We have horses and one way we cut down on misquitoes is that we keep the 25 cent goldfish in our water tanks. We live in FL - they are fine out there year round. We never have to feed them.
In our 100 gallon tank we have 2 goldfish that've been there for 2 years. I was hoping they would be a boy and a girl but - no babies crying Is there a way to sex goldfish?
We had a breeding pair of betas in that tank but I think the golds ate them? Do goldfish 2-3 inches long become aggresive?
In another tank we have a pair of goldfish that are only about 1-2 inches long. One is orange and the other is/was white/calico. The white/calico turned orange/calico. Do goldfishes turn color?

goldfish actually like cold water so i dont know how long they will last or how well they will do outside in florida
there is a way to sex goldfish i dont remember but should be easy enough to find out? :3
how big were the goldfish? like most fish they will eat anything that can easily fit into their mouth and goldfish can get pretty big...and betta are pretty small... i dont think gold fish are aggressive...they eat aggressively though in my opinion XD
im pretty sure they can change color...i think a few fish do that as they age. they dont look the same color/pattern as they start growing as long as it isnt turning black...then i think its a disease.

The previous poster is correct, it isn't ideal to keep goldfish at higher temps. Also, many goldfish will change colors as they age. I would suspect your bettas were more likely taken by birds rather than eaten by the goldfish.
A good alternative to the goldfish may be Mosquitofish. They are often used specifically to get rid of mosquitoes in standing water. They are tolerant of much higher temperatures, and they are livebearers, so they will breed more readily and more prolifically, providing you with lots and lots of fish to keep down the mosquito population.

No, the fishes are all outside. The ones in the huge water trough are goldfish that cost 28 cents. They are now about 11 inches long and bright orange. I don't think they mid being outside at all. The other fishes are in a smaller trough. They are also goldfish but one was calico color and the other was orange. The calico is turning colors but not disease colors.
Horses don't like to drink hot water so the water tanks are not in the open sunlight.
What is a Mosquitofish?

it doesnt matter if its in the sunlight the water needs to be below 70 degrees F (around 65-6 cool and im sure it isnt that cold all year round if at all...they may not last as long as they could another thing gold fish put out HUGE amounts of waste so your horses are drinking fish crap/pee even if you change the water once a day...they still crap a lot
and yeah...a bird probably ate your betta then if its all outside
Mosquitofish kinda looks like a guppy but real plain silver color. you can probably find them just about anywhere you can find water they will also breed a lot so even if birds decide they wanna eat your fish, there will still be a bunch to eat your mosquitoes
