I've been using GHS Flea Signature Bass Boomers (45-105), but I've been wanting to try out some flatwound strings (I have a Squier Vintage Modified 70's Jazz Bass). The only problem is that I like to occasionally slap around a bit, and I'm concerned how flats will put up with that and how they sound.

And just to give a little conversation since there haven't been any posts here in almost a month, what strings do you use?

Go for half wounds which are regular round wounds that are smoothed down to feel like flat wounds. Great balance of tone and feel. Flats really make you sound pretty muddy and should only be used if you want to sound like an old school double bass or some thing like that.

I'm interested in flatwounds because when I play I am almost always going for a warm, mellow tone.
Just an interesting fact that seems appropriate, Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris is known for using flatwound strings.

Just use more bass and less treble on your amp. It should do the job a lot better, besides you don't want to be too warm and mellow or you loose that bight that will bring out your playing over the drums.
Trust me, it's way better to stick with the rounds. (I had the same idea in my head for a while, tried it out it wasn't really that wonderful at all.)

Nakashi: Flatwounds are strings that use a flat wire around the core, so they are smoother. They are mostly for fretless basses so as not to damage the fretboard.

if your looking for a tone that isnt very trebely go flat if not id stick to round. i used flats at a gig once. worst thing i could do. didnt like the tone at all. i play rock basically all kinda and i only use rounds. except for on the upright bass that i just got. that has flats and it sounds like i think an upright is sopposed to sound like
