I don't understand why everyone seems to enjoy their music so much. I think they sound pretty uninteresting and honestly very mediocre. It seems to me the only thing that is steampunk about them is their clothing. Im really not trying to be a wet blanket, I truely don't understand it at all. Why are they so popular?

Why not?
Music is a matter of taste, one person's noise is another's symphony.
They are 'popular' simply because not everyone shares the same opinion you do; there is a considerable number of people who do like their music - and/or think they're steampunk* - which results in them being popular.
* Arguments concerning their steampunkiness include that their music mixes a lot of new and old, forming something 'anachronistic'. Also, even if their music itself cannot be said to be steampunk, the themes of their music (e.g. 'Airship Pirates') and the actual band is steampunk.

I consider myself highly skeptical when it comes to music that is fairly popular and I'm more often caught cavilling about anything I was told someone who likes [add any of my countless hobbies here] just HAS to also like. Thus I assure you, I prepared myself to go into "wet blanket" mode, too, when I read the first thread telling me I just HAVE to like Abney Park because they are Steampunk.
But, just like the Captain mentioned, music is a matter of taste - and I, too, liked them well enough to immediately order two of their albums and let them take 20 spots of my "100 favourite songs" playlist.
So I dare say I can address your issues in a non-fangirl-ish way, liking their music simply because it happens to be after my fancy:
1) I really don't think they sound uninteresting - on the contrary, I feel they have a very distinctive sound that tends to stray from known patterns quite often. I'm known for my taste for more... "complicated" music, something that throws off other people rather easily, and since I'm still very fond of a lot of their songs, I guess they fit well into the "complicated" category... xp
2) Though I don't really care whether they can be considered Steampunk, to me a lot of their songs (not all of them, but a considerable amount of the songs I know so far) give off those "vibes". And - is it just me or consists half of my contribution to this forum of repeating those words xp - since there's no such thing as a Steampunk genre of music, all that matters is the feelings a song stirs in a listener. As long as someone FEELS it's Steampunk, it simply is. wink
3) I guess they are popular because they address a community that lacks it's own musical genre. So a lot of people just simply check them out, and some just stick with it if they happen to like the music.
Now, that was more of a rant than it was intended to be... whee

I could list quite a few reasons why it is Steampunk music, as best such a thing as that there can be. For a start, take the thematic elements; a great deal (almost all, perhaps) of their recent songs have a Steampunk theme, such as Airship Pirates, The Secret Life of Doctor Calgori and Hidden Track. The bend themselves have adopted a steampunk aesthetic too, of course. The music is of a diverse style, both in geography and time, what with modern electronic instruments played alongside tradition African (I think) drumming, befitting both the Anachronism and Eclectic Explorer archetypes in steampunk. And even the general feel of it is, to many people at least, and certainly myself, in a great way what makes Steampunk great, certainly evoking a grimy yet warm Gaslight feel, akin in my opinion to the Pax Britania books.
And I also agree with the more blunt answers; we fans simply have a different opinion to you. I would be very interested to hear of what you do find to be good music. But take comfort, at least Abney Park is not Twilight.

I checked them out on youtube, and I have to say that I like them. The music is different from what is common today, and I've always enjoy it when a band added a violin in with their music. (witch is very rare)
It's all about style, that bands don't just play that style, from how it look, they live it, and that gives that a more authentic feel.

I like them as well. I admit that the band started out being a goth band, but most of their latest music/themes/etc... is very steampunk indeed. Some exceptional steampunk songs are: "Airship Pirates", "The Secret Life Of Dr. Calgori", and "Herr Drossymyrr's Doll". (check spelling on that last one) Also, at Dragoncon '08, they preformed as a steampunk band and played songs with steampunk themes.

I've never seen or heard anyone use a violin in any sort of modern music.

They have 2 violin players, if 1 isn't enough.

The Decemberists also tend to favor instruments such as the violin, and I personally prefer the Decemberists over Abney Park any day, by far. I do enjoy Abney Park, but in a lot of their songs I find that that special spark is simply not there -- and don't get me wrong, though, I do find that "spark" in many of their songs, just not the majority.

I remember being very disapointed when i heard the "lost horizons" album in full. everything i had heard from it up until then was really good but it seems that when it comes to that album, for every good song there are two bad ones. The final song "Post-apocalypse punk" made me physically cringe.
