The next half hour had been spent pacing.

Not that there was really anything better to do. Vale had made short work of leaving, irritated as all hell.

Damnit-- they were idiots! What the hell kind of bullshit was that? “OH, I brought this useless overdramatic piece of s**t-- But I am going to complain because your friend who actually does something strikes me as a little gay for no apparent ********-- Could someone really be that retarded? It made absolutely no sense, the ******** hypocrite.

It only took a few more minutes of enraged thought before Ciro found himself storming out the door.

Who the ******** did he think he was, stirring up bullshit like that…!? All the drama of the night, all of it was his damn fault…!!

Finding his way to the Scene-- Ciro knew that the only way to get anything done was to ask around. Better still, the scene responded well to him. People recognized him for his father, which made asking questions much easier. Yet in every single person there, he saw some hipster f*****t. Unsurprisingly, they reminded him of Fish-- at least more than he would have liked for comfort.

It turned out the kid was living in some kind of drug den, with a bunch of stoners and fudge-packers. Ha-- it was getting all the more ironic-- How could he insult Vale when he tolerated those queers?!

Weirder still, Ciro was informed that if he wanted to be supplied, he needed to use the fire escape. If he wanted a good time, however, he could use the front door. And while he was looking for neither of these-- he at least knew what a “Good time” entailed. And Ciro-- Ciro was looking for trouble.

The sky had already darkened considerably by the time he had reached the place. That was more a blessing than anything-- Ciro didn’t need the rumors getting back that two freaks were fighting in the scene, one of which had earlier caused a ruckus in middling.

And he didn’t need Anubis to go butting in again, either.

Standing quite arrogantly at the window, his fist pounded heavily against the metal frame.

“YOU ******** f*****t!!”

He had put two and two together when he was scoping for information-- the reason Fish lived with those types had become painfully obvious. He had to be an idiot not to realize from the moment Fish had insulted Vale.

“GET YOUR PANSY a** OUT HERE!!”

Fish was not actually in the apartment, so all of Ciro's banging was not doing him any good. His shouting, however, was heard by practically everyone in the neighborhood. Including Fish, who was coming up the alley with a bag of groceries.

Judging by the shouting, Ciro had finally put two and two together, gotten five, and was not happy about this lapse in arithmetic law. Fish put the groceries down and cursed. His trident was in the apartment. Looked like he was going into this partially unarmed.

"You called?" he yelled up to the man on the fire escape.

This, he decided, was not going to end well.

He turned in an instant, glaring down the fire escape to the man below. If glares could kill-- this would do it.

“YOU PIECE OF s**t!!”

His hands gripped the iron railing of the fire escape, the metal seemed to hiss in protest of his body heat.

“You think throwing your s**t onto Vale makes you less weird?! Trying to recruit so you can ******** him too!?”

Damnit-- Damnit. Damnit! DAMNIT!! DAMNIT!!!

He was probably with Alex, too. Some huge ********. God-- they probably all had AIDs! Running around trying to recruit little kids to join them… It was just ******** sick! Where the hell did they get off on that kind of s**t!?

And to accuse Vale of being gay towards CIRO!? He might has well of called Ciro gay himself! It was like some huge plan to convert everyone into his own personal ******** harem!!

God-- The very thought made him want to vomit. Hell-- maybe he could even vomit all over Fish’s gay a** down there. At least then he’d know the dept of Ciro’s disgust.

Fish looked up at Ciro, squinting in the fading light. Well, this was... far less than favorable. s**t. This was way less than favorable. He tried to think of who would be in the apartment right now - hopefully no one. Hopefully, if there was anyone in there, they'd have the good sense to stay inside.

"Took you long enough," he said, "Though I can honestly say I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to Vale."

Forget adding two and two and getting five. Ciro had added two and two and gotten sixty-nine, thought Fish.

God damn it. He had no idea what was going through Ciro's head right now, but it could not possibly be good.

Poseidon burbled something about being confused by such an adverse reaction. In ancient Greece, the situation was totally normal.

Well, in case you hadn't noticed, Fish thought to the god, This is not exactly ancient Greece.

”It helps what with you LYING the entire god damn time. What, you finish SUCKING d**k and decide to come chill!?”

He was fuming now-- there was no way that he could tolerate this-- he had let this guy into his home! Having Alex there was bad enough-- what, had his house suddenly become the new Gay bar or something? It was ******** ridiculous.

What was he supposed to do, though? Just punch the gay right out of him? Things didn’t work that way.

But he couldn’t just do nothing-- he had come here out of impulse-- to stop now would just be retarded.

His grip tightened-- just what was he supposed to do? Was he going to fight?

He probably had to. That seemed like the best answer. Better that then let Gay Cancer spread throughout town.

Yes, he most definitely had to. And on the plus side… It got more competition out of the way.

It was a good thing, Fish being gay. It meant Ciro didn’t have to feel guilty when he kicked his a**.

Surely, surely anyone else would have done the same thing in this situation.

And so, he jumped.

He knew that jumping-- especially in his condition, would be stupid. He knew that.

Yet… climbing all the way down the fire would take time-- as well as leaving him open to any sort of attack.

Besides, the shock seemed like nothing compared to the wounds from his last battle.

Regaining his full height, Ciro knew his look would be enough to tell Fish his intent.

If not, however, he decided that remotely igniting his groceries would get the point across well enough.

“You said it yourself,” The growl that came out of his throat seemed almost inhuman, “This’s gotta happen someday.”

Fish looked up at Ciro, doing his best tough guy impression. "I never lied," he said, cool as a cucumber. "It just never seemed important."

Obviously, it was. In a very, very bad way. He wondered if Ciro would be this angry if he'd told him about this whole greek hero thing ages ago. Probably. Ciro was not known for being particularly rational.

He was trying to act calm. However, inside his head, Fish's brain was doing a mile a minute trying to come up with a strategy. Blast Ciro in the face with water and make a run with it? His eyes were embers, after all. Maybe he could extinguish his vision? Or stay and fight?

Adrenaline coursed through his veins, a natural reaction to danger. The gills on his neck flared, exposing the fear he felt. He tried to remain calm.

"Are you going to kill me?" he asked.

The flames begun to erupt from the boys hands, curling and licking at his arms like a ravenous beast waiting for it’s dinner.

“Do you really have to ask that?”

Ciro, really, found it to be quite a stupid question. Of course he was going to kill him. It was out of the question to do anything else. What did Fish think-- that Ciro could, quite honestly, forget about the game for one moment and let him live? Bullshit-- his entire life had been built for this game. No way he was going to back down now.

Besides… Faggots were supposed to be flaming.

He tried to return fire by turning the shield into a high-powered jet of water and aiming it in Ciro's general direction.

The water fizzed popped, evaporating with the sheer heat of the flames from the man. The downside, of course, being that his fire could not burn in the wet steam. What flames had been shot fizzled out, extinguished by the liquid in the air.

There would have to be a way to think this through. Heat could work wonders with evaporation-- but to get enough heat to dry out the air would require….

No, he didn’t want to think like that. He was supposed to stay calm. The boiling blood was a measure against emotions-- to go that far would be painful to the Godling.

He needed to get clever in this fight-- or at least avoid it becoming a battle of powers. If it came down to sheer fighting-- Ciro could win in a heartbeat, and he knew it.

“Good. At least you got it.”

That would make this fight a lot easier-- knowing that there was no holding back.

His first shot of water didn't have quite the... impact... that Fish had been hoping for, but it slowed Ciro just enough for Fish to avoid receiving return fire.

Clearly, making Ciro soggy was not the best plan of action - it evaporated too quickly. If only he had his trident... He could even visualize it. It was leaning against the wall in his bedroom, so close and yet so far away.

It was all evaporating.

This gave Fish an idea.

He gave Ciro another splash to the eyes, just to distract him, and then latched on to his arm.

Just like Fish could pull moisture out of the air, he could pull it out of living tissue. Every second he held on to Ciro's arm it became more and more a shriveled husk.

There was water in his face-- he could feel the tripping down, though his eyes seemed to evaporate the water that had physically touched his eyes.

But by then, it was too late. He was in Fish’s grasp-- He tried to shake the boy-- surely he’d have the strength to do that-- but his motion was only returned with pain-- and there the boy still stood, clinging to the mus-- no.

No no no.

His arm-- what was once tanned muscle-- was now-- it was--

There was nothing there-- really. Bones, clinging to them, tight, leather-like skin. It was as if the muscles had completely disappeared, the skin now drawn over the skin like a tight, leather glove. He tried to move it once more, staring at it in appalled horror--

It clicked-- the bones twitched helplessly-- and the skin began to crackle like old paint on a rotting wooden beam.

When he finally realized what he had done to Ciro's arm, Fish was both revolted and strangely elated. He had never... he had never realized that he had so much power. He had tried the move in theory, of course, but never on a real person, never in actual combat. But he had stolen the very moisture out of Ciro's body, the water from his cells and plasma from his blood. He had taken it and released it into the air. Ciro was in front of him. Ciro was in the air. Ciro was slowly becoming the air.

It shocked him. It awed him.

"Ci-ci-ci-ciro," he stammered. "Ciro, I-I-I'm s-s-sorry."

But he could not let go. The damage was spreading, past his arm, onto his chest, and Fish could not loosen his grip.

He was terrified.

He was exhilarated.

He was terrified.

He could see the writing on the wall. The tightness in his chest-- the futile attempt at his lung to beat-- how hard breathing had become-- it all spelled out what was going to happen.

Was he really going to have his last breath be at the mercy of someone like THIS? Some weak, insignificant boy? This was probably his first fight, even.

He breath came out sputtered, though no blood could burst from his suffocating heart-- The blood had since begun to turn to sludge in his veins.

Was this really how he was going to go?

No.

The fire, having raged in his blood for so long, would stand restricted no longer. They would be the ones to eat their master, who had caused them so much trouble. In a second, an instant even, the man erupted into a flash of pure light and heat-- unrestrained energy let loose in one instant clap of pain.

There was enough moisture around him that Fish wasn't burned by the explosion. He stood, blinking in the aftermath, staring as the flames died down. It had happened so quickly. So, so very quickly. One moment, Ciro had been there. Ciro had been there, right in front of him.

And then.

And then.

Nothing.

Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust. Fish sank to his knees, eyes fixed on the smoldering pile of ashes and charred bones that had once been Ciro Hammurabbi. His breathing became first ragged, and then choked. "Ciro," he cried. "Ciro!"

It did no good. Ciro was gone. Ciro was gone, and whatever it was that had caused the spontaneous combustion, it was his fault.

"I'm sorry." The words choked him. They were painful. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

Over and over and over. But Ciro was gone.

Ciro was gone, and Fish had killed him.
