"I'm surprised you've grown as well as you have," Arbre said softly. With a soft sigh, he settled down in a soft part of the cave and waited for Abalis to eat his fill. He hadn't eaten in to long, and he'd easily be able to finish the rest. No sign of Harar though, where had he gotten to? No matter. He was probably watching from afar, waiting for the right moment. No doubt he was worried he'd terrify the skittish hatchling. Or he was telling everyone and anyone that there was a new pack member. Arbre rather hoped it was the former, he had to tell Harar to find Abalis' parents. There was a pack nearby, Tarragon or some such, that Harar was familiar with and might have some news.

Abalis chewed thoroughly, savoring every morsel of his first deer...

"This is SO good," he murmured happily. He grinned. "Do you and the rest of the pack eat this way all the time? Because I definitely wouldn't mind eating this and only this for the rest of my life..."

I wonder if Mom and Dad have deer meat wherever they are... Abalis thought to himself.

Arbre smiled at the young one's question. "Not always, no. We hunt what we can, and dear are not always plentiful. Or sometimes they are too swift. We also hunt mountain sheep and goats, but they can climb swiftly over dangerous ledges and have hard horns that they use to defend themselves. We hunt them rarely, and only in groups. Usually of foolhardy youngsters who feel they have something to prove, or elders in times of famine. There are also numerous fish in the lake, but we only hunt them under a keystone's guidance, and only in time of need or during a sacred right."

"I want to try goat meat sometime," Abalis decided, licking his chops at the thought. He frowned thoughtfully. "Why do you need a keystone to catch fish? And why don't you just catch them whenever? It seems like they'd be easier to catch than goats or deer... and if there are plenty of them..."

"The lake is sacred to the Keystones," Arbre said firmly. "All other groups have sacred springs, but the Keystones have the lake. It is their duty to look after us as the lake does when we were thirsty and there is no water to be found. The fish that swim in the lake are sacred as well, and would not be so plentiful were we to hunt them. And fishing is not as easy as it sounds, especially in something the size of the lake. Or safe. There are some large fish in there, fish with teeth. Don't stray near the lake, Abalis, except during the sacred ceremonies or when there is another with you, one from the pack. Or if you become Keystone," he amended, "but always remember that the lake is sacred, as are the springs."

Abalis gulped. Fish... with TEETH?!
"I'll remember," Abalis promised profusely, "I'll stay away from the lake - accept during ceremonies or when someone's with me, or if I become Keystone. I PROMISE."

He grinned happily. Hmm.... Monster fish or no monster fish... Abalis still wanted to see the lake...
"Will you take me to see the lake sometime, though?" he asked eagerly.

Arbre hesitated. The lake was truly sacred, and brought back painful memories of Nari. "I can not promise that, Abalis," he said sadly, "unless I show you from a distance. If you stay long enough, however, or return as a student, you will indeed see the lake regardless of who shows you. It is our main source of drinking water, yet another reason to keep it pure. It would be most proper for a keystone to show you during your first time, but we have none..."

He smiled suddenly. "No, I believe you will see it. It will take a few days to find your parents and bring them back... stay here. I'm going to go find Harar." And with that, he got shakily to his feet and slunk off. He was hungry, and the dead deer was tormenting him, and it was urgent that the hunt for Abalis' parents started sooner rather than later.

"Okay..." Abalis nodded, just a bit disappointed.

A pang of emotion flooded through him as Arbre mentioned 'finding his parents' and 'bringing them back'. Did Arbre really believe that it was possible? That Abalis's parents were still alive? Abalis himself wasn't so sure about it anymore...

"Alright... I'll wait here," Abalis nodded, laying down and putting his head down on his paws. He was grateful for the time alone. He needed to... To figure some things out...
