Cart grinned and reached forward to help her sweep the bracken and dirt off of the eggs, gazing at the brown, red, and yellow markings on them. Only when Freckles screamed did he recognize the feeling his spine being ripped out of his chest through his heart. "Ow," he gasped. It was all he could do to lean against Freckles and wrap his tail and arm firmly around her shoulders.

Freckles leaned into Cart, suddenly realizing that he had eaten a full meal but was still weaker than she. Closing her eyes, she pushed as much energy as she could into the hatching spell. Anything to spare Cart.Ephelis didn't want to hatch. Not really. The egg was a tad cramped, true, but still nice and warm. The sudden burst of energy, however, left him little choice, and he started drumming on the shell with his feet and head. Out out out! Craaaaack. The shell split neatly in two and Ephelis tumbled out. Well. That wasn't so bad.

Cart breathed a sigh of relief as he felt Freckles take some of the stress off his exhausted body. He happily leaned against his mate for a second before rushing forward to curl his tail around his children. When all was said and done, it wasn't all that nice a place. Warm, true, and it felt safer than anything she had ever experienced--Ha! Like she'd experienced anything!--but it was cramped. There was no room to move. Surely not everything could be like this! A fizzling energy crackled through her veins and she kicked at the shell--once, twice, three times, her tail finally bursting out as the egg turned, dropping the newly-hatched Topography onto the ground, the egg still caught on her head and shoulders.

"Oh Cart, they're beautiful," Freckles crooned as she curled around her new children. "And they have your stripes," she added with a mischievous grin.
Wailing piteously, Ephelis stumbled out of the remains of his egg shell and bumped into his sister. "Wroooo," he said, and, loosing his balance, fell against his mother's side, where he lay, staring wide eyed at the world around him.
"We'll probably have to stay here a while," Freckles sighed as she nuzzled Ephelis encouragingly, "but after that, let's go home!"

"Yes, they do, and they have your freckles!" Cart chuckled as he reached forward to nuzzle his son. An overwhelming pride and love filled him as he wrapped his tail around his kits and mate. "They're beautiful...strong...Wish I could take credit for that, but..." He returned Freckles's mischievous grin. "Let's get them some food and strengthen then up for the journey home."

Freckles nuzzled her mate one last time. "I'll go catch some fish. You stay here and guard our little ones, I'll be back before you know it." Her heart light within her, Freckles danced out of the cave, already thinking about all of the Sfor, Malachite, Achat... ah, it would be good to see them once more!

Cart nuzzled her back and cuddled the hatchlings closer. "I'll be here then, my love," he murmured. He felt contentment settle in his heart as his mind swirled with the old--Sforkok, Malachite, Achat, Pax--and the new..."My loves..."
