Unknowing that he was being watched, Zul continued his rounds of the front office. Tanned fingers brushed over the fabric of the chairs, the indents of the stitched furniture, wondering just how it would react to his powers. His thumb warmed as he drew it over the stitching, finely tuned so that just one arch of thread burned beneath his touch; a quick hiss, a foul smell and it was gone, not even a trace of smoke.
How dull.
The demonic Frei hummed his satisfaction at his discovery, complacent smile in place as he floated to observe the magazines laid out. He knew how those burned. That was no fun. He hoped Alex would get out of there soon, it was quite boring in the sterile, clean smelling room.
Alex smiled thinly. "You do. The time it takes to capture said soul seems to be different depending on the strength of what you catch." Each of the files seemed to differentiate in the time it took to absorb the soul, something she found most curious but had never had the chance to talk to Kyou about. At the mention of the movies, she rolled her eyes with a bemused smile, "It's not so glamorous, and this is real, Doctor."
She stood from her seat, looking at his back turned to her, padding behind him quietly and looking over his shoulder, retaining some distance between them. "His nature?" she repeated softly. "He's composed of a known demon and a rock that had both lava and glacial ice affixed to it. But his nature..." Vivid green eyes rested upon her charge, expression softening into sweet fondness. "He's curious, mostly about humans, playful. He likes to tease and took a strange attachment to one of the other Raevans - " Alex coughs politely at the memory of that, " - otherwise he's still learning to be gentle, when not to use his powers. He's a child yet."
But not my child. She considered the Raevan to be more like a little brother, less of an ownership and overseeing of his growth and more someone to help him along. To say she was proud of her charge was an understatement. "He liked you. He seems to take to people who have more characteristics like he does. He's very aware of physical presence."

Seeing Alex talk about the Raevan made Kenth somewhat uncomfortable. If this was several years ago the doctor would have dropped his temperature by several degrees by now. The woman's tone was gentle, filled with pride and happy memories that she had with Zul. It was something he had dismissed while she worked with him and still missed when he left. The doctor never understood these contradictory feelings, how much he disliked something and missed it when it was gone. Even now, Kenth still felt a reaction in his mind when he saw her, but Alex was no longer talking about him, but another creature.
"It must have been hard for you." Kenth replied shortly. It was a reply with double meanings, a hint of his current mindset. Then, before the woman could reply back he added:
"He likes you, too."
Another double meaning sentence. In fact, this one could have multiple meanings, perhaps some of which Kenth didn't even realize. The doctor's gaze shifted away from the door and back at Alex, watching and expecting something in return. His face remained calm, but there was something dark in his eyes and a hopeless effort to hide it.
Because knowing her, he would never expect anything expected to be coming out of her replies.

The first words spoken weren't what she was expecting, and yet...it wasn't unexpected, for Kenth to blindside her and catch her off guard. Green eyes blinked in confusion at the pale-haired man, her stomach suddenly tight with anxiety. Was he...talking about what she thought he was? She couldn't tell, and it seemed he intended to keep her guessing, pressing onward with another simple statement that meant a lot more than he was voicing.
She felt younger, like she was still back in those dorms, toiling over a project, the long-haired man at her side...
Alex shook her head, her professional demeanor taking a hard blow at the strange and sudden situation. Maybe she had put herself there with her own mindset, but it was too late to back out now. "I've faced a lot of difficult things," she replied, trying to sound assured of herself, but her voice sounded quiet and almost defeated in her own ears. "Somethings have been harder than others," her eyes flicked back to the man's face, already playing into his game, "but that's life. Isn't it."
The last words were more clipped than she meant to say them, her expression almost darkening for a moment. Damn him for putting her on an emotional rollercoaster within ten minutes of seeing him after so many years! Taking a deep breath through her nose, she held his icy gaze, her own frigid in a different manner. Her words were somewhat clear that she wasn't talking about the Raevan this time. "He does like me. He knows the worth of someone who puts faith in him."
The woman turned away from Kenth then, arms crossed over her chest to keep from lashing out. Every curse word in every language she knew roared through her head, barely kept from the tip of her tongue, taking another deep breath to calm herself. He knew how to get under her skin and damnit if he didn't every time! Not that it mattered. He'd say something...he'd say something cruel or flippant or professional, something to say that she'd lost her cool and he'd won, and she could get out of there and try to resume a life more ordinary than the comfort and chaos that Kenth brought to it!

Kenth was quit certain he sensed anger hidden in the woman's words. To his surprise, the words weren't too much of a surprise. He sighed softly and lowered his head a little, eyes shifting away from Alex's back. To the woman's comment he had nothing to say. He knew what happened between them, that Alex no doubt still remember the conflict the two had in the past. However, he didn't think that he did anything to make Alex this emotional even after so many years. Kenth admitted that even himself still clung to some of the feelings left in the past and to comment about it felt awkward. Yet, he had unconsciously showed emotion toward her, emotion that would never be shown to anyone else.
"I suppose a mutual relationship is much desired between the researcher and the object." Kenth replied in an attempt to balance out the heavy feelings in the room with a rather plain statement. Perhaps to call a truce, the doctor chose to ignore the woman's rather obvious reactions. Alex was here for professional reasons, therefore it would be best to keep the conversation that way, Kenth thought. "It must have been nice, then, to have a rather interesting company. "
The doctor breathed in, realizing a little too late that at the moment Alex could mistaken even his meaningless words for words with much implication. Frowning, the doctor shook his head and decided to offer the woman an escape. Being in the office must have made her extremely uncomfortable.
"Ah, do excuse me, I didn't mean to make you stay. Please feel free to leave whenever. I appreciate the delivery, and will take good care of the subject. "

Green eyes burned beneath slightly lowered dark brows, but she said nothing, merely looking over her shoulder to stare - and glare - at him. Silence lingered between them, and it too was familiar. "He's a living being. I hope you will remember that when yours is born." There was nothing in her voice, no cruelty or annoyance. "It's good to see," she said after a moment, her tone in perfect neutrality, "some things never change." It was her last barb, the last bit of anger to fling at him; Alex could never fight him, he was far too brilliant for her to attempt to out-wit him, but she could still call a spade a spade no matter how much he didn't like it. He was still insufferable and full of more mixed signals than a prom date gone wrong, still the handsome b*****d who was as icy as his eyes.
It was with regret that she realized that some things truly never changed, herself included.
But, there it was - the dismissal. She hated that she knew him well enough to predict his behavior patterns but never his feelings or thoughts. She hated many things about him just as much as she had adored him; to this day, she had never worked with a more immaculate mind and partner. Maybe she held that against him, ruining her standards. With a short, humorless laugh, the Italian shook her head, lowering her arms to pick up the signed papers. "Sure. I know you're busy." Not with people. Never with people, only your work.
Carefully holding the documents in her hand, she moved to the door, pausing to look to him. Her eyes were quiet now, her sense of fight already diminished. "Anything else? You can always call if you think of something later." It wasn't an invitation, but she had a job to do. Even if it made her homicidal against the man.

It was out of habit, but Kenth's word choice was the worst at the time being. He doubt he'd change it anytime soon, which was why the doctor could only daze in a slightly confused, but not at all apologetic expression. Kenth visibly frowned, however, when bitterness of her words hit him. The words were neutral, but it was too neutral at the moment to be considered without intention. She was obviously still angry at him, but Kenth did not understand what for. It was something to do with their past, yet the doctor could not dig down deeper. With the confusion coming together Kenth became frustrated as well, feeling that he did not understand what was going on. For an instant he was ready to ask Alex what was on her mind, and what he did to deserve this kind of treatment. The doctor stepped forward, eyes kept on her, as he reached to open the door. When he was ready to speak, the urge was shoved back by Alex's sudden lack of expression. The woman was ready to get out of this place, not wanting to stay here even for another second, not giving him time to raise an objection.
"...I'm not as busy as you think." Kenth replied after a short pause, his voice suddenly cold to match her quietness. He turned to look at Zul briefly, and walked back to this desk, shifting around so his back was facing the woman. To Alex's question out of manner Kenth did not reply, and only made a nodding notion, before leaning down to his computer. The next time he turned around, the room was empty. Two new items remained on his desk.
New work for him, less time to think.
