Here's the situation: I go to a private school, and ditched [as usual] when my class had a 'retreat' where [from what i've heard] they just sit around, talk about God, and watch lame movies and cry. But this year it was different. For the first time, the retreat was led by a religious group, not a teacher. Basically, it was boring until the last hour, whereupon this woman started condemning gays, saying that "God abandoned them," selecting segments from the Bible that supported her opinions. [[i think in Leviticus, looked it up once]] There were quite a few lesbians there [[all of them my friends]] who walked out in the middle of her gay bashing, some crying. The next day, those girls were reprimanded because what they did was "rude." When I found out, I was revolted. How dare that woman talk about my friends that way! So, my friends and I got together [in secret] one day and discussed the most appropriate way to handle this. I want to take immediate action, and i don't care if they expel me, for i will not tolerate this. and i know full well that i may just stand alone, with everyone at the meeting cowering behind me. BUT HOW do i go about this? i've unofficially become the head of the alliance. [irony: i'm not even gay AND i wasn't there when all this happened! Am I even qualified to address this issue? I was not there when this happened. I've asked my friends to tell me what happened factually, but i'm sure feelings distorted Truth slightly.] And all oppostion to the Catholic church is crushed. No single parent will side with me, no-one wants conflict. This I know. I've come to terms with expulsion [i've always wanted to go to public school anyway] but i need advice nonetheless.

[boo's guild]First: there is no real right or wrong way of adressing the issue, and you're not going to be able to make everyone happy.
You questioned if you are qualified to adress this, but from what you have said, you most definitly are. You don't have to be the one discriminated against to know that it is wrong, and there is nothing wrong with standing up for what you believe in.
I'm sure a letter to the administration would be the best approach [not an e-mail that one can delete with a simple click] to this. Try adressing the issue as calmly as possible, showing anger will come across as an angsty teen.
[sorry, I'm kinda rambling...]
The points I would adress would be... State your faith in your religion, maybe explain how it gives you faith, keeps you strong, ect [it is ok to fabricate this to gain their trust] Then explain that the comfort found in religion is open for all people, and school should also provide a safe and positive place for all students. Then go about explaining how feelings were hurt, school doesn't feel safe for particular students, ect. Remind them that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but discrimination will not be tolerated by you. State what you want to happen as a result of the incdent, and what you don't want to see in the future.
I'm sure you get the point.
Sign your name at the bottom, and have other students [or anyone who agrees] sign it as well, as a sort of petition.
You said that nobody wants conflict? If you take action, it is not starting conflict because it is the result of that woman's prejudice, but don't play the blame game.
Sorry, I hope I helped.
Make sure to post how it all goes, and remember that you're not alone in your opinions, your friends are backing you and so would many people around the world.
Good luck, and please tell your friends for me that I believe in them, that the speaker was voicing her prejudiced and twisted beliefs. Keep your own beliefs, stand by them, and no one can break you. not questing for the first time evar

T^T thanks, Boo! I really needed a morale booster! i drafted a letter a day after posting that, but then Life seems to have added a twist: I got into NHS earlier this week and now that i feel like i have a fighting chance to get into the Ivies, i....well, i have srs inhibitions. a disciplinary infringement could obliviate everything. and it sucks how now that i'm a crusader for this Cause, all of a sudden all these chicks think i'm hawt and stuff. >.>;; uggh!!!! no one comes to meetings anymore and i truly am alone. i want to do this, but i'm so pissed off at myself because now all of a sudden i'm afraid. stressed

[boo's guild]I'm very glad I could help you feel a bit better. I'm not quite sure of what all the acronims [sp?] stand for, but I think I understand what you're saying.
Have they told you, or come onto you? If they just say that they think you're hot, they might just be saying that more as a compliment than as flirting. Some of them might think that you just haven't come out of the closet yet... just blatantly state that you're straight, not into them, and that you don't want to be rude.
I understand the alone part. Try to contact them, make sure that they all know that if they want things to change, everyone has to be committed to it. If not, things won't change.
If you're seriously putting your own education at risk for people that are no longer backing you, I [with regret] suggest backing out of this situation.
Never be upset with yourself for being afraid because: 1. you can't change how you feel, so acting and thinking on the anger will only depress or fustrate you more 2. fear is programed into your brain to keep you from doing stupid things that might harm or kill you. Think of it as a fire alarm, it might be something small, but big enough to set off the alarms... [like someone burning cookies in cooking class], or it could be an actual fire. In the end, only you can determine how dangerous whatever set off your alarm is, and if it is worth your time, effort, and risk.
In the end, you will do whatever you were meant to do.

It just bothered me how right when i made my decision, THAT had to happen, you know? [[not like it's a bad thing, i was just so sure i wasn't National Honor material]] what like Ivies? >.>;; a little of both. oh, but you could be roit; i see what you're saying. i just figured they were making fun of me & my low self-esteem. someone:"you're sexy!" me: "shut up, a*****e!"D:< yeah i have to stop being a jerk..... thanks so much, Boo. I;ll have a meeting on wed and if no one shows up, i'll abort The Mission. I called a friend this morning other day to ask her [[my so-called Second in Command of this alliance]] why she didn't show up the last two times & she said we should let it go, which enraged me. BUT i didn't force her to come. hell, the least we could do is wear those little rainbow ribbons in silent, nonviolent protest!

[boo's guild][NHS and Ives. explain please?]
Silent protests work wonders: everyone who sees you will know what you're standing for [if not, they'll probably ask someone], and it shows that you are civilized, and don't have to make a scene to shove your opinions in peoples' faces'.
You're quite welcome, and I wish the best of luck.
P.S. If you have time, I'd absolutely LOVE it if you could stop by the anniversary sub-forum, maybe chat, enter one, or two, [or heck, all] of the contests? We put a lot of effort into it [which is an understatement...] and like nobody has shown up D;

NHS= national honor society. at my school, also known as the Elite Cheaters Circle, as all the 'smart' kids in it are notorious cheaters. it's like a group of smart kids that do service activities so as to benefit the community; we're supposed to be exemplary students with good grades and whatnot. ivies= Ivy league colleges. basically just Vassar to me; i KNOW i'm too dumb to get into anywhere else. yeah nobody showed up, but my friend got a text she showed me [[i don't have a cell phone]] that said everyone wanted to protect me cuz i'm one of 2 kids who got into NHS that actually deserved that privilege. but i'll try an get those ribbons anyway. not to sound like a blubbery crybaby, but i'm so grateful to you for helping me out boo! heart yeah i'm crying a little bit. hehh. sorry. yeah totally. i intend to do so as soon as i get my dern laptop back from the shop, since i completely ruined it. i'll try and do some raffles now if my brother decides to stay at teh mall [[on his comp illegally.]]

I do hope I am not breaking a rule by posting this. I just want to let you know that I am sorry this happened. If I were listening to her, I would have been deeply disturbed. Here is a lovely little psychological fact that you may enjoy. Most people who are homosexual have been found to have a small substance in the back of their brain that straight people do not have. There was one case of twins in which one was gay and the other wasn't, so homosexuality is not a gene, but it may be triggered by something in the brain. I do believe it is not a choice, but there is much debate over the subject.
I hope you get into your school and I am sorry for this disturbance! It irritates me when someone claiming to be a Christian works for the opposite force. What she spoke was no message of God. ^^

Don't be sorry! You didn't do anything oh wow that's interesting! Was it some sort of excess neurotransmitter, or something?? [[lawl, i gotta tell my friends about that]] word, mann! it's nice to know there are more people out there who use their minds, instead of being friggin' tape recorders "the catholic church says this...." "the catholic church says this...." I hate people like that. So. Much. stressed

Agreed. They push people away from the gospel and they are the reasons many others repel themselves from the church. They do the work of the devil, and they do not even know they are doing it. Unfortunately, there is virtually no way to make the causes of their actions clear. But you would probably be interested to know that 99% of all of the Christians I know (which is quite a few) do not follow the "church" in the sense that "If you're [blank] you go to hell!!!" I believe most Christians who practice their faith do not spew insensitive words that could repel others. Maybe that makes me naive.
