards before replying. "I'm from Ista Hold, I arrived before the last Hatching but I got sick and my brother had to take care of me so we both missed it."

"Ista, huh? I've been there once or twice. Come from a family of herders, so kinda on the move between summer and winter camps." Jessan came out of the freezer, he closed the door behind him. His tanned skin was covered in goosebumps. Rubbing his arms, he stepped back and towards the warmth.
"Sick? Well, I am glad to see you are all better. Certainly look healthy enough. Brother, huh? I gotta a couple of those and a sister too. Cousins, aunts, uncles..." Jessan realized he was starting to ramble a bit. Hmm... He was in the kitchens and there was always food to be had.
"Can you catch a cup of fruit juice or do you have to get back to work?"

Davril nodded as he mentioned he'd been to Ista, she looked closer at him wondering if she'd recognize him. Try as she might she couldn't place his face and finally she surmised that she must have never seen him, Ista Hold was a decent size after all. As he stepped out of the freezer she took a step back giving him room to move not wanting to get in the way. She was glad the freezer was finally closed, she wanted to warm up.
Following him away from the cold freezer she nodded. "Aye, it was a nasty cough, but it's gone now." She rubbed her arms a bit, trying to get the blood flowing again. "Yeah, we're twins, his name's Davian. I have a younger brother and sister too," Speaking of her family made her a bit home sick but she tried to ignore it. She had a once in a lifetime opportunity to have the chance to Impress a dragon.
Hearing his offer she went doe-eyed again, slightly surprised. It took her a couple moments to come up with an answer and she blinked nodding slightly. "I guess I could have a quick drink." She smiled slightly, and then realized that her manner's had completely slipped her mind. "Oh, I'm Davril, from Ista Hold....but you already knew that part." She blushed, running her fingers through her hair nervously.

Laughing, Jessan led her through the kitchens and to the dining tables. There always seemed to be bread, fruits and random little treats placed on the tables as well as refreshments. Sure enough, there was a pitcher of fruit juice and cups waiting for someone to put them to use.
Remembering his manners, he took a cup filled it and handed it to Davril. Then he poured one for himself. Butchering was not easy work and he was sure he didn't smell all that pleasant from the sweat and dried blood. But he was in good company and planned to keep it that way for several minutes. "I think it's nice coming from a big family. There always seems someone to talk to or get into trouble with or share secrets. I wouldn't have it any other way. That's why it would be nice to Impress, I think. The Weyr is a very large family."
Taking a gulp of his juice, he focused all his attention on Davril. "You enjoying yourself so far?"

Davril blushed as he laughed, she really wished she wasn't so awkward around men, it was such an annoyance, but she couldn't help it. As they walked she brushed her clothes off, brushing away bits of food that had stuck to her while she had been preparing lunch for the Weyr. She glanced back checking to see that her greens were right she left them, of course they were and she looked ahead again.
Taking the cup from him she smiled slightly. "Thank you," She lifted it to her lips sipping the juice. She glanced at the other Candidate from over the rim of her cup, pondering how old he was. Older than her she was certain, it seemed like most people in the Weyr were. Dropping her eyes she lowered the cup, cradling it in her hands. Listening to him speak she nodded, big family's were nice but as much as she loved them her younger siblings had been a pain to take care of. Both had been major brats.
She blinked as the topic of conversation swung to her. Looking into his eyes she smiled, "With you or at the Weyr?" Inwardly she was shocked, she had managed to flirt without shoving her foot in her mouth. Of course, it hadn't been the most flirtatious thing she could've said, but for her, that was pretty good. So of course she quickly kept talking trying to cover up what she had said. "At first I was homesick, missed my parents and my younger siblings a lot, even if they are brats. But after a couple of sevendays all that was replaced by anticipation. Here I am at Ista Weyr, with the chance to Impress a dragon, it's amazing really." As she spoke of dragons and Impressing she seemed to get lost in her own world, her eyes glittering with the excitement of one day becoming a dragon rider.

She could speak! And she had a very nice speaking voice as well, she even flirted a little with him. How sweet. He wondered how old she was and if she had any attachments yet. Though he could hear the scoldings of the Candidate Master and others over and over again in his head. He didn't have sex regularly but when the opportunity arose, what was a person to do?
"I hope you are enjoying both," he replied in a teasing fashion. He noticed a couple of flits staying close to her and waved to the both of them. "Yours or is someone watching you?"
He thought the little creatures cute but not really important to have... Maybe another way to impress the lads and ladies. "It would be a feat to Impress, if not, how many people are age can say they had the chance to live and learn a few things at their Weyr?"

Davril blushed a bit as he teased her, running her fingers through her hair. This wasn't so bad, he didn't seem to notice her nerves or awkwardness as much as she thought he might. Lifting the cup she sipped her juice, her eyes flicking to the fire lizards and then back to the boy with a small smile. "No, they're not mine, and I doubt anyone's watching me. Maybe someone's watching you." Her smile grew a bit and she leaned against the table as they talked.
She nodded at his next words. Yes, to Impress would be magical and amazing. Davril was hoping with all her might that she would be chosen by a dragon at the Hatching. "Aye, being in the Weyr is exciting by itself, but I admit it's my dream to Impress."

He was truly enjoying himself. Fruit juice finished, he placed the cup back on the table and continued to watch Davril blush and stutter. It was delightful to find someone fresh and not so...jaded? Blue eyes turned back to the flits and Jessan shrugged. "I don't think I have done anything to merit any watchers."
Jessan leaned a little closer to her staring into her light brown eyes. They seemed to sparkle a little as she talked about Impressing. Yes, he would love to Impress a dragon or maybe even one of those little flits. "I think we all have our hopes up once the Search dragon turns his or her eyes on us. And it blossoms the more we stay here. It would be nice to Impress but I wouldn't be hurt either. I miss the freedom I had as a herder."
Probably one of the most serious things he had ever said.
