Well, while Aang did end up letting her go in the season two finale, the lightning bolt Azula hit him with blocked the seventh chakra again. This prevented him from entering the Avatar State again, and I'm assuming means he got to keep his attachment. As far as the series finale goes... Well, he didn't make any conscious effort to enter the Avatar State - he got hit in the back with a rock that somehow magically let him control it. :/
Also, no one's entirely sure what 'letting go of your attachment' means. Personally, I think it means he has to learn to put his duty to the world before anyone else (in this case, Katara), since he has a tendency to think more about Katara and her safety/his desire to be with her, instead of focusing on what he needs to do as the Avatar.
I dunno though. I don't think I'm making sense. xP

To me, it made perfect, coherent sense until about episode 317(EIP).
What I thought happened: Aang begins to let go of Katara and embraces the vast powers of the Avatar as he is supposed to. He is shot down, nearly dies in the AS, but is healed by none other than Katara. He either never really gave her up, or just launches himself back into his obsession with her which consumes him throughout season 3. in NaD, it's CLEARLY given that Aang must again give Katara up, or his obsession with her will keep him from doing what;s right and will ultimately destroy the world. When EIP rolls around, Aang's actually confronted with the concept of NOT being with Katara, and the play that is "the Truth" according to lie-detector Toph portrays Katara as having a love for Aang that resembles a love a sister has for her brother.
What actually, apparently happened: Aang runs and hides the whole fight with Ozai, eventually being CORNERED in a rock. When Ozai finally breaks said rock, Aang is not letting go of Katara, he is jabbed in the Easy Button back and apparently a knot of energy is released, thereby throwing him into a complete control of the Avatar State that shouldn't even exist because he never completely let Katara go. Aslo, Aang is given the wonderous, unforeshadowed Mary-Sue super power of spirit bending.
So, yeah. It totally makes sense. rolleyes
