My son, Aden, is 12-months old, and he needs to get his hair cut! It looks fine on top, but the back is getting quite long -- it's even beginning to look a bit mullet-like!

I'm struggling with whether or not to chop off that hair yet. It's got some curl to it, especially after a bath, and it's just soooo cute! He needs it cut eventually... I'm just hoping that little bit of curl stick around!

Now... I'm wondering if, when we do decide to get it cut, we should take him somewhere, or should I try to do it myself? A friend of mine recommended a cheaper place in town here, who will give you a "First Haircut" certificate and they'll keep some of the hair for you, if you want -- is that worth it? I can always grab a lock of hair off the floor if I do it myself. Does anyone here cut their child's hair? Is it difficult? I've never cut anyone's hair before... it's not like he needs a style, just some hair taken off the back. But I'm worried that I'd slip and get his neck or something.

Someone advise me here!!

Good for you for getting his hair cut! I held on much too long with my first. sweatdrop Horrible sad mullet!

Anyways, I don't cut my own kids hair. I just am not gifted. Now, I don't know how your kiddo's personality, but with Liam, I HAD to take him somewhere. Logan was soooo easy and fearless, he really adored the experience.

I take them (till they get old enough to handle it) to a specific place for kids called Cool Cuts 4 Kids or something similiar. They get to sit in a firetruck, watch a movie, eat a lollipop. The hairstylists are SO quick too!

I want to say I paid like $14 for it? But that's just what I did, do what you feel comfortable. The best part is hair grows back! My boys have had a couple oopsie haircuts along the way, but they grow like weeds!

Maybe I'll look into how much it costs in town. Unfortunately we don't have any place with firetrucks or anything in town... just places that will do kids hair. Luckily the way Aden's hair curls, it sometimes doesn't look quite as long in the back... but I know it's long and it starts to drive me crazy! I know my mom and grandma used to cut our hair, but I dunno... I think I'd be a little worried to cut Aden's. Both me and his dad have to hold him down just to cut his nails!

I think maybe I'll ask around and see what friends of mine did...

It depends on what kind of hairstyle you want for him. If you want his hair longer like a surfer boy style, I'd say go get it cut by a professional. Plus, they usually have fun chairs and sweets, so it's a fun thing.

If you want his hair in a crew cut style or just really short, I'd say invest in a decent trimmer with a guard and just do it yourself. It might not look great the first time, but with practice, you'll get better and be saving a lot of haircut money in the years to come.

The trimmer I use has a plastic guard, so it's about impossible to cut him (except maybe the ear, so be extra careful around his lobes). And I can either buzz it all off, or just trim the back and let the top stay longer. He loves it, and sometimes I let him hold the trimmer and try it himself (while I'm holding his hands, and also, he's older). It's pretty easy. Really, the hardest part is when he's feeling squirmy or cleaning up all the hair afterwards.

His hair is actually growing pretty well every where but the back. All that he really needs done is getting rid of the mullet. He doesn't really need a style or anything... so I think it would be simple enough.

We've done it both ways with Ethan, though we prefer to take him elsewhere because hair clean up is a pain. When he got his first haircut, they gave us a lock of his hair and I couldn't tell you where it is. Shows you how sentimental I am. wink

If all you want to do for now is trim the back, I'd do it myself, personally. Unless you're uncomfortable with it, then I'd have someone else do it.

I think I will buy some hair scissors when Richard gets paid next week. It won't be hard to pull that hair down and snip it. I figure I'll just sit him in his booster, throw a towel over the back of the chair so hair doesn't get wedged in ahywhere, give him a snack to distract him, and there we go. It shouldn't be a ton of hair to clean up... nothing I can't handle, anyway... and then I can just save a lock of it myself.

My daughter had the baby mullet thing too. I got the sharp scissors I use to cut my bangs, sat her on the kitchen table, and while my husband entertained her, I cut her hair. Snip, snip, snip! and the mullet was GONE! At that age, it's about all it takes. We filmed it, got pictures and even saved the little locks in a ziplock baggie and stored in her baby book.

Now that Raelin is older, I still cut her hair. She's been to a stylist once and since then, I've just maintained that hairstyle. I don't want to pay $10-15 bucks every few months because her hair starts getting shabby and uneven.

Luckily Aden's got really nice hair... and other than the mullet, he probably won't need a real cut for awhile yet. It's probably about an inch and a half long on top, but it's still quite thin and light blonde so you can't really tell it's that long. I'd probably be more worried about it if he had thick, dark hair like my 18 month old niece... but since it's thin and blonde, I'm just worried about that mullet!

Lily has a bit of a baby mullet going on. gonk

I have to take Dedrick somewhere. We learned that the hard way. His hair is so fine you need a professional grade buzzer to cut his hair. He looks kind of like a girl if you let his hair grow out though. That's one of the reasons he got his first cut. People kept telling me I had a cute little girl.

Neither of my kids have had their first haircuts yet and both need them. Actually, Zoe took a few snips out of her own hair once, but I wouldn't call that a real haircut. wink We've been talking about taking them to have the haircuts done soon.

We've decided to cut it at home.

We bought a pair of hair cutting scissors yesterday and we're going to do it sometime this week. I figure if I mess up, we'll take him somewhere. All I plan on doing is snipping at the back -- everywhere else looks fine. So it shouldn't be too difficult.

I never had this problem with Raelin, but she once gave our Maine Coon a haircut. O_o There were tufts of brown fur everywhere! But thankfully she didn't cut anything important off.

Well, I did it. I cut his hair.

We put his booster seat on the floor, because our chairs have really high backs that would be hard to work around. I draped a towel over the back of the chair, and we gave him a treat to distract him.. and Richard was there to distract him too. It was a little bit sad seeing his precious hair on the floor, but I saved a piece of the baby book. It's all good. It looks fine, too. A little uneven in places, but alright for my first time cutting anyone's hair!
