Hey, welcome to the Help Desk. The crew and I realized that some people want to roleplay, but don't know what's going on, or how best they can fit in their character.

So, this thread will cover those points, and provide you with the basis of the roleplay.

Star Wars: The Galactic Civil War
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rebelious members of the Alliance to Restore the Republic had have enough. Tired with enduring the atrocities commited by Emperor Palpatines and his ruthless underlings, the leaders of the Rebelion have decided it's time to bring the atrocities back to Palpatine.
Following the sacrifice made by the Rebel Sympathizer-turned Jedi Garen Malek, Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, and Garm Bel Iblis have pooled their resources into an elaborate rebellion aimed at toppling the mighty empire. The centerpiece around their operation revolves around the destruction of the Emperor's latest superweapon, the Death Star. Leading their forces, it is their desire to destroy it and end Palpatine's rule once and for all.
But the loyal forces of the Empire won't stand by and let a rebellion take root, much less carry out it's goal. Led by the Grand Admirals, the Dark Side Elite, and the ever-present, all-powerful Darth Vader, the Empire is setting out to eradicate all opposition, once and for all.
And in between them? A whole galaxy full of sentients, criminals, law-abiding citizens, and more people then can be counted. Will they join the Empire, or defect to the Rebellion? Or join neither side? Only time will tell in what is proving to be the biggest war the galaxy has ever seen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is basically what's going on. The Galactic Civil War is just starting, and it's your job to find a side, whether you're and Imp, a Rebel, or neither.

The Factions
~~~~~~~~~
The Galactic Empire- Also called the New Order, the Empire is the tyrannical, military-driven consolidation that was once the Old Republic. Following an elaborate shadow war (The Clone Wars) and the Great Jedi Purge, Chancellor Palpatine and his disciple Darth Vader had risen as the two prominent leaders in this new Empire.
The Empire is based on a strict military hierarchy, that passes down responsibility from the Emperor on down to the lowliest Imperial Trooper. The Empire is very predugisted, alienating everyone from the government and military who isn't a human or male, with few example.
In practice, the Imperial system is meant to prevent corruption, and this would probably work, if not for the fact that many Govenors, Moffs, Admirals, and Grand Moffs are given their jobs based on prestige, not actual skill. Because of this, it is not uncommon to hear of Imperial commanders being outsmarted by Rebels.
Militarily, the Empire follow a system of uniformity and mass-produced craft: millions of faceless stormtroopers and despencable TIE Fighters, all loaded onto idential Star destroyers.
Within the Empire are various smaller organizations that serve the Empire. While Palpatine and Vader are both Emperor and Executor respectively, as members of the Sith cult, they are also Sith Lords. Included also are the Noghri Death Commandos, Dark Side Elite, and others.
Rebel Alliance- The Rebellion began as a bunch of small, independant movements aimed at protesting Imperial rule. Following the martyrdom of Garen Malek, these movements united under one banner.
The Alliance is a triad ruled by three persons: Mon Mothma of Chandrilla, Bail Organa of Alderaan, and Garm Bel Iblis of Corellia. Mothma is chief diplomat and Minister of State. Organa is the public face and Chief of State, Bel Iblis is Minister of War, in charge of the military.
Though small and ragtag, there is some structure to the Alliance. The Alliance is divided into various Ministries, each providing some basic service or duty. Over these various ministries is the Advisory Council. Each ministry was run by a minister who reported directly to Mothma.
The Alliance Military is comprised of bought or stolen goods from various companies and the Empire. Because they lack vessels larger than frigates, the Alliance relegates most of their forces in hit-and-run attacks focused around groups of fighters and corvettes.
The Jedi- Today, 99.99% of the Jedi are dead and extinct. Remnants of the Jedi Order, the few trained Jedi who are left out there are in hiding, like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. Though a few of these people have joined the Alliance, most of them want simply to disappear and hide. As a faction though, they exist only in name, and nothing more. Thanks to the Imperial taboo on Jedi, being claled or associated with the Jedi is a quick ticket to execution or capture and torture.
The Underworld- A superfaction consisting of the numerous small and large pirate/smuggler/criminal organizations that exist outside Imperial and Rebellion law. These guys are out there purely for a profit, and include bounty hunters like Boba Fett, crime-lords like Jabba the Hutt and Tyber Zann, and criminals like Niles Ferrier.
Bothan Space- Though they technically fall under the jurisdiction of the Empire, the Bothans are effectively neutral in the brewing Galactic Civil War. Their system is a simple one: they gather intel on everyone, which they are notorious at, and then sell that information to the highest bidder. The catch is, the Bothans only offer what they sell to whomever they think would profit from it most. There are some Bothans, however, who do feel allegiances to one faction or another... such as Borsk Fey'lya's support of the Rebel Alliance.
Otherwise the Bothans govern themselves and provide their own security, including a small defense fleet and military.
The Chiss- Not really a player in galactic politics, the chiss are the dominant species in Chiss Space, on the far outskirts of the galaxy. An isolationist group, the only contact they've had with the rest of the galaxy was largely through one man, Mitt'har'nuruodo, a Chiss now serving in the Imperial Military.
Kuat- Another planet that is technically under Imperial control, Kuat is ruled by the Kuat family. Aside from its extensive shipyards, Kuat is largely under Imperial mandate, complete with govenor and a full Imperial sector fleet. However, the planet also operates it's own defense force, which serves the Kuat system itself.
Corellia- Another shipyard like Kuat, Corellia maintains its own security force. Because of the rebellious nature of Corellia, the Empire can't afford to risk losing the system due to a rebellion. Thus, Corellia has no govenor or Imperial presence on planet, even if it is still considered in the Empire/
The Imperial Political System
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Empire follows a three-branch system: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

The Executive Branch, comrpised of the vast majority of Imperials includes the Emperor, his staff, the beuracracy, and the military with its various branches.

The Legislative Branch is comprised of the Imperial Senators and their staff. They create the laws that the Empire follows, though Emperor Palpatine has the last say on all matters.

The Judicial Branch is comprised of the Imperial Courts and their staff. They ensure that the Executive Branch carries out the laws, and that those laws are constitutional in accordance with the Emperor's doctrines.

The Executive Branch
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emperor- The absolute ruler of the galaxy. Though he can be avised by the Imperial Senate and Courts, he is in effect a tyrannical autocrat who does whatever he wants, whether it is for the best or not. The first and current Emperor is Emperor Palpatine.
Executor- The Executive Officer of the Imperial Military. While the Emperor is the Commander in Chief, the Executor is the officer who does all the work. The first and current Executor is Lord Vader.
Shadow Guard General- The leader of the Emperor's Shadow Guards, an elite branch of force-wielding Imperial Guards. This individual doubles as the Emperor's personal bodyguard and enforcer. The current enforcer is a roleplaye-character named Ven Kazdan.
Inner Circle- A group of advisors, self appointed by the Emperor, who manage the day to day duties of the Empire: taxation, legislation, etc. They are led by the Grand Vizier, the current one being Sate Pestage.
Grand Admirals- The ultimate military in the Empire, the Twelve Grand Admirals are the best commanders in the military, hand picked by Palpatine to lead his forces. These Admirals are:
* Martio Batch
* Nial Declann
* Grant
* Josef Grunger
* Ishin-Il-Raz
* Afsheen Makati
* Danetta Pitta
* Peccati Syn
* Miltin Takel
* Osvald Teshik
* Rufaan Tigellinus
* Demetrius Zaarin
Grand Moff- The Grand Moffs serve as the regional governors, appointed by Emperor Palpatine to govern each oversector of space. They answer directly to him.
Moff- Also called Govenor, Moffs directly govern each of the thousand sectors of space, all of which are divided into the twelve oversectors of the Galaxy. The Moffs answered to both the Emperor, as well as the Grand Moff over their Oversector.
Below the moff was the rest of the military, in descending rank. Ranks on the left are Imperial Army, ranks on the right are Imperial Navy.
Surface Marshall / High Admiral
High General / Fleet Admiral
General / Admiral
Lt. General / Vice-Admiral
Major General / Rear Admiral
Brigadier General / Commodore
High Colonel / Line captain
Colonel / Captain
Lt. Colonel / Commander
Major / Lt. Commander
Captain / Lieutenant
Lieutenant / Sublieutenant
2nd Lieutenant / Ensign
Officer Candidate / Midshipman
COMPNOR- A political organization serving as the visible eyes and ears for the Empire, these men are the beurecrats. The COMmisision for the Preservation of the New ORder serves the Empire by promoting fervant support to its authoritive, military structure. Chiefly, they maintain the dominance of human and near-humans in the Empire, while other species are systematically put into slavery.
Imperial Security Bureau- Technically a sub-branch of COMPNOR, ISB functions to serve as the security forces of the Empire, offering intelligence and data against both internal and external threats. Essentially, they are the Empire's own secret service and spy forces. This also includes Interrogation, Re-education, Policy Enforcement, their own branch of Stormtroopers, and Surveillance, otherwise known as Imperial Intelligence. Also included are the Death Commandos, the Empire's elite force of noghri assassins.
Dark Side Elite- The Dark Side Elite are those servants of the Emperor who are force sensitive. Trained to use various applications of the Dark side, the Elite serve as the Emperor's enforcers, wherever they ar needed. Some, called his Hands, serve as personal assassins and servants. Others, known as Shadow Guards, act as the force-sensitive branch of the Imperial Guards. The Inquisitorious was a sect of ISB agents trained also for interrogation and sedition using Dark Jedi techniques.
The Legislative Branch
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Legislative branch consists of the Imperial Senate, itself a remnant of the former Republic Senate. The Senate holds little power, since most of that now resides with the Emperor. What they can do is propose legislation for law, advise the Emperor on the legislation, and maintain the budget.

They are, however, on the verge of obsoletion. More and more, the Emperor diverts power away from the Senate unto himself or his aides. It is only a matter of time before the Senate no longer exists.

Judicial Branch
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Judicial Branch is divided between various courts, from the small tribunals of local villages, to the planetary and regional courts, and finally up to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court consisted of twelve justices, appointed or nominated by the Emperor. Overall, the entire Branch served to maintain the constitutinality of laws, and to make sure the executive branch carried out its work. Over all this was the Procurator of Justice. The current Procurator is Henthrir, a Dark Jedi trained by Darth Vader, who doubled as a Dark Side Elite.
The Imperial Governing System
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Empire was a very decentralized government. Instead of Emperor Palpatine directly controlling each and every planet or system, power was passed on through lesser individuals.

Following is a division of this system:

Galaxy
Oversector
Sector
System
Planet

And now an explanation:

Galaxy- The Empire as a whole. Though it did not cover the entire galaxy, The Empire did maintain, officially, nominal presence over everything except Wild Space. Effective control, however, spread only as far as the Outer Rims, and did not even exist in Wild Space. It was led by the Emperor, and maintained by the Executor, Grand Vizier, Imperial Senate (as a whole), and the Procurator of Justice.

Oversector- The galaxy was divided into twenty oversectors. Politically led by a Grand Moff, the Oversectors also saw rule through the Grand Admirals, which, while they were seldom specifically assigned to defend an Oversector, did serve as the head military figure in individual Oversectors. Imperial Oversector, the region of space containing the Imperial and Azure Sectors, is currently defended by Grand Admiral Osvald Teshik. Other notable Oversectors include Oversector Outer, the Bright Jewel Oversector, and Quelli Oversector.

Sector- A sector of space is defined as an area containing a recommended 50 inhabited star systems or approximately 10,752,091.8 parsecs of space. Given that there were 50,000,000 habitable planets, there were approximately 1,000,000 sectors. This number is tremendously exaggerated, especially in the case of the sparsely populated Outer Rim. In truth, there are a mere 20,000 sectors, since several Outer Rim systems contain far fewer people than the more populated Core planets, most Outer Rim planets contain several hundred habitable systems, since each system usually has only a small city population wise. A sector is governed by a Moff and led militarily by a High Admiral. Each Sector is defended by a Sector Fleet, the largest gathering of naval and army elements.

System- A system is the area of space surrounding a star (in some cases two), and includes the planets and satellites that orbit that star. A system is usually governed by the dominant planet in that system, for which the system is usually named. For instance, Alderaan is the chief planet of the Alderaan System, as well as the Alderaan Sector. Each system is governed by a Governor. The Governor usually served as the leader of the entire system, since most systems rarely had more than one habitable planet. However, where there was another planet of sufficient population and importance, it to would have a Governor. While Systems Forces are the combined might designated to serve over multiple systems, a squadron was the amount of force used to defend each system individually.

Planet- A planet is the single body of space, where there is enough mass and gravity to form a sphere. Most are uninhabitable, but the few that do support life are all governed by a Governor and his local detachment of beuracrats. However, the exception to this rule relies on population: a planet must have enough people to justify a Governor, usually a single or few large cities with at least one million people. Most planets were defended by a single Line of vessels, usually commanded by a Captain of the Line. Since an Imperial Star Destroyer was powerful enough to be considered a line in itself, these were occasionally fielded.

Imperial Sector Fleet Deployments
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In all, there were 2,000 sectors in the Galactic Empire. Each Sector had a 'fleet' to service it in the event of conflict.
These 2,000 sectors were divided into 20 Oversectors. They are:
- Imperial Oversector
- Bimmisari Oversector (Bimmisari, Kashhyk)
- Bright Jewel Oversector (Yavin)
- Byss Oversector
- Quelli Oversector
- Corporate Alliance Oversector
- Corell Oversector (Corellia)
- Kuat Oversector
- Y'Toub Oversector (Hutt Space)
- Wild Oversector (Wild Space)
- Unknown Oversector (Unknown Regions)
- Rishi Oversector 1 (Rishi Maze)
- Oversector Outer (Dac)
- Alderaan Oversector
- Raioballo Oversector
- Freeworlds Oversector (Fondor)
- Pyrshack Oversector (Manaan)
- Greater Javin Oversector (Hoth, Bespin)
- Calaron Oversector (Kessel)
- Lesser Plooriod Cluster (Ithor)
The number of fleets relefated to the defense of each Oversector varies, but is usually based on population. Imperial Oversector, the most populated, has a total 10% of the entire Imperial Navy, while Unknown Sector has a mere Sector Fleet.
Following is a listing of the known fleets in service, as well as their corresponding Oversector, Sector, and/or Assignment:
- Death Squadron (Misnomer; Personal Fleet of Darth Vader)
- Azure Hammer Command (Imperial Oversector)
- Task Force Traitor (Deals with Traitorous Moffs and Admirals)
- Black Sword Command (Defended Core Against Rimward Threats)
- Outer Rim Fleet (Defended Oversector Outer)
- Scourge Squadron (Commanded by Grand Moff Tarkin)
- Vengeance Battlegroup (Commanded by Inquisitor Jerec)
- Kuat Sector Fleet (Defends Kuat Oversector)
- Hutt Defense Fleet (Nominal Fleet in Charge of Hutt Space)
- Maw Defense Fleet (Squadron led by Admiral Daala)
- Shadow Squadron (Roleplay; Led by Ven Kazdan)
- Secret Armada (Multipurpose; Largest Known Fleet)
The Rebel Alliance Political System
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Rebel Alliance was formerly formed in 2 BBY with the signing of the Corellian Treaty. It's founding members were Mon Mothma of Chandrilla, Bail Organa of Alderaan, Garm Bel Iblis of Corellia, and the Jedi Rohm Kota and Galen Marek.

Because of it's diminuitive size, compared to the Empire in any case, the Alliance was not organized into sectors or oversectors. Instead, membership was based on simply the people who joined it. Gradually, it grew to include planets and companies as well.

The ranking of the Alliance is as follows:

- Chief of State
- Advisory Council
- Alliance Cabinet
- Alliance Commands
- Alliance Ministry

~

Chief of State- The Chief of State was the overall leader of the Rebellion. The Chief of State was the final say on all matters, and served as the public head of the Entire Rebellion. The Chief of State was elected every two years, and the position existed only until the Emperor was defeated or gave up his power, at which point the Advisory Council would hold a Constitutional Convention for the establishment of a new government. The current Chief of State is Mon Mothma.

Advisory Council- The Advisory Council consisted of the leaders of the seven most prominent member worlds of the Alliance. In effect, their only power was to approve or disapprove of the Chief of State's decisions. They could also, by a 2/3 vote (in this case, five of the seven seats) for removal of the Chief of State of re-election. This power was never used. Currently, the member worlds of the Council are: Corellia, Alderaan, Chandrilla, Ithor, Sullust, Dac (Mon Calamari), and Bothawui.

Alliance Cabinet- The Alliance Cabinet were the heads of the various ministries that made up the Alliance. Known Ministers include Minister of State Leia Organa, Minister of Finance Viscount Tardi, and Minister of Supply Ral'Rai Muvunc. It was led by the Secretary of the Cabinet. The known Ministries include:

- Ministry of State
- Ministry of War
- Ministry of Supply
- Ministry of Finance
- Ministry of Education
- Ministry of Industry

Alliance Commands- The Alliance Commands were the various groups that made up the Alliance: member worlds, organizations, groups, and even industries. The way each Command worked varied between Commands. The size of a command could vary, from the 20-something members of the Incom Corporation to the entire Churnis Sector.

Alliance Military- The Alliance Military was led by Alliance High Command, which consisted of the Chief of State, Minister of War, and Supreme Commander, the latter two posts currently filled by Garm Bel Iblis. The Military itself was divided into three divisions: Fleet, Starfighter Corps, and Army.

The Alliance Military
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Alliance Military was consisted of only a single fleet, a farcry from the dozens of fleets the Empire was able to deploy.
Instead, the entire Fleet was divided into Lines of Battle. Save for the Battle of Endor (which has yet to occur), no more than a quarter of the Rebel Fleet could be relegated to any one Line of Battle. The composition of Lines of Battle varied, since it was often difficult to consolidate Rebel forces. However, a typical Line of Battle was commanded by a Line Admiral or Senior Captain. The average ship accompanyment included:
3 MC80 Star Cruisers*
6 Strike-class Cruisers
6 Dreadnaught-class Heavy Cruisers
2 Nebulon-class Frigates
2 Lancer-class Frigates
4 Alliance Assault Frigates
8 CR90 Corvettes
1 Escort Cruiser
5 Starfighter Wings (Mixed, includes X-Wings, Y-Wings, R-22 Spearheads, Z-95 Headhunters, etc.)
* Some ships not able to be produced by the Alliance yet
~
The Alliance Military was divided into three departments, each with its own Supreme Commander. They include: Alliance Fleet, Alliance Starfighter Corps, and Alliance Army.
Further, the Military was divided even further:
- Supreme Allied Commanders
- Fleet Command
- Ordinance and Supply
- Starfighter Command
- Support Services
- Intelligence
- Special Forces
- Sector Command
Supreme Allied Commanders: A Tribunal consisting of the Supreme Commanders of the three main branches of the Alliance Military, the Minister of War, and Chief of State. Also called Alliance High Command.
Fleet Command- The absolute command of the Alliance Fleet, it is head by the Fleet Admirals, led by the Supreme Admial of the Fleet.
Ordinance and Supply- Working in tandem with the Minister of Supply, the Department of OaS works to provide supplies and support to the Fleet and Starfighters, allowing the Sector Commands to care for their own forces.
Starfighter Command- Starfighter Command oversaw all fighter activities. It was responsible for recruiting and training new pilots, assigning squadrons to fleets,, and transferring squadrons to needed Sectors.
Support Services- Support Services maintains the various ships and transports used to ferry the Alliance from place to place. It also maintains all hospital ships, medical staff, and 'safe worlds'. These 'safe worlds' are planets that are sufficiently hidden from the Empire.
Intelligence- Alliance Intelligence was responsible for spying on and gathering data from the Empire. Rated as the most dangerous of the branches, even more so than the fleet, Intelligence not only maintained tabs on spies and agents, but also the small fleet of reconnaisance droids, probes, and ships the Rebellion has.
Special Forces- While the vast majority of the army either served directly onboard the Fleet, or under the command of the local Sectors, SpecForces serves as the best combat force in the Alliance, rivaling in training and skill with the Imperial Stormtroopers, despite their relatively small numbers. They are responsible for defending High Command.
Sector Command- Sector Command works to bring the individual armies and forces of each sector together into one unit, and ensures that overall Alliance policy is followed.
~
The current flagship of the Rebel Alliance is the Peregrine, the personal warship of Minister of War Bel Iblis.
The Galaxy Map
~~~~~~~~~~~

Note: Ignore the box marked "Empire." The map itself is dated circa 25 ABY, but is still almost completely accurate compared to the galaxy in 2 BBY

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Sorry for the page stretch, but this is the best map I found available on the web. Putting it into a URL makes it harder to read.

Anyway, this is what the galaxy looks like, and where it's planets are located in respect to each other (more or less).

Even with the hyperdrive, the distance between planets is huge.

How huge?

Look in the red box in the center of the map, and you'll see two planets: Coruscant and Borleias.

See them? Good.

Now, with an average hyperdrive (Class 3), it would take about three days to travel that far. Yeah, that's a long time.

Of course, the amount of time in transit did vary. Faster ships (in this case, Class 2.75 or higher) would make the journey by travelling at a higher speed, and thus less time. Also, a lot depended on traffic, and obstacles in the way.

Here's a good example. Coruscant and Alderaan are located relatively near each other, as you can see on the map. However, there exists an asteroid cluster in he area between these two major planets. Because of the time it takes to navigate through and around the asteroids, a trip here on the Millenium Falcon (which has a Class .5 hyperdrive), takes 16 hours.

Now, look at Alderaan, and then Tatooine on the far south end of the Galaxy. On the Falcon, such a trip only takes 7 hours, more than twice less the amount of time it takes to get to Coruscant.

So, here's a good graph on Hyperdrive Class, and how long it takes to make a trip between Alderaan and Tatooine.

Class 0.5 = 7 Hours
Class 1.0 = 14 hours
Class 2.0 = 28 hours or 1 Day
Class 3.0 = 42 Hours or 1 Day and 18 Hours
Class 4.0 = 56 Hours or 2 Days and 8 Hours
Class 5.0 = 70 Hours or 2 Days and 22 Hours
Class 6.0 = 84 Hours or 3 Days and 12 Hours
Class 7.0 = 98 Hours or 4 Days and 2 Hours
Etc.

I'm sure you get the picture. Be reminded, that most civilian vehicles have about a Class 4 or 5.

So, if you want to go someplace, simply compare the distances of the example described here, to wherever you're trying to go, factor in how fast you're going, and see how long it takes you to go there.

P.S. When travelling in a fleet or group of ships, all of the ships in hyperspace must travel as fast as the slowest ship. Unless you want to leave them behind, of course
