 Khala moved as quietly as possible through the underbrush. She was trying to track a herd of deer and take one down for dinner. It was getting kind of late, so she had to hurry. It was already almost sunset. If she took one down too late, she'd have to spend the night out here in the open alone and the notion didn't appeal to her greatly.

 Pinecrest sighed discontentedly. It had been three weeks since he split from Cart's pack. River had gone missing, and instead of looking for her himself, Atum had asked Pinecrest to look for her. Typical Atum, he realized. He was beginning to realize that now. The dragon he had always looked up to was nothing more than a fake, someone who used him as a minion. Funny how Achat had always warned him about it, but it wasn't until Achat was gone that Pinecrest figured that out...
He sighed and turned around a bend in the path to see a clearing in the forest where deer were gathered. He paused and watched them for a minute before picking up the smell of another dragon nearby. A female, he judged. Quietly, he slipped around the deer, trying hard not to let them know he was there.

Finally, Khala was in position downwind of the deer, and hunched, tensing for the pounce that the deer were not expecting. She didn't notice the male approaching her, focused entirely on the deer. Taking a deep breath, she leaped from the underbrush, uncoiling fast to catch the hind leg of a big, old buck. Startled, the rest of the herd fled, but the buck stumbled, his leg pulled out from under him. She moved quickly to make the killing bite and settled down to enjoy her buck. The setting sun shone through the clearing, shining on...wait...was that the pelt of that male dragon she'd sensed before pouncing on her buck? Surprised, she raised her head warily, keeping her sky blue eyes on the male with his handsome brown fur and markings like a forest fire. Swallowing her bite of deer, she said quietly, "I don't think I've seen you around here before."

Pinecrest watched in wonder from his place of concealment. He had been taught how to hunt in a group; Achat and Sfor had taught him well. But here was a female dragon hunting a deer all on her own! She did a good job of it; swift, graceful...it was like poetry. Pinecrest waited until the rest of the deer had fled before stepping out from the clearing. The last thing he wanted to do was create panic and get either of them hurt.
He glanced up at the sun through the clearing, then turned his gaze to the beautiful female dragon. He smiled and shook his head, sitting down a safe ten paces away. "Nope, I'm new around the area," he replied with a shrug. "A member of my pack mentioned this area once and I wanted to see what it was like. My name's Pinecrest; what's yours?" he asked.

"I'm Khala. That explains why I haven't seen you around." She cocked her head. Hadn't her "brother" Cart mentioned forming a pack or something? "Is your pack led by Cart, short for Cartography?" she asked curiously. It was entirely possible Pinecrest came from Cart's pack, and this male would be a good way to catch up on what was going on with her "brother."
