To be honest I don't see a problem with mixing styles as long as it follows the rules. For example; a Wa Lolita with a Sweet Lolita fabric.

What is everyone else's thoughts on this ?

That's not particularly mixing anything.

Well for a more elaborate one, My friend wants to make a Hip-Hop Lolita, and I have no idea how to react to it.

I mix urban/hip-hop style with lolita, I try to make outfits before I go out to buy whatever I need.
I think your friend can do it, but it takes a lot of work to make it look good, and not looking like a hot mess.

But honestly, if she doesn't have much of a clue about the lolita style or are one of those who has a problem with spending money, I would say for her not to waste her time.

Just for clarification Lil' Mama in AP =/=Lolita, let alone a "hip-hop styled lolita". Unless lol you look at her outfit from that Noggin show because I must admit that outfit was pretty nice (sans the bedazzled blazer).

Mixing styles can be done if, like all things, there is an appropriate balance. Creating a mix of styles can be as simple as changing fabric of your dress and the accessories that go with it, or as complex as incorporating whole pieces into the outfit.

The best way to approach it I think is to treat it as a theme for one style or the other, rather than a true blending. One of the styles has to be dominant, or it's going to end up being very confusing. In this case, since it's a lolita guild and lolita is a bit more out there, I'd say make lolita the dominant style of the two in the mixture. Make sure that the silhouette of the skirt is retained, and that certain accessories or elements such as a hairbow and knee-high socks is maintained.

I'm not very familiar with hip-hop/urban wear styles, so I can't offer much more advice than that, I'm afraid.

i spend a lot of time playing around with things like this... I'm not familiar with the hip-hop fashion, so i won't make any assumptions there but.... You have to look at what the most important things from both fashions are, and make decisions about which is more important to which one.

For example, the silhouettes are going to be different. Lolita has a very distinct silhouette, and it's hard to make something that looks lolita without that silhouette. So while you use the lolita silhouette, you may want to use something prominent from the other.

I think my favorite thing to do this with... Renaissance faire loli. It sounds silly, i know. But think about it.

At Ren Faire, you have long skirts, a bodice, bells, hair wreaths, etc.

A lolita can't be without her knee-length (or there-abouts) skirts and petticoats. So leave those in. i can't imagine Ren Faire garb without a bodice, so you incorperate those. You look at the color palettes, and decide if theres any overlap. I decided to go mostly blue and cream for the ren faire loli i sketched out for fashion sketching (yeah, fashion design major...), as i've seen these in both styles. for hair, i went with a lolita head band with ribbon roses and a minimum of lace, and some braiding. A pair of boots that looked more ren-faire-ish, but with small bows on the sides, a pair of white tights, bells around the waist, and a small basket with flowers, spinning and things kept in a purse finished it off. The overall look made one person say 'lolita-esq' and another say 'Renaissance-esq".

As long as you take the time to think it through, i think it can be amazing. It won't get accepted into either style right off the bat, but i think it can be awesome.

Well with Urban clothing, the trends change up fast from time to time, but only recently did they jump on the "80's" bandwagon. Now a LOT of things sold in stores are very bright, clashing colors. There are also still some things with gold or silver foil-prints and stuff... but for the most part bright colors are back into style for youth.

I mix lolita into my everyday clothing - I don't want to dress fully up in loli everday as it takes too much time and I'm too tired for that xD
So I like to wear cute, frilly shirts with a pair of jeans, a loli-skirt with a band shirt and sneakers, 'short' skirt and t-shirt with loli-accessories; you get the idea :3

And then I like to mix a lot of things into loli too; like wearing a cute sweet-loli dress with punk accessories and such. Some weekends ago I dressed up with a friend in some kind of hip-hop-loli!
I think it's a lot of fun to just try and mix a lot of things heart
