Makoto Shinkai: my new god.
He's the creator of such titles such as... The Place Promised in our Early Days, 5 centimeters per second, and Voices of a Distant Star, and is said to be the next Miyazaki!

*Sorry if I'm bumping up an old thread*
But I've heard of those movies, are they good? I've been thinking of watching them, but I'm not too sure... ^_^;; Since I don't really want to watch them if they're not good... I've been hearing mostly good things though..

His stuff is AMAZING! I had never heard of him until this year. His art is wonderful, use of colors and script are awesome. It's unfortunate that his movies are hard to find. I owe Nena a copy for Christmas the second we find one. I would suggest renting one of his movies, or reading one of his manga's. The cool part is that he started animating on his own and then got big! 3nodding If you have netflix you can rent his movies. Enjoy~!

Oh, please don't worry about ever doing that. This is a community where you can express your interests no matter what. smile

And I really really really liked 5CM/S movie. I've read and seen Voices of a Distant star, but I preffered the 5CM/S movie to the Voices of a Distant star one. I preffered the manga of Voices to the actual anime... But, I watched it a long time ago so I really want to see Voices of a Distant Star again. I haven't seen The Place Promised in our Early days... So, right now, my priority list is something like.... I want to buy 5 centimeters per second, and then the two DVD boxset of the other one. The imagry is simply gorgeous, and I love how he really has a simplistic way of showing emotions.

They have a different way of showing emotion in the Japanese culture, and I used to think that in a way it was rather cold. But after seeing this movie I realize that there are ways to express oneself even beyond all of the plain and simple formalities. I jsut really liked it. ^^ I definately recommend it. I know netflix has Voices of a Distant Star as well as 5 Centimeters per second. If you subscribe to it, then I recommend them both. I can't speak much for the Place Promised in our Early Days, but Netflix also has that if you wanted to check it out. After I get Voices of a Distant Star, I plan on doing that.

Funny thing is, I just got my dad to get a netflix account last night. 5cm per second is at the top of my list right now.. I can't wait for it to come now.. >.> Only problem is they're not sending until Monday..
Thanks. 3nodding There's nothing a parent would say is "inappropriate" though right? Just in case they happen to walk in when it's on? xD

Definitely not inappropriate from what I can remember. If you want to go by US ratings, I'll say it's rated like... PG. I'm not going to spoil anything, so I won't tell you what happens, but it's really sweet. The film is broken up into three parts of the main character's life. Kind of like that form of art where they show a piece that is actually the sum of three pieces put together. I forget what that form of art is called, but you won't regret it. There is this soft sense of nostalgia in it too. It's all just very nice. ^^

Once you see some of his other things too, you realize that he actually makes a lot of allusions to other movies. Kind of like.... in one shot near a rail road crossing you see a space ship go into outer space and you see a truck with the acronym NAFDA on it--which is an acronym for their space station. Voices of a Distant Star is all about outer space. smile
