February 109

Why couldn't Spring come already? Raising an arm above his eyes, Derek sighed as the sun shone through the sparse leaves of the tree he'd settled under. He really didn't like snow, it killed almost everything, including his mood. Muttering under his breath, he shifted on the cold substance as there was nothing between him and the ground. Cold was not what he enjoyed, he'd much rather stay in his barrack where it was warm and quiet. The only reason he was even out here was that his stupid wolf had decided to make a game of his guitar and sprinted off with it. All Derek could think of was the "Teeth marks, Emerald! No Teeth Marks!" in the neck wood as he ran after the energetic fool. Momentarily winded after 30 solid minutes of chasing him, he settled where he was now. "You are being ridiculous! Bring it back before you get it too wet!"

EmeraldWind grinned around the instrument in his maw, trotting over to his scowling rider. His plan to get Derek outside worked perfectly! The man had cooped himself up inside long enough for EmeraldWind's tastes. Dropping the guitar into the man's lap, he settled back and watched as he tried to scrub the slobber off. "Derek, you need to be outside! Running's fun!" Getting no real response apart from a mental 'Grow up' as the rider tested the working conditions of the strings, he bit the hem of the man's right pant leg, dragging him down and away from the tree instantly. This was accompanied by another loud sigh that would've made the wolf laugh aloud if he could.

Yawning almost lazily Twilight's tail fluffed as she stretched and flexed her claws slowly before straightening. She still had bone to pick with that unruly apprentice and his yappy little pup but for now, she was content with lazying around and enjoying the final grips of winter. It would be over soon, all too soon in her opinion, and when the snow melted and the air got warmer, the centipedes would come and she would be forced to return to dancing on a knife's edge with each passing battle against the abyssal creatures. Pushing such thoughts from her mind she gave a soft growl and waved a paw at her rider lazily in an unspoken complaint. She was bored and Alister would be forced to amuse her.

Alister would have preferred to stay in his room and for the most part sleep while he still could. Heavens knew he needed the sleep when he could get it, of course such a thing seemed to be becoming more and more of a precious commodity and less of a leisure. The knowledge of the situation had added a sharpened knife edge to his already vicious temper which would not bode well for anyone who crossed his path and managed to annoy him. Granted...there were a few exceptions to that rule. Tilting his head at the wolf, he watched the flailing paw before snorting softly. On down days such as these the wolf was always bored. And when she grew bored he was usually the one who paid.

Sighing he came close to answering her before stopping. What...was that...? Something had flashed across his field of vision and he redirected his attention to just what...or rather who had streaked past. Blinking once, then twice his eyes soon narrowed. Really didn't the privates have anything better to do than simply around the fort chasing their wolves? An amused chuckle sounded in his mind and he growled mentally at Twilight. Apparently the wolf was finding the situation amusing, and he would have had it not been for the fact that he was running on very little sleep and thus fairly annoyed.

Shaking the frost out of his hair frustratedly, Derek attempted to sit up, only to be dragged through the snow again. "What is wrong with you today, Emerald?!" Tugging his leg free from the crazy wolf's mouth, he physically restrained himself from bopping him on the nose. "Listen. To. Me. This," he waved the guitar, "is NOT a toy. You know better than to play with it." He was clearly upset with the wolf for this game he wanted to play. It wasn't enough that he was constantly getting into trouble and breaking things around the fort, now he had to drag Derek's personal items into it? "And you know what you've done? You imprinted your teeth on it! Teeth marks do not come out!" Brandishing the guitar again, he turned it to show EmeraldWind the indents left by his canines.

Smart enough to know that Derek was very serious about what he'd done wrong, EmeraldWind's ears flattened against his head slightly as he took the yelling. Alright, so maybe taking the guitar wasn't the best idea. But it was Derek's only special thing and he knew he would come for it! Derek needed to exercise more too, and the run would do him good. But... "I'm sorry, Derek. I know I shouldn't have done it. I just wanted you to come outside. The snow will be gone soon, and you need fresh air, and more human contact, like with that person over there! I wasn't trying to hurt the instrument. I wanted to help you!" Calming for the first time that day, EmeraldWind sat down, lowering his head slightly.

Scowl softening slightly at the wolf's words, he touched his hand to the white streak on the the wolf's head. "It's okay, I'm not upset. Don't do it again though!" This he managed to say with a small smile, rubbing the furry spot until the ears poped back up and the dismal feeling lifted from the wolf. EmeraldWind needed to be happy anywa-- "Wait, what person...?" Glancing up, he looked around, spotting the tell-tale white of a uniform beneath red and blond hair... He'd been so busy being upset with Emerald that he hadn't sensed the eyes on him. Checking the person out, he noted that the rest of the guy wasn't that bad looking before he realized that it was... "S-sergant Shields, Sir..." Gripping the guitar a bit stronger, he decided that he did need to get out more if he couldn't recognize a higer ranked officer immediately.

Ears pricking forward Twilight paused in her pawing turning her head toward the direction the commotion was coming from. One glance at the flailing rider and the wolf, and she snorted in amusement tail wagging as she rolled onto her stomach and then bounced to her feet shaking the remnants of snow from her fur. They seem to be an interesting pair...though I dare say I haven't seen them often. Mismatched eyes flicking to her rider for a moment before she stretched and began to pad toward the wolf and human her curiosity getting the best of her.

Interesting and annoying tend to run along the same line. Feeling the wolf's gaze on him before she moved off Alister near sighed as he pushed off the wall and trailed after the black wolf. He knew he should recognize the man at least but for the most part he couldn't place him. Huffing at his own lack of recognition Alister paused a few feet from where Derek lay, an raised an eyebrow in silent question. Just what the hell was the man doing sitting in the remains of the snow, or rather sitting in the snow after being dragged around by his partly insane wolf?

"Private..." he said nodding acknowledging the man. Gaze drifting from Derek's face for a moment his mismatched eyes lingered on the guitar. No vaguely sane person would have such an instrument enduring such abuse from a wolf. True Twilight occasionally stole his violin but that was when it was properly secured in its case and away from the she-wolf's teeth...more or less.

Blinking as the man approached, Derek quickly assesed his situation from his position on the ground. He was not getting up after his wolf had taken such great pains to put him down there. However, he straightened, sitting upright to not seem completely disrespectful. Giving a small salute to the handsome rider, he gave his name. "Derek, Derek Quinn." He was actually pleased that his name didn't come up in the man's memory. It was his intention to make it easier on the lives of the people in this fort and not be remembered by too many. This one might be an exception as well... Brushing the bang of midnight blue hair from his face, he gave a half smile as it fell back.

Greetings Twilight~ There was an edge of excitement in the wolf's tone as he greeted the Beta, lowering himself into a submissive position. EmeraldWind had never met the dark wolf personally, but he'd heard of her from her pup FlameWake, and told her as much. Glancing at his rider, he chuckled. He certainly wasn't that displeased at being outside anymore. My rider refuses to leave his barracks, so I stole the guitar to get him outside. A simple plan but it worked perfectly!

Ignoring the feelings of amusement from his wolf, he followed Alister's gaze to his instrument. "Yeah, I was only chasing him to get he-it back before he bruised it too much..." Turning the instrument back to proper playing position, he began absently plucking a light tune as his eyes drifted. "Ah~ What do you play?" he asked, crimson eyes noting the calluses on left fingers that could only come from stringed instruments... and he was still checking him out. He really couldn't help it, the man looked good from that angle.

It wasn’t that bad of day considering it was still a bit wintery. The upside was that she would soon be back at work, which for Calla was always a good thing, the downside was that it put her ever closer to having to draw out of battle. That thought always rather irritated Calla, and reminded her that it was Alister’s fault. Speaking of the man she spotted him not far off…and with some poor private or another at his feet. Great, it wasn’t even that late in the day and he was about tormenting the Privates. Calla swore the man did more abusing his rank than being an actual Sergeant. Whatever it was she realized she would have to set it straight and give Alister a good scolding, something she still reserved the right to do.
As she drew closer she realized there wasn’t near as much irritation coming off of Alister than she had expected, well that was always a good sign. Content with the fact that she didn’t need to keep him in reign Calla relaxed and examined the Private at his feet. The face seemed familiar, but that wasn’t what struck her at first. In fact, what struck her was something she entirely didn’t like. Something about the man bothered her indeed, as she moved closer she pulled herself up to her full height, which didn’t seem to do much good as she was already shorter than both Alister and the Private on the ground.
Don’t you have something you should be doing Sergeant?” Calla questioned lazily, leaning on his shoulder and shooting him a glare, “Same for you Private.” That was a plus side to being Sergeant, you didn’t have to go about memorizing people’s names, you could call someone Private without being considered a total a**.

WoodWhisp lay in the shade behind a few bushes out of site. Not the best hiding spot, but good enough for when Calla wasn’t actively pursuing him. It was from here that he had watched as EmeraldWind ran about with a guitar in his mouth and the wolves rider chasing after him. It had been an entertaining sight for awhile until the two had settled down. And then he had lost interest for a bit and gone back to sleep, but when he awoke he found Alister speaking with the Private and Twilight not far off. It was the sight of his mate that finally drew him from the bushes, shaking the leaves from his fur he trotted over to Twilight and the green and grey male. Nuzzling his mate as he sat down beside her and listened to EmeraldWind’s explanation to the chase scene he’d been watching earlier.
Ah, you are lucky my friend. WoodWhisp chimed in with an over-exaggerated sigh, I can’t seem to get Calla to stay in her barracks. He flicked his tail in the direction of his rider, who seemed intent on causing some sort of trouble or another.

There was a near blank look on Alister's face at the mention of the man's name before it finally clicked. Ah, so this was ever elusive guitarist he'd caught wind of many a time. Of course he'd had better things to do at those times that he hadn't pursued his curiosity, that and he'd gotten swept up by all manner of insanity. Quirking an eyebrow at Derek at the slight absent plucking Alister calmly ignored it instead focusing on Derek's next words.

"Violin." he said lightly, before his annoyance was back full force. Why was the source of both his lack of sleep, and his recent spike in stress here? Dipping his shoulder he returned Calla's glare coolly. "I could be asking you the same thing." Regarding the woman with little to no interest he moved to put distance between himself and Calla. He had no problem with her being around when she started to invade his personal space that was when he had a problem. Especially as of late.

Setting herself next to Alister she gave a slight grin at the explanation. Greetings EmeraldWind. You seem to have had a rather eventful morning. she said tail swaying slowly behind her as she studied the green and gray wolf. A spike in Alister's annoyance level made her tilt her head in his direction before she saw the full source of the problem and barely stifled a laugh. A soft purring growl slipped from her throat as she tilted her head to look at WoodWhisp and grinned. If you found a way to keep her in her barracks then we wouldn't be able to amuse ourselves with the chaos to come. she said chuckling as she gestured toward the humans.

Nodding slightly as Alister answered his question, a sour chord struck through the dark haired rider as the new voice startled him. Who was this woman… it was a woman right? The hair said no but the chest said… yes, female. But he hadn’t seen her much and judging by the way she was carrying herself, she was someone of rank. His memory pieced it together instantly. That New Eve transfer that became Sergeant, what was her name? Calla… B… Bianchi? It might have just been a paranoid vibe, but she didn’t seem to like him very much…

Judging from Alister’s careful shift away from the woman, Derek figured that he either didn’t like her, or he didn’t like people touching him without a purpose. The second might put a damper on his plans if he couldn’t get close to the man… He'd just try a little harder. “No ma’am, we were just having a conversation wi- about wolves and instruments...” Getting to his feet slowly, he brushed the remnants of snow off of his pants gently then gave her a salute. He was uncomfortable with people over him... and slightly annoyed at being interrupted, but he’d learned to accept it with EmeraldWind around. "With both of you here, who's patrolling?"

Bowing to WoodWhisp in the same manner, he straightened back up before sitting. He learned that being respectful to those that deserved it always put him in good graces when he got in trouble. I guess we have really different ideas of lucky then! Derek stays in his barracks for unbelievable lengths of time, so except for training exercises and drills, when he’s outside it’s almost like a miracle. He laughed at Twilight’s comment, eyes shifting towards the little group of riders. Eventful if you consider running then being scolded for it… Watching the exchange between the two mates, his smile turned quizzical at the words. Chaos…?

No idea what Calla is wearing in this thread... but just making this a general note since I don't think it's addressed anywhere. But name and rank is on each wolfrider's uniform - on the left side of the chest, the cord is different for each rank and the gold rectangular plate above the cord has the name of the wolfrider (ie C. Bianchi).

Calla nodded to the Private, as it was his question was actually well founded.
I have been working all morning on this and that actually.” Calla pointed out, shooting another glare at him to prove her point. She hadn’t actually been working on much, just busy work for the most part. Sure it was going to be summer soon and they would be facing the centipedes but until they actually came there wasn’t a whole lot that needed to be done other than drills and practice, but that was whenever Riya announced. As such all the Apprentices were settled in with their Patrons, there were no current transfers other than her own, she hadn’t been able to find WoodWhisp to go out on Patrol, and the thought of shooting at targets that didn’t shoot back did not appeal to her, so she’d went to find Alister. As it was she was glad she had, she had barely spoken to Derek for more than five seconds and he already seemed on slightly irritating.
I’ve been trying to get as much work done now as possible.” Calla’s tone was light, one hand in her pocket the other resting lightly on Metaphor out of habit, “If I’m going to be forced out of commission for a few months I’m going to enjoy it.” She spoke sarcastic but she shot another sharp glare at Alister. She had eventually accepted the idea that she was going to be out for a few months at least, but that didn’t meant she was happy about it. In fact quite the contrary, she absolutely despised the idea and had made sure Alister heard about it.

Ah, but if I could get Calla to stay in her Barracks you and I might get some sleep. WoodWhisp pointed out, watching as EmeraldWind stood and bowed to him. WoodWhisp tried to repress the chuckle, he really did, but it came about anyway. He was a terrible Beta, of that he was sure. The thought of anyone being submissive to him made him laugh, and he had given up trying to be dominant within days. It just wasn’t his style, he preferred to befriend and earn the respect of his pack. He found it made battle run smoother anyway. As such he still found it humorous whenever someone actually treated him like a Beta. Shaking this from his thoughts he glanced at Twilight, he just might as well leave her to elaborate at just what that Chaos meant, after all she had brought it up. And anyway, Calla was watching him closely now that she’d found him, any slip in information might just set her off. The strangest of things seemed to be setting her off these days. Including, for some reason that eluded him, Derek right there was even setting her off.

Rolling his shoulders slowly Alister considered the question Derek had posed before a slight smirk tugged at his lips and he gave into the motion. ”I’ve been prowling the fort from well before dawn. I do believe I’m entitled a break or two.” Tilting his head to one side he countered Calla’s glares with the slightest hint of a smirk and narrowed eyes. The lunatic woman was still convinced it was his fault she would be out of commission for several months at a time. True he could have escaped the first time she’d approached him but he hadn’t backed down. As for the other times, he’d concluded that there was no escape from the game that had already started.

Still, that didn’t stop him from barely swallowing down an irritated growl. The woman’s constant reminders and ranting were the causes of his lack of sleep and the reason why he’d taken to patrolling the fort at odd hours of the day. Of course a healthy sense of self preservation kept him from answering the woman’s ranting. Much.

Sleep isn’t always to be had when she stays in her barracks and you know it. Twilight’s voice had taken on a light almost purring quality as she stretched, her back cracking with the motion. Settling back down she tilted her head at EmeraldWind and gave a light grin. Simply watch and see. After all, have you ever seen these two stay in the same place without causing some form of trouble? the question needed no answer as it was right before them. Anyone in their right mind that had crossed paths with either of the newly appointed Sergeants would know that chaos trailed them like the plague and then some.

Nodding, Derek made note of the replies given, a smirk tugging at his lips. An answer of 'this and that' usually meant little to nothing of importantance, and 'prowling' would qualify as aimless wandering if done before daylight in his books. Then again, he might be wrong, but he was hardly ever... Their wolves were obviously mates, was that why she transferred? Possibly, but Calla's last sentence had him puzzled though... "Forced out of commission...?"

When he'd spent time on the streets during the day he'd become pretty good at assessing people at a glance, and he wasn't sure that he like what he was interpreting... The glances between the two, the glares, the smirks, their body language towards each other was guarded yet very familiar. Calla had transferred recently, only to be put out of commission soon... "Ah, I see..." It made sense, of course. Just his luck too, all the good ones... "You two are together, aren't you?"

He may like the new Betas very much if they were this relaxed, especially since WoodWhisp laughed. While staying in one place wasn't really his strong suit, curiosity was getting the better of him. Grinning, his hind leg rose to scratch at an unsettled tuft of fur. I believe that I've seen them, but I tend to keep my distance from obscenity-shouting riders. He began getting excited again. I'd loved to see Derek get into good trouble. The barracks are so dull day after day!
